I look at lemmy.world all occasionally to get a sense of what I’m interested in but don’t know it yet. Then I subscribe to help expand the variety for everyone. Not that lemm.ee is all that small
Virtually identical absolutely. But in my personal experience over the last few months, I see content that’s in lemmy.world that’s not on lemm.ee
For a while, because content was more thin, I’d run through all of active, then all of hot, then I’d look at lemmy.world just to see if there was content I hadn’t seen yet
So I don’t know enough about the inner workings, but on Reddit I never browsed all at all - it was 100% communities I’d subscribed to. At the moment I’m happy with Lemmy All, but if in the future when content gets too much, would I say, be able to host my own instance in my Android device and my subscriptions will just pull in the content I’m interested in? That way I am not putting load on other instances, and I can take my configuration with me without needing a cloud service?
My understanding is you can’t host your own instance on an Android device, you’d need a server. You could stand up a server on Oracle Cloud, their Always Free tier is pretty generous.
The main issue is that Lemmy instances, by default, only know about their local communities and remote communities that the users of that server have deliberately subscribed to. Some smaller instances are running federation helpers which are bots that search for remote communities to fix this.
You subscribe to individual communities. So unless a user or the admin already subscribed to a community there won't be any content there from those communities.
Even after subscribing only new content (and old content that has had replies/likes) will show up.
Your subscribed will be the same. All will differ as it grabs everything everyone on that instance is subscribed to.
Ex. If you’re on lemmyworld you’ll see everything there by default but if you swap to instance X and nobody in x is subbed to niche.community@lemmyworld then it won’t be brought to your All
I honestly I don’t get why people don’t just, y’know, join instances that are more local. It would solve the “everything’s in a different language!” Issue too because now the main foreign language is, y’know, one you speak.
Or - yeah I did the same I joined a Finnish instance because I live right next door and it seemed like the logical thing to do and screw Denmark
Okay, granted, but only using the term “bogged down” adds to the misconception that the problem is too many accounts on the server. It should be clarified that it comes from a deliberate outside source.
That is simply not true. Society can be maintained so long as the average individual contributes at least as much as they get. That’s the whole point of European healthcare systems: everyone pays a little bit so the few individuals who need them can get expensive treatments.

It's 2023 people, no reason to be ignorant about "foreign" countries anymore. Japanese is practically the world's official Asian language due to Anime and Manga, video games, etc. which is highly ironic given the aims of Imperial / Fascist Japan and the absolutely wrongheaded way they were going about it.
I bet you never miss a chance to correct people calling surimi sushi or pluralizing Japanese nouns and are also tons of fun at parties…
Sometimes using the colloquial term for something is about other people understanding without further explanation, not ignorance. You don’t call velcro “hook and loop fastener” either, do you?
Doesn’t matter if you’re technically correct if no one knows what you’re talking about. And that’s really the purpose of language. To understand what the other is saying. Would be nice if people started using the proper term but we can’t even get people to agree that vaccines are good, polluting is bad, or that 1x1=1 (thanks Terrance).
Now I only have game sessions that last for about 10+ minutes and only about 3 times per day at most.
My enjoyment in gaming has died out a few months ago and I have only been working for one year(23yo). My friends are still trying to get me back to Valorant and I’m having trouble explaining I have so many other important things that I need to do other than grinding Valorant. I just don’t have the time to improve my skill at that game because it requires so many hours and so many of those hours could give me a good coding project for my portfolio which would improve my job prospects. I do enjoy coding but coding all day outside of work is turning me into a robot.
That’s quite true actually. I’ve had way more enjoyment playing singleplayer games than multiplayer games(unless they are casual coop like Stardew and the like) nowadays.
Single player with cheats is where it’s at. Sometimes I like challenge in my games and with some games it’s the challenge that gives it flavor, like some wargames. But if it’s just a game where you play for some story or it’s about building stuff, give me Creative mode.
Also, “cheating” as long as everyone is in on it in multiplayer is fun. Of course trashing public lobbies with aimbots in CoD is just stupid, but playing a coop game like Raft or Payday with a friend and having the option of just turning off some of the difficulty elements so that you can focus on what makes it fun for you is awesome.
I’m a bit iffed by Payday 3 having some super strong anticheat that also kills mods. I’m not big on public lobbies anyways, why can’t I just give my money for the developer, get a game and play how I like it? Anticheat for public lobbies makes sense. But please let me turn it off for me and my mate who just want to have fun and are both in on it.
I stopped playing online competitive games a while back, the last ones were overwatch (1) and dota. Now I almost only play solo games and I have a lot of fun. Currently 110+ hours in TOTK and I’m far from done with it. It’s a category that’s far from dead and there are any flavor that could fit your tastes.
The only online game I keep playing is MK8D because frustration never last long and there’s no ELO ranking to be obsessed with. Also Splatoon once in a while.
Competitive games ruin the mood a lot for me. I know it differs from person to person, but as a person who usually takes games seriously it’s hard for me not to care about my skill within the game. It took me a pretty long period to stay away from competitive/skill-based gaming(fps and rhythm games) to be able to treat games as a casual thing.
I play val exclusively socially. Grab a couple friends and play a couple spike rushes or swift plays. Just hope on to chat to strangers in VC basically.
It was enlightening. Like I got my lips around the base. I pulled it out just fine. Maybe these folks were like deep throating these light bulbs, which honestly I think the porn industry might have influenced these light bulb deep throats.
