Do 8 billions of people using single use plastic have the same impact of 20 billionaires on their yachts? This cannot be that difficult, guys. Billionaires are absolutely a problem but our actions as individuals are extremely important anyway.
That’s not actually correct, it’s not change in individual actions that needs to happen but systemic change. People act in the way that makes sense for them to act given the circumstances they’re in on individual level. What needs to change is the economic system to move away from consumerism, production of disposable goods, planned obsolescence and so on. This can only happen when the economy is publicly owned and directed towards the goal of profitability as opposed to towards creating as much profit as possible for people who own the companies.
Nobody de-federated. People saw that there was a the_Donald community on sh.itjust.works + a lot of people from said server defending it (“just ignore it bro”). That triggered probably bad memories ala spez defending t_D because of “VaLuABlE DiSCuSsIoN”, while they brigaded and harrased countless people during their time on Reddit. Some people got a little bit carried away and demanded de-federation and a couple of trolls throw gazoline in the fire.
This is one of the personal fears I have about society’s where ‘the mob’ decides. Most people haven’t had their fate decided by a mob before and so might not know what this means or how it pans out most of the time.
I believe it is imperative that we have something in place to avoid mob actions - not a central authority per say but possibly a collective code we all believe in and abide by. We could perhaps establish what is (un)acceptable on a fediversal (universal) scale and what is (un)acceptable on a local instances (instances decide this themselves obv.)
In the future we might need Lemmy/ActivityPub to be able to define posts/accounts/communities that are accessible across the Fediverse and those that are only accessible to users of that instance.
Hence we wouldn’t have the problem where for instance: members of one instance think pictures of furries is not NSFW content but members from other instances think it is
While I did enjoy this meme, that’s not going to solve the problem. They would be replaced pretty quickly with people who are equally as dubious. That’s just the system we live in.
Per liter, dairy milk requires 628.2 L of freshwater vs almond milk requiring 371.46 L of freshwater. And if you use something like oat milk instead that gets you to 48.24 L
People who have good reasoning skills can see it for what it is, so we need to collectively get into the habit of calling out disingenuous manipulation and put a stop to it. Rather than focusing on refuting each specific point, draw attention to the most ridiculous points, refute one or two, then stop engaging entirely because it is self-defeating.
The fact that this man is still given televised platforms after everything is unreal. All that does is give the illusion that there is substance to his manipulation. He needs to be shunned to his echo chamber and the world needs to move on.
Fahrenheit is better for weather, and I’ll fight anyone about it.
We use Celsius in the lab because it makes math easier, it’s great.
But Fahrenheit is basically a 0-100 scale of how hot it is outside and that makes perfect sense for describing outside conditions relative to human sensory perception.
That isn’t what gaslighting means. The term refers to a type of psychological abuse involving the denial of a person’s own reality as a means of gaining power and control of a victim. It is not simply suggestion.
