Beastlygr , in Teen brother of Air Force airman who was killed by Florida deputy is shot to death near Atlanta

Guns and cops destroying another family.

AbidanYre , (edited )

The same family again, really.

Beastlygr ,

I would be so broken and angry if I had to go through that terrible experience twice.

ripcord ,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

Oh but the cops only destroyed the family one time. It was someone else the ssecond time!

AbidanYre ,

Shit. You’re right. I thought this one was also the police.

hddsx , in Reddit CEO says Microsoft needs to pay to search the site

Hmmmm. Reddit needs to pay money to peer. Reddit needs to pay end user ISPs to transfer data to the end user.

FlyingSquid , in Almost quarter of big fashion brands have no decarbonisation plan, report finds
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s really not just the big brands, it’s the entire industry. Fast fashion isn’t restricted to high-end brands. It’s in every badly-made Walmart T-shirt you can wear for maybe a year before it falls apart. It’s all a mess. And making your own clothes doesn’t even help much because good luck getting well-made fabric you can afford. Plus, you’re probably not going to be able to make your own shoes even if you’re good with a sewing machine.

porkchop ,

Cheap, well-made fabric is available at thrift stores in the form of linens. Curtains, tablecloths, and sheets are a great source of high-quality fabrics for cheap!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And we should definitely be buying more from thrift stores, but it still doesn’t solve problems for things like shoes. Eventually, they wear out. Thrift store ones fairly quickly much of the time. At least when we’re talking about practical shoes rather than fashionable ones.

Moobythegoldensock , in Trump tells Christian supporters: “You won’t have to vote anymore.”

He clarified later in an interview that Christians are known for not voting. They’re like 63% of the country and 68% of voters, but apparently they don’t vote.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

And how exactly is that relevant? “You won’t have to vote” is outright fascism

FoxyFerengi , in Millennials and Gen Xers face higher risk of 17 cancers than previous generations, study suggests

I wonder how much is due to the amount of plastic we’ve been in contact with. I cringe to think about all the plastic wrapped, or Tupperware stored foods I’ve microwaved over my lifetime. Or all the water from plastic bottles I’ve drank.

AmidFuror ,

Most of it is likely explained by obesity. Solve that and then you can worry about plastics and Roundup if you like.

Atsur ,

I wonder how much of the increase in obesity rates is attributable to having un-digestible microplastics stuck in our guts and bowels?

NineMileTower , (edited )

It may or may not have an effect, but the food industry 100% has a lot to do with it.

AmidFuror ,

Are you suggesting that the excess weight deemed to be obesity is from plastics and not fat? And that both the toxicity of the plastic and its distribution in the body mimics what we would expect fat to do?

It seems that regardless it would be very noticeable to doctors performing physicals if many of their obese patients were actually stuffed with microplastics instead. I'm sure you could find positive support for this in the medical literature if it had a modicum of truth to it.

phdepressed ,

Studying microplastics in humans is still new. There are in fact a few studies that roughyl support atsur’s allegation(based on a pubmed search for “microplastics obesity”). These studies don’t have plastic acting as fat but rather that plastic causes signaling for fatty acid synthesis and reduction of lipolytic signaling. So basically plastics signal for you to be fat and can make it harder to lose fat.

Very minimal human data and not much that looks at direct cause-effect but there is at least a correlation that bears consideration.

AmidFuror ,

Slightly more plausible than 5G, at least.

card797 ,

Sugar content is driving obesity. Not plastic consumption.

NastyNative , (edited ) in 6-month-old boy dies in hot car after parent forgot to drop him off at day care: Sheriff

The 40hrs are for father supporting the mother not for both to do 40hrs. This is why shit like this happens , they are forcing us to live a life we were never built for. The less working for some one else my wife does the more energy she puts into our family specially my son.

eatthecake ,

A woman’s place is in the home, right guys? Did you mean our son?

psivchaz ,

I think the point is valid, but maybe not presented well. When the 40 hour work week was established, the understanding was that a single parent could work and earn enough for the family.

Now, two earners are not just common they’re almost required. People are stressed, wondering how they’re supposed to juggle work and family and chores and all of the other things that need to get done and the answer is that they shouldn’t have to juggle so much.

To be clear: women having the ability to work is undeniably a good thing. Women don’t have to be beholden to finding a good husband, they have options now, and workplaces have benefited from new perspectives. But it also got messed up by capitalism making it the default expectation… More people joined the workforce, but wages just sat still and ate up the gains.

I’m not saying women should choose family over career, I’m saying that it should still be an option today for one parent to make enough for the family to live off of so that the other parent can help balance the workload of life better.

eatthecake ,

OP was explicitly sexist throughout their comment starting with:

The 40hrs are for father supporting the mother not for both to do 40hrs.

I think their presentation was a deliberate choice in order to make a traditional, conservative family structure appealing to the left. I’ve seen this talking point come up a few times recently and I’m not going to just ignore tbe sexism. Working from home, shorter work weeks and more of the profits going to workers are ways to tackle people being overworked. Sending women home to work for their husbands is not the solution.

NastyNative ,

In general women will lose respect for a man that is not providing. Thats why I said it.

rautapekoni ,

In general that seems to also be part of yor sexist attitudes.

NastyNative , (edited )

Are you saying that you don’t believe most women will leave men that does not provide for them? Cause thats not sexist it’s Facts! Also why was your take on my post only about sexist instead of the point I made that we are both over worked?

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSQyDEZKJYs -Here are women saying exactly my “SExISt” point.

Overworked? Having trouble providing? Wife looking to divorce you? Figures. You’re pretty nasty. Take your red pill misogyny back to reddit.

NastyNative ,

When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me.

psivchaz ,

Yeah on a second read it’s more explicitly sexist than I initially thought. I still stand by what I said tho.

kandoh ,

Tribes of 150 humans, mixed with all age groups. Mother often dies in labour plus no real way to tell who the father is means the whole tribe pitched in to raise the children.

I think about this a lot. When I say I never want to have children, this is probably the reason why. Like an animal in the zoo, I understand that the environment is not ideal to have offspring in.

Maggoty , in Ford trying to patent system that reports speeding vehicles to police

We’ve had the technology for a long time. And speeding really is a contributing factor to motor vehicle accidents and fatalities. If we’re going to have a society that requires being in cars then we need to be a society with severe rules for putting the rest of us in mortal danger.

bittersweets ,

Make it automatic then, why report a crime when you can limit the speed. Cut out the middle man, also defund the police.

I’d rather that too.

I think he’s just not used to speaking to women who don’t simper to him? Like there wasn’t anything rude in her tone, it was direct and confrontational. The fact is that he’s said a lot of stuff that you can’t exactly repeat in a polite or civil tone. It’s ridiculous to expect everyone else to be civil when you’re saying rude things yourself
