From what I've seen from experimenting, the only accounts that seem to have weight on each other on lemmy are my lemmy and kbin accounts. There is definitely room for abuse if I were to make many lemmy accounts accross different instances, which I have seen people abuse, especially on lemmy's version of r/place.
I get maybe 2 upvotes at most, and even then I don't usually upvote my own content because it's unsatisfactory. Upvotes tell me people are engaging with my content and like what they see. It does me no good if I know it's just me. The only time I've ever upvoted my own content is on very small communities where no one on would ever see the content otherwise.
I try to be ethical with my interactions with fediverse, but I definitely see the room for abuse.

But I suspect people doing this are more about getting exposure for a point of view or link.
If you post on lemmy and boost on kbin your followers on mastadon I think can see it as a post. So it pushes it all around without a repost and links back to the original.
I think it is pretty good that this stuff works together mostly seamlessly.
I don’t think there would be a proper way to enforce it either. The whole idea is to be able to pack your things to any instance at a moments notice. Mixed with how there is no central record of accounts and their IPs and everything is so spread out, there is no way of knowing if someone is a sockpuppet or just a backup
Honestly, this is the one thing that makes me wonder how long Lemmy really has…
Propaganda machines and astro turf farms can essentially move the needle any time they want here. It’s enough that I kind of want voting removed completely… It simply has no true validity on Lemmy.
Ah yes, CRPGs, famously a genre that has never had any releases since the 90’s.
Except Path of Exile, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Pathfinder: Kingmaker/Wrath of the Righteous, Divinity Original Sin 1&2, Pillars of Eternity 1&2, the Shadowrun series, Disco Elysium…
It’s perfectly fine to have preferences, but don’t shit on a genre because of your own ignorance.
I am always amazed at the amount of support and outcry I hear on the side of graffiti when it comes up on the internet. Not that it often outweighs the people who say “hands off other people’s shit”, but the number is still much larger than I expect.
It all depends on context, imo. People should generally leave other people’s private property alone. But if it’s an ugly cinderblock wall downtown, some kind of drab piece of infrastructure, and the graffiti artist is actually making an effort to make it look good - it can be public art
Crypto fascists are fascists who hide their true politics. Lemmy.world admins tried really hard to avoid defederating with a Nazi instance, pre-emptively defederated from a leftist one, and collaborated with an out fascist to ban db0’s piracy forum.
They’re fascists or they collaborate with them, which means they’re fascists.
Can we stop this "Introvert" BS? An "introvert" is someone who will tend to keep their thoughts to themselves. Nothing more. This "the extroverts are the sports guys and the introverts are the intellectuals" is completely made up and people will not like you more or less depending on wether you wear your heart on your tongue or not.
Extraversion tends to be manifested in outgoing, talkative, energetic behavior, whereas introversion is manifested in more reflective and reserved behavior.
Guess what kind of activities the average outgoing and energetic teenager will pick to indulge in compared to the more reflective and reserved teenager. Sports.
This is exactly the kind of made up division I'm talking about. There is no such thing as "someone who 'emotionally recharges X or Y way'".
First of all: Why exactly would Wikipedia - edited by thousands - be wrong if the way you put is "what they are defined as"? Wouldn't people have written Wikipedia that way then?
Next, there is no such thing as "emotionally recharge". Our "emotions" aren't a battery. Also, there is "recharging process" or anything. Generally speaking: Activities that make us happy in that very moment "recharge" our batteries. Parents of young children will confirm that this not neccessarily a task that gives you respite, but can be the most exhausting thing ever, still you'll come out of it with more energy than before.
And we all - everyone! Yes, you too! - have varying ways of doing that. Sometimes, we'll want to be around others and it'll do us good, sometimes we want to be alone and it'll do us good. While all people will have tendencies towards one way or another, no one has a defined "recharging mode". No one.
And lastly: The main issue with this division into "introverts" and "extroverts" is not that it's impossible to divide people by that line. You can, as you can with many, many other lines one could draw. The issue is that people offhandedly attribute all kinds of stuff to this division. All of a sudden, extroverts are "loud" and "confident" and "energetic" and "sports guys". Even IF we applied your definition... how would the way someone wants to take a break in lead to them being even one of those things? It's just not logical.
I mean, as a nerd with no interest in prom, it wasn’t all bad. My hs has us still do graduation almost as normal (masks and spacing, ofc), with the only major difference being that it was split across multiple days so we could fit everyone on the front lawn.
The fact that they had to do the speeches six times was the only reason I was slightly glad to have missed out on being valedictorian/salutorian
pretty boring tbh. most of it was the same, just with masks on, and classes online. thankfully, mu part of australia was mostly unaffected by covid, so final WACE exams were basically the same. the big send off was already done before hand
Your bank will implement WEI API. Facebook will too, same as Gmail or Youtube. Any browser that does not support or has removed the WEI API will not be able to display or use any of those websites. It’s the same with Netflix or Spotify - if you try to use it in a more privacy-centered browser, it simply does not work - because it those browsers do not support EME API (which is a DRM that was implemented few years ago, but for media). Firefox was against it, by the way. Firefox also quickly backed down and implemented it anyway once it rolled out, because “We ArE FoRcEd tO Do It”, due to their already dwindling marketshare and people complaining and switching to other browsers because their shit ain’t working on Firefox.
Everyone keeps saying “I will never use a browser that does support WEI!”, but somehow it feels like they don’t really realize that their internet will simply stop working for most of the content they consume, since there’s no reason for Google or Facebook to not use this opportunity to forcefeed more ads to people.
That’s fine I can replace or not use all those services and I would LOVE to see my bank try it I would love to see them try it in the EU too. These is blatant monopolistic moves and I will not change my browser or OS for WEI.
You really don’t realize how stupid that take is? If Google manages to establish this all major browsers will have follow and a single complain less won’t change that…
Good point, there are few people as unlikable than redditors, who are so fragile that they need to disparage other people with words like “stupid,” or tell other people they’re “too sensitive.”
On that note, in my experience, 100% of those who call others too sensitive are colosally bad, unempathetic humans.
I don't know. I just had a discussion where someone told me it'd unrealistic to give up YouTube for the alternatives and yadda yadda yadda. It bears reminding that not everyone is as privacy-minded and make up nowhere near a majority. Not caring what happens because you aren't using chromium is dangerous. It's still about you and it's still going to affect you.
It’s not that I don’t care. I intend to do whatever I can to help prevent it. But at the end of the day, if people keep supporting platforms like YouTube, then I see the enshittification of the internet as inevitable. We’re literally welcoming it by doing so.
Been there, done that. Spoiler alert, it ends with even more people switching to chromium, Mozilla crying that it’s deeply concerned with and extremely opposing WEI and will work on figuring out a better solution, because WEI is not what Open Web should be, but is being forced to implement it, because people are switching to other browsers because their shit ain’t working.
With most competing browsers and the content industry embracing the W3C EME WEI specification, Mozilla has little choice but to implement EME WEI as well so our users can continue to access all content they want to enjoy.
