quicksand , in Trump’s bond in Georgia election interference case set at $200,000

Bond needs to be set based on monetary worth. Also I’d think that crimes of this magnitude would necessitate a much larger bail

GoosLife ,

Bond needs to be a thing of the past. If you’ve already determined he should be in custody for the time being, paying money doesn’t make it less so. The fact that it’s pocket money for him is just even more absurd.

Saprophyte ,
@Saprophyte@lemmy.world avatar

Bonds are to restrict the poors. It’s serving it’s intended purpose in this case. Allowing the rich to walk while keeping the not rich in their place.

galloog1 ,

It’s to prevent people from running away instead of going to trial. If you have nothing, no small amount of money will keep you from running. The assumption is that you are getting someone else to post it for you. They are then the ones that keep you in line so they get their money back.

Absolutely none of this applies to this case though. $200,000 is not going to keep President Trump from skipping off to Russia.

Unlike bail, you don’t actually pay a bond unless you violate its terms.

Miqo ,

Thank you, I mixed them up as well!

ewe ,
@ewe@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. This is a huge burden on the poorest in our society and basically means the poorest will never be able to afford bond and the richest will always be able to afford bond. At both ends of the spectrum, bond is basically meaningless. If someone is sufficiently rich, if they want to run, they will, regardless of if $200k is forfeit. If someone is sufficiently poor, they’ll never be able to afford to be out of jail, even if they have no intention on running. I’m not saying that Trump is, in fact, a flight risk, but bond is stupid and if someone should be in jail, then they should be in jail or if they should not be in jail, then they should not be in jail. I know it’s an imperfect system living in an imperfect world, but can someone please come up with some sort of technology mechanism so that the current bond system is rendered obsolete, please?

I feel like the answer is making jail/prison less of a fucking tortuous experience (ala the Scandinavian model), but some people seem to think that jail/prison being the worst possible place to be is a feature, not a bug. If jail were less torturous, then it would be conceivable for rich people who deserve jail to have to go there while awaiting trial and the bond system could be done away with…but that would mean making it nicer for everyone, so probably won’t happen.

Given his means, the terms should have included surrendering his passport and an ankle bracelet.

SuiXi3D , in American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

My wife and I together make about $85k a year. We struggle, no doubt. Not as much as we could, but to say we’ll be able to retire in 35 years is a joke. We’ve never been able to save. Not because we don’t want to or haven’t tried, but shit is just so god damned expensive.

negativenull ,

Must be all that avocado toast

athos77 , (edited ) in American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job

No mention of corporate greed, I note. Most people aren't looking to get wealthy, they just want someplace to live not horribly far from work, a reliable way to get to work, to eat moderately decent food, pay our bills, and have a little fun. Corporations are raising prices on all of those, then they complain when we just want to stop treading water.

SuiXi3D ,
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

You nailed it. Most folks just wanna get by without worrying about if they’ll still have a roof over their head in a month. Little things to make life just a bit easier. A shorter commute. A car that doesn’t guzzle gas getting to work. Some time off to rest and relax so they can come back stronger.

But no. We’re worked ‘til we die.

SCB ,

Remote work addresses like, every single one of those things. Strongly recommend it.

SuiXi3D ,
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

It’s not for me. It’s not for everyone. I’ve tried.

rthmchgs ,

Remote work just isn’t feasible for some jobs. Hard to be a carpenter and work remotely.

ArbitraryValue , in Ukrainian drone destroys Russian supersonic bomber

The interesting thing here is that this bomber was not destroyed near Ukraine, but rather at a base most of the way to St. Petersburg. I would have guessed that that would be some of the best-defended airspace in Russia. A drone getting through to there implies some interesting things about the distribution of Russian air defense systems.

They don’t have any? It’s all been sold off to oligarchs who took the money and run?

BB69 ,

Most of the air defense has been sent to Moscow. Even then, they struggle with drones.

Longpork_afficianado ,

To me it suggests that Ukrainian aligned fighters are operating inside of Russia.

I don’t doubt the level of air defense Russia have in place near the border, but partisans in-country would sidestep them entirely.

JohnDClay ,

Their air defense is spread incredibly thin between Moscow, all the bridges, the supply depos, and all the air force bases. They don’t have enough, so they’ll keep losing massive amounts of material.

GhostOfElectricity , in Charles Martinet, Longtime Voice Actor for Mario and Luigi, Retires

I wonder if Nintendo is considering training an AI voice model based on Martinet’s recordings or something. Are they advanced enough yet to do convincing wahoos? I can’t imagine another voice for Mario.

pimento64 ,

You say this like it hasn’t already happened.

GhostOfElectricity ,

Has it? I guess I shouldn’t have phrased it as though they’re just now considering their options. They’ve obviously planned for this.

Chozo ,

Are they advanced enough yet to do convincing wahoos?

Doubtful. Nintendo isn't even advanced enough to host a single gameplay server for any of their top multiplayer games. Charging money for access to a P2P-networked game mode is not only an insult to the players, but honestly ought to be illegal, but that's another rant for another day.

I love Nintendo, but they really seem to be afraid of technology.

GhostOfElectricity ,

I was talking about voice models, not Nintendo. Nintendo could make use of AI if they wanted to. And saying they aren’t advanced enough is plain wrong. Whoever makes those decisions just isn’t willing to spend their resources on proper online infrastructure.

Thoth19 ,

Normally you’d be right. But Nintendo is just kinda bad at a lot of technology. Pokemon cheating, preventing hacks on their HW, bug bounty program, etc. To say nothing of their issues with older games being emulated etc.

From their track record id expect them to outsource to a vendor for the voice model. Then there is some minor problem that gets fans mad. The vendor fixes the problem but Nintendo decides that all attempts in the space are doomed and doesn’t touch ai voice for years and uses a stupidly over complicated solution in the interim.

    foggy , in As gas prices hit 10-month highs, Citi warns major hurricanes could ‘massively’ disrupt supplies

    Yeah ok.

    Read as “whether or not hurricanes disrupt supplies, were going to use this fear as justification for raising prices anyways. We will post yet another year of record profits”

    YewmanBean ,

    For real. Such a cop out. Companies acting like they’ve never had disruptions before so they never prepare for failure. It just their excuse to get “help” from tax payers.

    There’s no way I’d change jobs for less than 6 figures.

    bobs_monkey ,

    I’m currently sitting on a soft offer to take on a manager role at my old job. The offer was $92k, I’m pushing for 100k. If not, I’ll keep my happy ass as an independent contractor. The only reason I’m willing to take the pay cut is for a work-life balance, and benefits.

    JasSmith , in American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job

    It’s so great to see workers able to demand their worth. This has arguably been the strongest job market in 40 years. Given the population pyramid in most countries, I don’t see this resolving without a concerted effort to drive even higher immigration. Or a recession.
