What are some companies which will hire freshers in cyber security? I see many job posts which need experienced people but very few for entry level.

iamak ,

Thanks a lot!

iamak ,

What are some good resources to learn for Network+ and Security+? I want to do Security+ but people have told me that it’ll need Network+ concepts too. So I’ll start learning with Network+.

iamak ,

Oh that looks like a really good website. Thanks for sharing! :)

iamak , (edited )

Check out Shelter. Iuse Shelter myself but I have heard that Insular does the same thing. Shelter has an option of installing from APK directly into work profile. I tried installing different versions just now and it worked.

Edit: Hadn’t properly read your post. Changed my reply to better fit the question

iamak ,

I think Signal is against that because it compromises their security model. Also I think they aren’t required by law to implement it but I’m not sure.

iamak ,

I think mint has timeshift enabled by default. Try going back to when the games worked and figure out what change caused the gamss to break?

iamak ,

Try flashing GrapheneOS if you’re comfortable with it?

iamak ,

Yes the DMA. WhatsApp has the skeleton code for it in place I think

Question about Proton

I am buying a friend’s PC for games. I want to avoid windows if at all possible, and I’m wondering what people’s experience using Proton in Linux for gaming has been. Are there certain publishers who use libraries Proton doesn’t handle well? Are there distros to avoid using with proton? Any other notes I should be aware...

iamak ,

I’m using proton + Arch for over a year and I have no issues running any games (Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti). Only issues I had were with anti cheat.

iamak ,

I use i3 which exists only for Xorg.

iamak ,

I’m interested. Can you tell me more about it?

iamak ,

Okay. Also how beneficial would this be for my résumé if I’m trying to get into cyber security field?

iamak ,

As an Indian I would say India lacks in physical infrastructure - roads, public transport (although this is improving rapidly), etc. However having lived in Europe I will say that the technological infrastructure is very good over here - banking and payment systems (UPI is way better than the payment systems in Europe), online services, internet quality, etc.

iamak ,

OSM is good for public transport?

iamak ,

Oh. In Dublin at least Google Maps is pretty good for public transport. OSM doesn’t show correct routes

iamak ,

You could say Russian landing was more impactful and groundbreaking

iamak ,

Elden Ring looks beautiful. You just need to get used to fighting a boss 100+ times before killing him ;_;

Horizon series is good. The 2nd game, Forbidden West is so good I used to open the photo mode at random spots and take pictures because I found the scenery beautiful. I would definitely recommend it.

Ghost of Tsushima is also beautiful. However I got bored pretty quickly but others have enjoyed the game so maybe you’ll like it.

Also Skyrim with mods (like ENB) can be beautiful as well :p

iamak ,

I hope that the DMA gets passed in the EU. It’ll (hopefully) break the monopoly worldwide

iamak ,

I only heard of it because I follow Matrix blog.

I saw the technical discussions (if you are a tech person I would recommend watching those on YT) and it seems that EU is trying to find some middle ground where companies won’t have to incur a lot of losses but still be open and create a fair environment for newcomers.

iamak ,

Oh wow. TIL! Any recommendws sources? I want to read the full coverage

iamak ,

True. However there are certain advantages

  • WhatsApp gets only a part of your data (coz many people might be on different apps)
  • You don’t have to run WhatsApp on your device so they can’t collect that data either

I know it’s not perfect but better than the current scenario and a step in the right direction

iamak ,

Google has also kept RCS proprietary. Google shares the blame as well imo

iamak ,

Lmao my bad. Thanks I’ll read up about it.

iamak ,

Yes. I don’t endorse WhatsApp. What I meant is if you chat with 15 people out of which 5 use WhatsApp, only those 5 chats are potentially readable by Meta. Because those are the only chats which will get sent to Meta servers.

So you have the benefit that the other 10 chats are not readable by Meta.

iamak ,

At this point I just assume Meta, Google and Apple have my number due to people storing the number on their devices. Amazon also might have it because people might have paid me via Amazon Pay (and given it access to contacts).

iamak ,

Why was it allowed in the first place? Generally I’m pro freedom but in this case the phones should be locked down and there should be a whitelist of apps they can install. It’s not a personal phone.

iamak ,

I think a large part of why Framework laptops worked and no mobile equivalent has come up is because most of phone ecosystem is not free. When I install Lineage OS on my phone I always expect a decrease in the quality of photos because lot of the camera stuff is proprietary and baked into the OEM ROM.

I get that the Framework equivalent of phones can manufacture their own devices and write FOSS firmware for it but it’s a big hurdle which not many can afford.

On the contrary in laptops/PCs you can install Linux and expect most of the hardware to work out of the box. So until phone ecosystem gets as free as PC ecosystem (I doubt it will considering how the corporations work) I doubt a Framework equivalent will be available for phones.

Note app recommendation to replace notion

Hey, I’m looking for a note app to replace notion. The main features I’m looking for are the ability to have different notebooks (or folders), the ability to have notes available offline(something I recently realized notion does not do), the ability so search in notes for words or phrases, and preferably a sync feature to...

iamak ,

Quillpad is nice. I’ve been using it for about a year now. It satisfies all the 4 requirements as well.

iamak ,

Why do people have to pronounced it in any way? Why not say G-I-F? I’ve been saying it like that since before I knew about the huge debate💀

iamak ,

Is it different from a pressure cooker? Because pressure cooker is similar (add water, rice, start cooking, wait for X whistles) and has multiple use cases.

iamak ,

Ah okay. Thanks!

iamak ,

Nextcloud by itself is pretty secure. They have a docker container to set everything up. So the weak link would be how you host it. If you host it on a vps, can the vps be trusted and if you self host it can you set the firewalls properly. Source: I’m currently setting it up on a Odroid N2+

iamak ,

I have major issues with this game’s battling system. The original game’s combat is pretty complex but it is well balanced with 6 different stats, types, abilities, etc. Pokemon go simplifies it into type advantages and a number (CP). CP is more affected by atk than def and hp. This (amongst other things) trivializes def and hp stats.

I was hopeful that they would rework this with pvp but they didn’t. Instead they tried to copy the Smogon tiers (the different leagues) but somehow made the original combat which requires a lot of strategy to a dumb tap fast to win combat.

I used to play Pokemon Go a lot till covid and I kept hoping for better updates and new mechanics (I even theorized how they could translate the turn based combat to real time) but it seemwd they didn’t want to make it anymore than what it was so I quit.

iamak ,

I think you are confusing soulless with dead. It’s more alive than ever yes but it has become monotonous. The original feeling of individuality of websites has been reduced to the monotonity you see when you visit different websites. For example, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram or even their federated alternatives like Mastodon and Lemmy (I haven’t used Pixelfed) are designed in a similar way to that users feel familiar and don’t get turned off from using the website. This is just one example I can think of now.

iamak ,

Maybe I need to expand the pool of sites I frequent. Any recommendations?

iamak ,

I don’t follow politics but yes I do use a RSS reader. Also you suggested US centric stuff and I don’t live there.

But yeah I get your point

iamak ,

UPI is the best mode of payment. I doubt anyone can change my mind.

iamak ,

I would add Digilocker as well. Completed removed my need for a wallet. But it’s not as great as these 2

iamak ,

Lol makes sense

How exactly do Matrix bridges work? Are they secure?

What I’m looking for ultimately is a universal chat type app like Beeper that can handle Signal and SMS, however, reading this about it gives me pause. It would be nice if I could get all my peeps on matrix, but since it was so hard to get them on to Signal, I think the best I can hope for is something than can handle matrix,...

iamak ,

Why do you want them to switch from Signal? Federation? Other than that Signal’s great. Idk specifically about Signal bridge but I’m in a room with Telegram and IRC bridged and both bridges work pretty well. The room was bridged to XMPP as well but XMPP bridge was weird (resent random messages sometimes) so we removed it. Give it a try though and if possible tell me how it works? I’m curious :p

iamak ,

Yes I do that when I can! It’s super convenient with the map editing plugin. I probably wouldn’t contribute if it didn’t exist xD.

I’ll check out street complete thanks!
