I’m assuming the phone and tablet were dead and that’s why she couldn’t use them to call for help? Also if her husband was doing this to kill her wouldn’t he have taken them away from her? I have so many questions here.

QuarterSwede , in Trump Cancels a Debate With Harris on ABC News and Pitches One With Fox News Instead
@QuarterSwede@lemmy.world avatar

It’s definitely a risk for Harris but it’s the only place anyone watching only Fox will see her debate Trump. Not that it’ll change their minds of course, they’re so heavily brainwashed it’s insane.

Ragnarok314159 ,

Why it should never happen. Trump could go there, shit his pants, and call Harris all the words, and all republicans will lap it up like the mewling little weird cowards they are.

Buttigieg has been appearing on Fox News recently and he’s been doing a good job dismissing their dishonest narratives and avoiding their traps.

youtu.be/SXGpXWbVYSg?si=xBtDe8jWbMdXvmUF

But this isn’t Buttigieg, and this isn’t a one-on-one interview, so we can only hope if she agrees to this for some reason that she’s as prepared as he is.

SaltySalamander ,

People who watch Fox make up a pretty significant portion of every debate's viewership. They don't care what channel it's on, they're going to watch.

MyOpinion , in Assassination again shows Netanyahu’s disregard for US-Israel relations

It is nuts that Israel thinks this is a good way to act. One of these days the USA will turn a blind eye and countries will do to them what they are doing to others. Killing people in other countries will lead to terrible things.

nonailsleft ,

Didn’t the US just go and straight up assassinate Bin Laden, Al Zawahiri, Al Baghdadi, …?

MyOpinion ,

Yes the USA has done similar things.

homura1650 ,

The main complaint isn’t so much that Israel is killing enemy leaders; but that it is doing it in a strategically self destructive way.

Bin Laden was a risky move, but the strike was conducted in Pakistan, who was friendly to us; and there are allegations that the Pakistani government gave more of a green light to the operation than they were willing to admit.

Al Zawahiri was in Afghanistan about a year after we left. The Taliban at the time was still occupied in condolidating their power domestically; and their big victory was getting the US to withdraw. They lacked the will and means to start a major war with the US.

Al Bagdhadi was done as part of the Syrian civil war, in direct coordination with the SDF. At the time the operation was planned, the US military was directly involved on the ground in Syria, although our sudden withdrawal prior complicated that.

Israel is dealing with a country that is antagonistic to Isreal, and which has spent decades building up its military capabilities in anticipation of an eventual hot war with Israel. Iran has demonstrated that it has serious political will in avoiding a hot war, however it is just 1 miscalculation away from stumbling into one anyway; and every direct attack Israel makes causes Iran to roll the dice again. Or, at some point Iranian leadership might decide that all Israel’s direct attacks mean they are in a hot war already, an that Iran should respond with full force.

In the case of this particular assassination, I struggle to see what tactical or strategic upside Israel gets to justify the risk. Israel is nominally trying to negotiate with Hamas; but they just killed a senior Hamas member who was involved in those negotiations. Worse, they killed a member who was, within the context of Hamas, a pro peace moderate. Him leaving for completely benign reasons would have been bad for Israel, because his replacement woukd likely be more antagonistic then him. This is 100x worse when he leaves due to a direct and deliberate attack by Israel.

The only way Israel’s actions make sense is if the leadership that has been spending years trying to start a war with Iran is trying to start a war with Iran; and if the leadership that has been spending months sabatoging any potential deal in Gaza wants to sabatoge the potential for a deal in Gaza.

nonailsleft ,

The only difference between those assassinations might have been Pakistan, but even then it was a public secret that he was being protected by the ISI and so the US didn’t risk informing their ‘ally’ of what they were about to do.

And in either of those cases, the US/Israel will have made a positive evaluation of the fallout. I’ve heard predictions that “Iran will instruct their proxy militias to strike at Israel”. Yeah ok, what have they been doing for the last 10 months? And what caused Israel pressing the button this week? Or “They’ll send a larger missile strike”. Yeah ok they did that in April and unless they go full send Israel is probably going to be able to largely fend it off.

And with option nr2, some sane people might see that it’s Iran that’s choosing to escalate. I think it’s unlikely that they want to, though. They are content just being in power and killing some sluts who dare show their hair in public, and mailing missiles to some schmucks to fight some religious wars elsewhere.

Israel just hit 2 foreigners as retaliation for Iranian-backed missile strikes on children. Earlier this year IS killed 80 Iranian civilians because they believed they were doing the worshipping thing a little bit wrong. Would they really start a war, which could end their reign, over this?

Lastly, why would Israel care who sits at the other end of the table? Haniya might have been somewhat rational, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t praying for more jewish casualties five times a day. At any rate, it helps them when the other side is more openly genocidal. Israel has no real reason to stop this war before they’ve broken Hamas, so why would they ever want a deal that prevents this?

MataVatnik , in Assassination again shows Netanyahu’s disregard for US-Israel relations
@MataVatnik@lemmy.world avatar

US is not an ally for Israel, we are just there to be milked, used, and abused. Yet we keep sending them money.

FenrirIII ,
@FenrirIII@lemmy.world avatar

The US is using Israel as a lightning rod for Muslim fundamentalists. They’re friendlier to the West than Saudi Arabia and Iran, so it helps keep the region stable in a way that lets western nations keep out of it (for now). The problem is that Bibi is a criminal whose only means of staying out of prison is endless war.

The US government also uses Israel to funnel tax money to American defense contractors by giving Israel millions in foreign aid which they use to buy American weapons. The politicians get paid by the military industrial complex while it employs Americans at low wages.

There’s also the Christian nutjobs that believe Israel is part of the end times when their magic carpenter comes back and takes a dump on non-Christians.

This doesn’t read as a literal quote to me. I’m feeling 50/50 that was what he was thinking and said something more appropriate vs actually saying that. He was on a podcast, presumably in a storytelling/jokey frame of mind.

Bristlecone ,

Yeah, I absolutely hate this guy but that does kind of sound like what he was saying. Articles like this that make conservatives think that liberals freak out about every joke. I’m as far left as it gets but even I can see this should not have been an article, basically. Still a giant piece of shit person regardless.

worldwidewave , in Prisoner Deals Stoke Fears of Perverse ‘Incentive’ to Grab Americans

Some national security experts even muse about whether the U.S. government should declare that it will not bargain for the release of anyone who disregards warnings against visiting Russia, Iran, North Korea and other high-risk countries.

At this point, I’m in favor of this. If you’re visiting Russia or North Korea (or Iran or Belarus) in the year 2024, it shouldn’t be the responsibility of the US state department to rescue you.

It’s not like Italy or South Africa or Brazil or New Zealand (or even the more autocratic European countries Hungary and Türkiye) are going to snatch up Americans as bargaining chips. It’s just a very short list of totalitarian states that you’d have to be an idiot to visit anyways.

mozz , (edited )
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

I won’t say I 100% disagree, but it is a hard thing. It’s like the Coast Guard rescuing someone when they ignored every warning and put themselves in danger - it’s like yeah they definitely shouldn’t do that but also if you have the capacity to rescue them, and if you don’t they will literally die on your watch while you sit at home. I get the idea of saying fuck it and going and bailing them out, even if it is costly to do it.

It’s good for US journalists to go into authoritarian countries and report, just like they do for war zones and other dangerous places. It’s bad for US Marines to hear all this stuff about putting their life on the line for their country when they know they are Marines just sitting in Russian prison and the US isn’t doing a thing to try to get them out (whatever stupidity it was that wound up getting them put there).

I think it’s also kind of national pride - like it makes us look like chumps if there are Americans sitting in prison that shouldn’t be there and we’re just not doing anything about it.

Like I say I won’t say I 100% disagree with you but there are other factors involved than just whether or not the person put themselves at risk on their own.

Grabthar , in J.D. Vance Told His Son to ‘Shut The Hell Up’ About Pokemon While Talking to Trump
