peyotecosmico , (edited ) in Mexico is likely to get its first female president after top parties choose 2 women as candidates

While I love the praise Mexico is getting things seems different when you live in the country.

She hid her friend who was the director of Mexico city’s metro when it collapsed because lack of maintenance and killed several people.

Her political party crippled the main out of the country scholarship organization (Conacyt) while her daughter got one for a PhD in philosophy… when those should be for STEM type of scholarships.

She got there because the president put her there, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

That some (most) Mexicans are afraid he’ll (Lopez Obrador) pull a Nicholas Maduro type of government since more than once he got involved with Maduro type of political characters for official events.

Lopez Obrador complained that past administrations used Pegasus to spy on him while it’s proven that he is doing it to news reporters.

Speaking of news reporters, we got the sadly top record of killing them, people that reported against his administration.

It is well known that he is letting drug cartels work to be at “peace” with them because he complained that Calderon’s administration had a war against them. The issue is that most of the cartel people are uneducated bullies that do whatever they want and one can’t defend yourself because we are afraid.

Lopez Obrador has given lots of power/money to the army and most of us are afraid in case he’s planning to pull a Venezuela here. Army in Mexico isn’t like the US one, think about US cops on steroids. He closed a mayor airport project only because it was started by the last administration, he claimed there was corruption but never showed proof of it, and used an old small military airport instead. That ended up costing way more than the original airport in fines as payment to those “corrupt” people.

While Mexico has tons of oil we all know it isn’t the future and he heavily invested in a refinery at the state where he is from. So much that is screwing other areas.

He has granted government concessions directly to his people. By law there should be a contest.

He has giving us the speech that there’s not enough money that we need to tight the belt while he spends lots of money in other things like Tren Maya or that refinery.

Every freaking day he has a TV show (4 hours or more) where he claims he’s reporting what he’s doing but most of the time he’s just praising his political party and dissing others, he has reporters there asking questions but most of the time they are kissing his feet (Google Lord Molecula, I’ll admit he’s a character because of what he wears but he’s mayor kiss ass). Sometimes he gets a real reporter asking uncomfortable questions but he just disses them “because they are paid by the opposition”.

You can Google the news but most are in Spanish.

Don’t get me wrong, it sounds like I’m against him while I’m supporting the other side, they are all the same, left or right, they just want to fill their pockets while screwing the country.

I’m tired of him being almost a celebrity and some people kissing his feet.

While there’s an internal election that picked Sheinbaum, let me remind you that she was his favorite and his followers treat him like a celebrity. Mexico has a history of presidents designing their sucesor.

Don’t get me wrong lots of people love him, I bet I’ll get reply from a someone defending him.

Again, to me all sides are the same. I’m not left or right, in fact I don’t like politics because I feel it’s just a soap opera for grown ups. Sorry for the wall of text, just venting.

I also have to assume the actual law used was not the two examples cited by the article, as 41 applies to disciplining children (and murder is not discipline but punishment) and 409 is about adultery. Those examples still highlight the problem, but all this it leaves me wondering whether the law even mattered here.

Red wave? It could set the party back for an entire generation or two. I’d laugh if this weren’t such an important right.

EvilBit , in US lawmakers visiting The Hague say Russian President Putin is committing genocide in Ukraine

I mean they’re right, but I feel like the voice of US lawmakers in The Hague shouldn’t be especially impactful, given that we aren’t members of the ICC and we have a policy of literally invading The Hague if they dare to charge us with war crimes.

NocturnalMorning , in ‘That ’70s Show' actor Danny Masterson gets 30 years to life in prison for rapes of 2 women

What’s the difference between this and what Trump did? I’m curious why this one gets prison time, but Trump didn’t. If it was two decades ago when this happened, I would habe thought it was past the statue of limitations.

hypelightfly ,

Criminal vs civil trial due to the statute of limitations. Trump could not be criminally charged as the crime happened too long ago. The law limiting the time was changed in 2006 but that can't be retroactively applied.

The problem is that many alleged victims of sexual assault, like Carroll, cannot avail themselves of the criminal justice system. At the time when Carroll alleges Trump raped her, the statute of limitations for rape in the state of New York was five years. In 2006, New York changed the law and abolished the statute of limitations for certain types of assault, but that change does not apply retroactively to crimes committed before 2006.

NocturnalMorning ,

I don’t understand the retroactive part. The rapes supposedly happened in 2003 in this case, which would apply the same way according to this statement. But it doesn’t seem to be applied that way here.

JoBo ,

Different states?

NocturnalMorning ,

SheeEttin , in A football coach who got job back after Supreme Court ruled he could pray on the field has resigned

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

IWantToFuckSpez ,

That’s from the Bible though Matthew 6:5. All churches were called synagogues back then. It’s not anti-Semitic. The commenter above is quoting this to show that the Bible frowns upon performative praying as this coach is doing.

downpunxx ,
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

calling those praying in synagogues hypocrites is the dictionary definition of antisemitism, cunt

NewNewAccount ,

Was Jesus an anti-Semite?!?

IWantToFuckSpez , (edited )

Early Christians prayed in synagogues since they were Jews who recognized Jesus as their savior. So the person who said that was a Jew, he is known as Jesus. Also the quote is not calling everyone who prays in a synagogue a hypocrite. But people who stand up praying loudly. Asshole
