Came from using Sync for probably close to a decade on Reddit, so I’m definitely a creature of habit switching back for it on Lemmy. That being said, I tried ALL the apps looking for a solid experience and nothing delivers like Sync (opinion). All of them were missing something that completed my experience, was that experience coloured by my time with Sync on Reddit, sure. For all the options Sync gives me I’m willing to pay the dev half the cost of a steak dinner. I’ve already spent 100x longer on Sync for Lemmy than it would take me to eat said steak.

As for FOSS, let’s just say it’s not the be all / end all. Look at all the options that Sync brought to the table in a month that Lemmy hasn’t added in the whole of its development.

Personally I feel like most of the folks complaining about Ads in Sync are just complaining to complain. The FOSS crowd is also the most likely to use ad blocking, filtered dns providers, pi-hole, adguard etc and if that’s the case they won’t even see a single Ad.

nodsocket ,

I am willing to use Sync only because of my ability to block all the ads. Once something better comes around I will use that.

Learning what fire actually is, like what the flames are literally made of, blew my freaking mind years ago.

Fire is literally just gas (and fine solid particulates suspended therein) that contains so much thermal energy that its black body radiosity has reached into the visual spectrum.

There are some types of flames that are NOT bright enough to be visible under ambient lighting conditions and can only be seen in environments that are very dark!

Pure ethanol, for instance, combusts dark enough that you can’t see the flames in daylight conditions, or even under strong artificial lighting.

Rhaedas ,

Methanol fires in racing are scary. No flame, no smoke, just burning you.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I had an RC car as a kid with a small combustion engine that used methanol. When I and my friend realised that methanol burns without a flame we got so excited. It brought a new dimension to our army men shenanigans. That and discovering home made napalm.

Instigate ,

Oh man, the homemade napalm comment really hits home for me. How did you use to make it? My friend always said that it was by melting polystyrene foam in petrol (no heat needed, it simply melts on contact).

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Yeah we used styrofoam and melted it into this weird goo that sticks everywhere. Was dope.

Still swearing though lol. Wasn’t that what got her fired lmfao

KindredFlare ,

No, I think it was mostly telling the Space Council member to suck their member.

007v2 ,

Right some folks in here pretending they were fired for saying fuck when actually they were fired for saying “suck my dick, I work at nasa” to an important member of the space network lol

DragonTypeWyvern ,

She got fired because the brain rotted boomers aren’t all dead yet.

In another ten years you’ll be able to be harmlessly excited on the Internet without losing your job.

007v2 ,

You won’t be able to talk say shit like that to your boss (or people in your company) no matter what generation they came from so I’m not really sure what you are talking about. This isn’t a case of someone being excited and getting in trouble for cussing. Would you want people working for you that acted that way towards you?

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Suck my dick you bootlicking loser, it was a tweet only a dumbass would take seriously and was clearly not meant as insubordination. A reasonable, non-senile person would just remind the new hire of the organizational standards.

007v2 ,

Touch a nerve? The funny thing is that is exactly what the member of the organization did and the person responded back suck their dick and balls. So they were warned of their actions, and then followed it up by doubling down. Hope I didn’t ruin your day, you seemed to really take this to heart. It’s no big deal, take a walk and calm down.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Yeah, that’s the joke. Well spotted super sleuth.

BackStabbath ,

I think it would just generally be stupid to say that. Boomers or no boomers. It sort of reflects badly on the organisation and I’m not even slightly suprised that they wouldn’t be pleased about it. You seem weirdly angry.

Fine, nvm. You’re just not a very pleasant person. I do know what a lib is, it’s just that a weird stereotype that all of them are over-sensitive is not really accurate.

    GentlemanLoser ,

Homer Hickam is a fairly famous name in NASA history. She didn’t just tell a Space Council member to suck her dick and balls. The film October Sky is about his life growing up as the son of a coal miner and pushing past his dad’s disdain for highfalutin rocket engineering. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Homer Hickam. It’s pretty good. So what are you up today?

    _number8_ ,

    there’s nothing wrong with swearing

    Astrealix ,
    @Astrealix@lemmy.world avatar

There ain’t, but he said “language” because NASA had like some kinda code of conduct for that kinda communications online and she broke it iirc by swearing — and then by calling one of the biggest names in NASA to suck her dick and balls, even though he didn’t want her to lose her job over it.

    rog ,

Absolutely not. A company gets to choose who it hires and fires though, and if you act in a way contrary to their rationale then they have no obligation to keep you around.

There’s nothing wrong with getting an explicit photorealistic tattoo of a vulva on your forehead either, but your boss at the childcare centre might not like it and you’ll probably lose your job.

kitonthenet , in Learn from your mistakes

it's bullshit that that's what got her job pulled tho.

    thrawn ,

The person she told that to, Homer Hickam, had no say in the firing, expressed disappointment after, and helped her get another job after (though I do not recall if it was successful). In an era where companies are increasingly sensitive about what employees post online, she had it much much better than just about anyone else in the world fired for the same thing at least.

And really… perhaps I’m old fashioned, but posting stuff like that in the same tweet as your NASA offer was pretty poorly thought out. NASA doesn’t feel like the type of organization that wants its employees associated with messaging like that.

    _number8_ ,

i mean so? it’s on an anonymous twitter account; it could easily be some random loon. they didn’t have to track her down

    rog ,

They obviously knew her twitter prior to offering the job and were actively monitoring it. The NASA guy doesnt just go around telling people to watch their language in tweets. They were keeping an eye on them, and they fucked up.

    007v2 ,

Right, it clearly wasn’t anonymous if someone knew who she was to fire here. That previous comment wasn’t thought through lol

    Melody ,

While I’m usually all for that sort of consequence to happen to someone who is legitimately being gross or creepy; I don’t think they should’ve actually fired her. Legitimately it should’ve been a stern warning and a request to apologize for the statement at worst.

Do I think it was a good idea to tweet it? Of course not. Was it unprofessional? Probably. I guess it depends on if the tweet or statement was made IRL or on Twitter via an alternate account.

    EhList ,
    @EhList@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah if they work for NASA we should be able to presume they are intelligent enough to know not to do this.

    ReakDuck ,

Intelligence is not really one thing. Even if the person was very intellegent, emotions play a high role in behaviour too

    visak ,

And it was positive emotion. It was joy for getting the job and the “suck my dick” comment I read as “let me have this”. And I’m an old dude.

Was it professional or a wise idea? No, but it’d like an astronaut on their first space walk saying “Holy fuck this is amazing.”

    kitonthenet ,

just about anyone else in the world fired for the same thing at least.

    mikeboltonshair ,
    @mikeboltonshair@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve pretty much only ever browsed Reddit on mobile (and only ever through an app) and with Lemmy it’s only on mobile, I was thinking anyone using the computer to browse is probably someone who is more likely to be working in an office, I’m not an office worker so I’ve never had quick easy access to a computer
