For those of you not from Canada, understand that many of our provinces have conservative governments who are hostile to LGBTQ people. This would be one of them, and earlier in the year they just suddenly went after schools teaching sex ed. It’s like the current topic de jure down south bubbled up here, and our conservatives realized they had basically unchecked power to implement the book bans, and sex ed bans that our souther neighbour’s were talking about. It happened very swiftly, and the conservatives used one of the constitutional escape valves that is supposed to be there for extreme circumstances, the notwithstanding clause. This allowed them to essentially tell the courts and the charter "yea, we know it’s a human rights violation, but oh well, we don’t care and you can’t do anything about it. "
So here we are, this kind of thing is the impact of giving conservatives power, and since their political philosophy is built around maintaining and restoring traditional power hierarchies even something as “long settled” as sex-ed isn’t safe.
