theodewere , in Chicago taxpayers have paid nearly $700 million since 2000 in lawsuits by people who say police framed them
@theodewere@kbin.social avatar

that's a lot of money to spend on shitty policing

JunkMilesDavis , in Wall Street CEO tells Penn president: Resign or I'll pull $100 million
@JunkMilesDavis@kbin.social avatar

While I'm fully uncomfortable with the influence donors have over these institutions, I also feel like the handling of some of those hearing questions was catastrophic. Lady got maneuvered into giving them exactly the weak non-answer they were fishing for. It's bad all around.

linuxdweeb , in Biden administration asserts power to seize drug patents in move to slash high prices

“When drug companies won’t sell taxpayer-funded drugs at reasonable prices, we will be prepared to allow other companies to provide those drugs for less,”

Cue the legal bickering over what counts as “reasonable”. I think the definition is clear: the only reasonable price for medicine is the lowest possible price. And the only way to ensure that is to not award drug patents in the first place (at all, but especially if development was funded by taxpayers).

Everythingispenguins , in Nepal: Twelve arrested for smuggling Nepalis into Russian army

That article was very unclear. Are they knowing joining the Russian military or do they think they are getting a different job and being impressed into service?

samus12345 , in Bill Gates thinks of himself as 'very nice' compared to Elon Musk and Steve Jobs
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

Steve Jobs gave us Pixar, though.

nxdefiant ,

He was, by all accounts, an unmitigable disaster of a human. An asshole to swallow the sun, if you will.

samus12345 ,
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

Not denying that.

hddsx , in UNLV gunman was unemployed professor who had 150 rounds of ammunition and a target list, police say

As much as I like AR15s, I think this shooting really highlights the difference between mass shootings with rifles and pistols.

JustZ ,
@JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly, it’s a factor of stopping power over time. Media needs to start showing the bodies.

FlavoredButtHair , in Woman who threw hot burrito bowl at Chipotle worker sentenced to fast food job
@FlavoredButtHair@lemmy.world avatar

Does she have access to steal money? What if she works hard and gets promoted?

TheOneCurly ,
@TheOneCurly@lemmy.theonecurly.page avatar

What if she works hard and gets promoted?

The justice system will have actually succeeded in rehabilitating someone.

girlfreddy OP ,

The likelyhood that woman will find anyone to hire her is slim as the first thing many employers do is google your name.

And if you’d worked in the industry at all you’d know people rarely get hired to handle cash as an entry position. She’d probably be in the back doing prep/clean-up.

arymandias , in Millions of People Used Tainted Breathing Machines. The FDA Failed to Use Its Power to Protect Them.

If it ain’t Dutch it ain’t much!

Edit: Oops wrong article…

doublejay1999 , in Bill Gates thinks of himself as 'very nice' compared to Elon Musk and Steve Jobs
@doublejay1999@lemmy.world avatar

I think this is relatively a new line. I don’t remember him being talked about as a hard ass boss back then.

The media spun him as a techno whizz kid .

FReddit , in House Speaker Mike Johnson says God will punish “depraved” U.S. because more teens identify as LGBTQ+

Asshole.

Rapidcreek , in Israel-Gaza latest news: No room in shelters as thousands flee to Gaza border city - BBC News

According to Twitter, there has been a large number of Hamas surrendering.

snazzles , in Trump: I won't be a dictator if I become U.S. president again

Dictator for a day

tsonfeir , in Putin trolls COP28 with oil talks next door
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Was there an oil fountain?

MattMillz ,

I thought it was from the onion but I could only find this and i think it’s satire. thehardtimes.net/…/climate-conference-attendees-d…

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

This is a satire site like the onion. You are correct. They have some good stuff.

agent_flounder , in US Marshal in custody after accused of sexually abusing woman during flight to London

ACAB

Serinus , in US Marshal in custody after accused of sexually abusing woman during flight to London

Wait. The woman was just a random passenger, not their suspect who they hadn’t picked up yet.

girlfreddy ,

Wouldn’t matter either way. Cops shouldn’t be sexually abusing prisoners.

Serinus ,

It matters because it removes motive and increases credibility.
