Hyperreality ,

Seperated for years.

Last I checked he's been linked to Laure Ferrari. Let's go on a wikipedia adventure:

Laure Ferrari (* 6 October 1979, Épinal, France) has been a close associate of former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, and has been working for several right-wing to far-right political organizations and parties, including the French nationalist party (Debout la France). Ferrari was head of the Institute for Direct Democracy in Europe (IDDE), a Eurosceptic think tank, which was accused in 2017 of having illegally diverted public money to the benefits of UKIP.[1] Ferrari was also founding member of "The Mouvement," together with Mischaël Modrikamen and his wife Yasmine Dehaene-Modrikamen,[2] which in 2018 was joined and promoted by Steve Bannon.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laure_Ferrari

Mischaël Modrikamen (born 22 February 1966)[1] is a Belgian right wing politician and lawyer. ... In March 2015, Modrikamen was invited on an official visit to Russia by the Russian government and met officials at the Duma. Modrikamen, himself a strong believer in the transatlantic alliance, nevertheless announced that "we" should find some accommodation with Russia on the Crimea and Ukraine crisis. ... Modrikamen is the only Belgian political leader to have endorsed Trump, and this from the early beginning of his campaign among Republican contenders.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mischa%C3%ABl_Modrikamen

Reuters reported on October 31, 2018, that the Senate Intelligence Committee is conducting a "wide-ranging" investigation of Bannon's activities during the campaign, including knowledge he may have had about any contacts between Russia and two campaign advisors, George Papadopoulos and Carter Page, as well as his role with Cambridge Analytica.[148] ... In August 2020 members of the senate intelligence committee told the DOJ they believed that Bannon, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. may have misled them with their testimony about Russia investigation. ... Bannon has defended Trump's ties to and praise for Russian president Vladimir Putin.[357][372] He expressed a belief that traditionalists see Russia as an ally. Bannon said they "believe that at least Putin is standing up for traditional institutions, and he's trying to do it in a form of nationalism—and I think that people, particularly in certain countries, want to see the sovereignty for their country. They want to see nationalism for their country" rather than a "pan-European Union".[372] According to the book War for Eternity, Bannon met notorious Russian ideologue Aleksandr Dugin in Rome in 2018 to advocate closer relations between the United States and Russia, as well as Traditionalist philosophy ... [etc. etc. etc. etc.]

sab ,

It's disturbing how much evidence exists that all these right wing parties and politicians are Russian shills, yet it somehow seems to keep escaping common knowledge.

Nah, thanks. We don't want him. Maybe if he doesn't like life in UK he should try death in UK? I heard it's beautiful.

IAmWiking , in Nigel Farage is now considering whether “life was worth living” in the UK.

As it says in the article, he's been designated a PEP because he allegedly took money from the Russian government. He denies this but hasn't sued the person making the allegation. Even in his rant on GB news he lists Ukraine first as a potential state known for bribery. He excuses Russian actions at every turn, it's clear he's getting something from them.

He denies this but hasn't sued the person making the allegation

Setting aside the issue of whether-or-not he has received money, I don't think that it's a great idea to make the expected norm for someone to sue someone else if they're innocent of something that someone claims that they did. Kind of results in everyone running around with lawyers on hair-trigger.

Anomandaris ,
@Anomandaris@kbin.social avatar

Between normal people, or even minor celebrities, I would absolutely agree. But Farage is a notable entity in politics and journalism, one would hope that being accused of corruption, bribery, and treason would be ruinous for such a career. That is absolutely the sort of thing you would sue over, if you believed you had a good chance at winning.

Parsnip8904 , in Breaking: Supreme Court Shoots Down Affirmative Action.
@Parsnip8904@beehaw.org avatar

A little unrelated context that sort of lends a bit of background to this will make things equal claim.

I was at one time an international non-white student at a US institution. After joining, during orientation I find out that the test scores and metrics required for international students is insanely high compared to US citizens. Like in a subject based international test, I had to score above 95th percentile while most of the students from the US did not even write the test or if they had, scored on average around 75th.

To add more context, I come from a country with far weaker education system and it cost me around half an year of savings to pay for this test.

So, I find it hilarious ridiculous when people think that any of these institutions are remotely fair. I understand how for these institutions citizens > aliens. Now try transplanting this context on to different race groups within the country.

I'm not a huge fan of affirmative action or its local equivalent, but I understand why it is needed and it is the responsibility of the government and judiciary to assess it's impact before deciding to do away with it.

I also wish they would focus more on things like, nutrition, good school environment, truancy, access to healthcare and so on for disadvantaged groups instead of trying to act at a level where most of the disadvantaged people cannot reach. Still something is better than nothing.

along_the_road , in US actively considering giving cluster munitions to Ukraine

They really should. There is very limited supply of precision munitions and US plenty of this type of munition.

FracturedPelvis ,

cluster bombs are the cause of A LOT of pain. They are indiscriminate, and they kill civilians for years AFTER conflicts have ended.

along_the_road ,

I understand that can lead to unexploded ordinance however Ukraine is facing a life and death struggle right now and they can use all the ammo that they can get. Of course it's not ideal but US/Europe has very limited supply of precision ammo. And until they can increase production Ukraine needs something to use against dug in Russian positions. Ultimately the decision should be up to Ukrainians since they are the ones that will have to be doing the clean up.

Dunno, Reuters is pretty unbiased if you're willing to filter through it. I just hate to see what's practically the German version of Rupert Murdoch being spammed everywhere. There's plenty of other news sites out there that aren't known for having such shitty owners that push divisiveness. They own the German BILD, WELT, B.Z. and others, but those are the most controversial & well known ones nationally.

To quote Max Goldt:

"The Bild newspaper is an organ of infamy. It is wrong to read it. Someone who contributes to this newspaper is socially absolutely unacceptable. It would be wrong to be friendly or even polite to one of its editors. One must be as unkind to them as the law will just allow. They are bad people who do wrong."

xNIBx , in EU should not 'lower the bar' to take in Ukraine, says Denmark

I know it's been 80 years since WW2 but it seems a lot of people have forgotten the main reason for the creation of EU. The EU was created in order is to avoid wars in Europe. It might sound ridiculous to many, but Europe used to have A LOT of wars in the past.

Economic criteria, corruption, etc are all great metrics but in the end, it is about avoiding wars. And a Ukraine inside the EU means a safer EU, a safer Ukraine and even a safer Russia. Russia wont be able to go full retard and Ukraine would have to compromise and reach some peace agreement in order to join the EU.

Inclusivity is very important for the EU. Reminder that even Russia could join the EU but a country like Russia, which sees itself as a super power, wouldnt want to be the 5th-6th most important member of the EU(in economic terms).

Ronno , in EU should not 'lower the bar' to take in Ukraine, says Denmark
@Ronno@kbin.social avatar

But of course. In the same way that you don't make a test easier for the student that gets bullied.
The criteria and rules to enter the EU have been created through decades of small changes, ensuring that every element in our norms and values is covered. Skipping some of these steps will only result in further misalignment in the future, causing friction. Look for example at Hungary. I am not sure if they took this train of thought/direction recently or if their stance towards the EU was always like this, but if it is the latter, then the EU failed to judge that in the joining process.

My personal take on this is that the EU has already become too big. It used to be small at first, with countries that shared similar beliefs and culture. I think the EU today is way too polarized to be effective. Sure, it is now bigger on the world stage, making a larger fist for our policies. But has also become more difficult to draft policies, due to the cultural and economic differences of its members.

UpperBroccoli , in French Gov Wants to Inject Domain Blocking Lists Directly into Web Browsers

Do... do they understand how this works? How anything works?

Hirom , in French Gov Wants to Inject Domain Blocking Lists Directly into Web Browsers

Not any list. A government provided domain blocking list.

A reasonable way to balance safety and freedom could be to require including some malware blocking list, and let browsers choose whether to offer this as opt-in or opt-out.

This way users could easily protect themselves, or just disable it if there's over-blocking. Browsers could choose which blocking list provider they include (government or independent provider).
