@Duchess@yiffit.net avatar

thing is, dogs evolved to obey and seek approval from humans. it’s why so many of them will just take abuse for a long time and then finally snap.

TTH4P ,

Right? If anyone can sense anything, it’s the cats who see all the ghosts in my basement.

illi ,

So… how did ghosts got to your basement…?

Duchess , in Can't have to many
@Duchess@yiffit.net avatar

i’ve never kept cats but i feel like 3 is a fine amount to have. 4 is a little much though.

stebo02 , in Always trust dogs

no one is evil from their own point of view, nor their dog’s

FlihpFlorp ,

What’s the saying? Everyone’s the hero of their own story

TrontheTechie ,

I prefer “I always had the feeling I could never be the villain cause the villain in the films is always back lit”.

Katzastrophe , in Only legends do it!

I myself like using a mod so that it automatically repairs itself

stappern , in It's Open Source!

Completely missing the point. Collective action is what makes open source software accessible to everybody.

You dont NEED to be able to audit yourself. Still safer than proprietary software every way you look at it.

Lennard ,

While I generally agree, the project needs to be big enough that somebody looks through the code. I would argue Microsoft word is safer than some l small abandoned open source software from some Russian developer

SeaJ , in It's Open Source!

You can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a cow’s ass but I’d rather take the butcher’s word for it.

There are people that do audit open source shit quite often. That is openly documented. I’ll take their fully documented word for it. Proprietary shit does not have that benefit.

SaltyIceteaMaker , in fun fact

Diarrhea?

radioactiveradio ,

No, that’s butt soup

ichbinjasokreativ , in It's Open Source!

The point is not that you can audit it yourself, it’s that SOMEBODY can audit it and then tell everybody about it. Only a single person needs to find an exploit and tell the community about it for that exploit to get closed.

Senuf , in What's your "old person" trait?

My old person traits are most of all posted here because I am an old person.

But I’ll add that my old person traits is that I think a living wage should support… er… living, including a place to live, food to eat, paying for services, buying clothes, getting decent public health and education, and even have spare money for your free time (hobbies, eat out, theatre, concerts, etc.).

Cypher , in It's Open Source!

Luckily there are people who do know, and we verify things for our own security and for the community as part of keeping Open Source projects healthy.

danc4498 ,

Open source software is safe because somebody knows how to audit it.

And to a large extent, there is automatic software that can audit things like dependencies. This software is also largely open source because hey, nobody’s perfect. But this only works when your source is available.

HandwovenConsensus , in What's your "old person" trait?

I like having a keyboard and mouse. Doing things on a smartphone is a last resort.

tunetardis , in Mmm yes fascinating

I’ve always wondered about the cassava root: a staple food product eaten by millions that contains cyanide. It takes a multi-step, multi-day process to make it safe to consume. How many bothans had to die to bring us this information? Something to ponder next time you’re enjoying some tapioca.

RedditRefugee69 , in Mmm yes fascinating

Unsolicited fun fact: you can test whether a berry is poisonous by first rubbing it on your skin, if there’s no reaction, rub it on the outside your face. Nothing? Rub it on your lips. Then eat a tiny bit. Then eat more!

internet piracy? i never ever would do such a thing, it is illegal. instead i will pay for 5 streaming services and never own anything. remember, you wouldn’t steal a car.

somnuz , in Think about it

The only thing I would (totally naively and magically) wish for is some kind of really well organized and curated time capsule mainly for movies and music preservation.

I don’t want all the music and movies for myself, I wouldn’t be able to watch/hear it all but I wish for anyone from any time in the future — to have a simple/legal option to just dig anything out, public domain or whatever will work best.

People have created some amazing gems.

Well, yes. This exist — I am really grateful for that, but… This audio library now contains 15M positions. It is a big number, no doubt about it.

Then, Spotify has over 80M files in the library with around 4M podcasts.

Estimated existing music amount is unclear but around 90-200M and growing all the time.

And suddenly 15M is getting somehow small in terms of preserving, and this is with music only.

With movies I even remember some interviews with Tarantino and Nolan talking about how badly some movies are being mistreated, lost cuts, not even close to proper/safe long time storing, fires, accidents and so on…
