Semi_Hemi_Demigod , in FCC closes “final loopholes” that keep prison phone prices exorbitantly high

A while ago my credit card number was stolen and the only charges were calls from prisons and I wasn’t even mad.

Tenthrow , in FCC closes “final loopholes” that keep prison phone prices exorbitantly high
@Tenthrow@lemmy.world avatar

The game changer about this ruling is that the prisons can no longer charge their often 80% commissions on each call. This is going to make the “for profit” prisons crazy. (State prisons too).

blazera , in In Major Order, Appeals Court Blocks Student Loan Forgiveness And Lower Payments For 8 Million Borrowers
@blazera@lemmy.world avatar

Its open faced at this point, this kind of shit will continue until the rulings are ignored. The reason student loans got so much focus is because unlike other legislation proposals, student loans are entirely at the discretion of the department of education under the executive branch. Like how the DEA has authority over drug scheduling.

The executive branch has these authorities, the judiciary does not have the authority to rescind them, only congress can

Delusional , in Police Really Want a Cybertruck, Email Shows

It doesn’t surprise me that cops want something that is ugly and tacky and completely unnecessary. And they’ll use a shit ton of taxpayer money to get it too.

Oh, um…although, you know I-I started my career several years before, uh, Bob, so you know, I could never really learn anything directly from him…uh, still, I think in a way, in a very meaningful way, that I…uh…uh, all of us, have, uh, have learned from him. You know, that is, by…being a man on television for…for…for so many years, even, even though many of us, we, we didn’t, we didn’t watch his show. Th-thank you.

TechNerdWizard42 , in After recent state law change, the only way to appeal an eviction in Tennessee is pay an entire year's rent upfront

Makes complete sense. If you’re evicted wrongfully, you have an appeal option that doesn’t hurt either party. If you’re evicted for not paying your rent, then… Yeah. Gtfo.

Lots of places worldwide require 1 year of rent upfront, no exceptions. In addition you have a security deposit and utilities deposit. And guess what, the rent is never late that way. Amazing how that works.

shasta ,

How do you get evicted wrongfully?

UmeU ,

If you have a whole year’s rent saved up + security and utility deposit then you have a down payment on a mortgage saved up, what would be the point in renting?

Really curious what places require this absurd 1 year up front, I have never heard of that.
