FuglyDuck , in Trump says he won’t sign RNC loyalty pledge ahead of first debate
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Of course he wouldn’t.

Why would you ask him to? You know his answer. Well he could lie and play coy. But you know he’s not going to abide it.

rayyyy ,

Absolutely. The orange criminal doesn't think he is obliged to follow any rules or laws, or moral standards.

Galexio , in Red Cross ends blood-donation restrictions that singled out gay and bisexual men

About time

Steeve , (edited ) in WHO declares ‘Eris’ Covid strain a variant of interest as cases rise globally

This just means it’s a variant with changes to the virus’ properties. Might come with decreased vaccine efficacy, possible increased severity or spread, but it’s not necessarily an increased public health risk, that’d be a “variant of concern”, which is when the variant significantly changes the way the virus behaves.

Omicron was the last VOC by the way, VOIs haven’t been uncommon.

    Not unusual for sporting events here. But everyone, even the farm kids, are off the bus within an hour after school.

    thebestaquaman , in Ecuador presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio assassinated at campaign event by

    It breaks my heart to see people that are trying to good get hurt or killed by those only trying to turn a profit. I have to wonder, at what point to enough people become so sick of the violence that follows cartels like this that you start getting significant peoples militias set up to protect local communities?

    Oyster_Lust , in Red Cross ends blood-donation restrictions that singled out gay and bisexual men

    I didn’t know that was still in place, since they started testing for AIDS decades ago.

    Throbbing_Banjo , in Trump says he won’t sign RNC loyalty pledge ahead of first debate

    Just don’t let him debate then. Imagine a GOP primary debate without Trump and how hilarious it would be as they struggle to debate actual policy.

    RGB3x3 ,

    Even a debate without Trump would inevitably devolve into an “I support/don’t support Trump” argument as the candidates vie for those voter scraps.

    iAmTheTot ,

    You think they'll debate policy with Trump?

    jasondj ,

    No, but they might debate policy without him.

    LordOfTheChia ,

    I say let him participate via zoom, but with a filter applied. My suggestion:

    Cethin ,

    Why would they just apply a Trump filter? That’s weird. They should at least do something different.

    HobbitFoot ,

    He doesn’t really want to debate, though.

    Meho_Nohome , in Southwest Airlines appeals order requiring its lawyers to take 'religious liberty training'
    @Meho_Nohome@sh.itjust.works avatar

    It sounds like the judge is doing it because the lawyers failed to carry out the original order. Judges can be assholes if you defy them.

    betterdeadthanreddit ,

    A judge who orders anyone to attend a class held by the ADF ought to be removed from the bench. They’re as interested in religious liberty as a shark is interested in veganism.

    Meho_Nohome ,
    @Meho_Nohome@sh.itjust.works avatar

    The way I read it is that he was pissed that they didn’t carry out the original order by the court, so he was just shelling out a punishment that would get his point across.

    Maybe I’m reading too much into it. 🤷

    betterdeadthanreddit ,

    I think you’re on to something with that, it’s just not very judicially appropriate to have a temper tantrum in court and the choice of ADF specifically (since they’re well-known for shenaniganery when it comes to social issues) is suspect. Maybe the judge wasn’t aware of their history and chose them because the name sounded good but in a position where you’re relied upon to use sound and reasonable decision-making skills, it is a problem.

    Neither ignorance nor malice are acceptable from the bench and, after reading up on Judge Brantley Starr’s biography, I’m leaning toward this being a case of his personal values being pushed on others.

    Literally can’t even believe that was a thing!

    DaCookeyMonsta ,

    I think it was set up when AIDS was spreading amongst the gay community before they had a test for it.

    Of course, now they can both test for it and it spread well beyond the gay community for a while so it’s ridiculous that it was still a thing.

    JustAManOnAToilet ,

    They just removed restrictions for Brits that were in the UK between 1980-1996 too, so I guess they’re just getting around to opening things up and this was on the list.

    Hyperreality ,

    Is the UK 1980-96 thing being removed too? That's cool.

    Not just brits btw, but anyone who spent an extended time in the UK in the 80s/90s. IRC due to fears about CJD/Mad Cow's Disease.

    YoBuckStopsHere ,
    @YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world avatar

    I was stationed in UK and couldn’t donate blood as a result. That was only ten years ago. Since they opened it back up I am getting constant calls to donate.

    ZodiacSF1969 ,

    Why? AIDS was a devestating epidemic. The blood banks were slow to act at all, and as a result many haemophiliacs acquired the disease and died. Gay men were the largest risk group for spreading and contracting it, so it makes sense to screen them out.

    Microw ,

    It made sense in a crisis situation 40 years ago. It made zero sense the last few years to have such a discriminatory rule that also neglected to prevent risk from heterosexual anal sex.

    ryannathans ,

    In my country gay men account for 90% of all HIV infections. It’s very hard to ensure blood is free of HIV, as blood is infectious within three months of infection but won’t test positive

    sorebuttfromsitting , in Trump says he won’t sign RNC loyalty pledge ahead of first debate

    i guarantee tr*** hasn’t read Catch-22, but a loyalty pledge? this is dumber than owlshit from all angles.

    dan1101 ,

    Yeah this shit even happens in local elections. Our republican sheriff candidate was decided at a republican meeting rather than an voter primary, and to vote at the meeting you had to sign a pledge. It felt like the year 1905.

    InverseParallax ,

    Didnt think about that at first, but most of catch22 was less purposefully malicious than the gop right now.

    OldWoodFrame , in Elon Musk's Twitter was fined $350,000 for snubbing the special counsel investigating Donald Trump

    LNSY , in Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak'

    Do you ever think how messed up it is people wear crosses? It really is wearing the Iron Age equivalent of a swastika. It’s almost as if they are wearing the exact opposite symbol of Jesus while actively subverting his message. Hmmmmm

    ClockworkOtter ,

    Is it not as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice rather than celebration of how he died?

    pozbo ,
    @pozbo@lemmy.world avatar

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    If I was tortured to death for some shit i didn’t do, the last thing I’d want to see when I resurrect is people claiming to love me with a little version of the torture device that killed me around their necks.

    ClockworkOtter ,

    Yes, well, you aren’t Jesus are you? 🤨

    pozbo ,
    @pozbo@lemmy.world avatar

    I’ll ask dad.

    dustyData ,

    Weird thing is that it started as a symbol. Believers carrying a cross, albeit a small symbolic one, was a sign of sympathy and emulation with the sacrifice Christ did, one of which was carrying his own cross, in order to save mankind from sin. But of course it was distorted and fetishized to the point of ridicule. Christians aren’t exactly the most well versed on the beliefs of their own cult.

    thisbenzingring ,

    A bunch of years ago I was at my brother in laws bachelor party. It was mid summer along a river so we were drinking and enjoying the weather and a bonfire. One dude had this huge cross tattooed on his back, he was BiL’s coworker friend and I had never met him before. He was saying some pretty awful shit and then started to get into racist shit against Mexicans. I can’t remember exactly what I said but it was basically “you say these things while showing off that tattoo? Did you get it because you thought it looked cool or do you even know what the cross means?” My BiL asked me to drop it but its always reminded me of how much some of these people are complete idiots and maybe they are trying to be better but wrapping yourself in these symbols and failing to even meet a baseline of understanding is just so disgusting to me. A thousand years ago, I am sure one of us would have tried to kill each other over that moment.

    Lifebandit666 ,

    This is basically the premise to a Ricky Gervais bit.
