I have a theory a user got banned, and is making it their personal mission to ruin .world’s performance. Please donate to your home instance owner(s) if they have that set up. Even if it’s just a little, it can make everyone’s experience better.

Cuz the devs explicitly named it after the peanut butter and even gave it a catchphrase to make sure you pronounced it correctly. It was a marketing campaign. “Choosy developers choose gif”.
The same way? There’s thousands of words in the English language with the same pronunciation and different spellings. This isn’t the dunk you think it is.
Besides, gif existed first. If JIF wanted to use the name without confusion maybe they should have come out first (missed it by half a decade) or come up with a catchy phrase.
Lemmy.world is run by the same people as mastodon.world. I guess a lot of users from mastodon.world went to Lemmy.world and the rest was word of mouth.
Yeah, people just want a “generic” place because they generally don’t want to be pidgeon holed. I have nice and inoffensive lemmy.world and lemmy.today accounts because of this. I’m basically a vanilla NPC in my life and “sh.itjust.works” is simply too spicy!

I think the draw is that it’s trying really hard to basically be Reddit on the fediverse. For the people who use the fediverse as a Reddit alternative that is probably seen as good.

nothing. lemmy.ml just makes more sense to me.i figure the devs of the protocol should be able to maintain and update their own server, and so far that has proven to be correct.
Maybe if all you’re looking at is the big AAA releases (even then I don’t agree). But there have been so many cool indie and AA games that have come out in recent years. Last year most of my favorite games were games I’d never heard of before they released. If you can’t find games worth playing then you’re not looking hard enough.
