What cope. I still run into countless compatibility issues which bars Linux from daily use for me. Stop trying to downplay proton compatibility, it just makes your arguments appear disingenuous.

I would fully switch over to Linux in a heartbeat if there was no compatibility problems.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Eh, works fine for me. I have a lot of games to choose from, so I’m really not lacking on selection.

That said, I totally get it if it doesn’t work for the things you need. Use what works. Linux works better for me than Windows, so it’s what I use.

loxdogs ,

Even if it had full comparability, you won’t have switched to linux. You don’t need reasons to do it, except your own wish

caustictrap ,

Some game updates just break proton compatibility.

off_apparition ,

Which games? I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a game that didn’t run with Proton out of the box.

KpntAutismus ,

first, file a report. so devs are aware of your problem.

second, i feel you. i’m in the same situation. if i switch to linux right now, my stream deck will lose features and i probably on’t be able to use my steering wheel anymore. plus i really struggled to install fusion360.

Fluba , in Trying Linux gaming & never looking back. Proton is amazing.

Yesterday I went and got a pcie nvme adapter (my two motherboard slots are taken up by windows+gaming drive). Added in a 2TB to the adapter and installed Garuda linux - based on Arch.

So far it has been great. A couple little things popped up, like adding panels to the other two side monitors. But quick searches online and everything has been working very smoothly. I even put chrome on for work stuff so I don’t have to use the company-given laptop. – Side note, if anyone knows of a way to container that chrome install so work stuff is super separate, please share. –

Like another comment mentioned, some games won’t work either because of anti-cheat that isn’t enabled for linux, or just not good proton support. But for the most part I can still play 90% of the games I normally do: DRG, CS2, Darktide, battlebit, etc. Hopefully the times I need to reboot into windows are rare, because this has been a great experience. Way better than years ago when I tried to make the switch but gaming support just wasn’t where I needed it.

Yinchie , in "I would like to switch to Linux, but it's just not good for gaming"

Steamdeck = Linus.

Kittenstix ,

Well… Yes but, the year in gaming circle graph differentiates between steamdeck and Linux, i only know because my pc runs only Linux.

Welcome to the club!

The only game I can’t play is rocket league.

Have you tried it on Heroic Games Launcher yet? I play RL from time to time with a buddy, and both of us have gotten it to work without any notable issues via Heroic.

SquirtleHermit , in "I would like to switch to Linux, but it's just not good for gaming"

Linux Gamers - “Sure am stoked that gaming on Linux has gotten so good, finally don’t feel like I need to keep Windows”

Randos - “Wow, such copium! It didnt work for my specific use case! Linux users are so obnoxious!”

neatchee ,

If your quote was the title of this post then the “randos” wouldn’t show up. But it’s not. 🤷

SquirtleHermit ,

Idk man, I get how you could read the title as confrontational, but every pro Linux post has these “randos”. Haters gonna hate. 🤷‍♂️

nargacu83 , in Trying to narrow down an extremely infuriating issue with Mesa on an AMD GPU

RX6600 on arch. It was kinda a nightmare a few weeks ago ngl. The whole screen freeze, lost the video signal then gives false hopes by returning the signal to the screen but still freezed requiring a hard reset.

  • I crashed in the middle of a game.
  • I crashed on the desktop when i just started the session.
  • I crashed every time i tried to open blender 4.0 because i enabled the HIP option, some rocm or mesa had dependencies issues or something, i ended up installing the flakpak.
  • I was blown away when i discovered that launching LibreOffice made me crash, ended up using the flatpak too.

I made a new fresh install of arch on a different drive and did some quick tests, the issue was still here.

I’m not having those frequent freezes anymore so there’s that. Don’t know what’s so special about these cards but holy moly that’s my first time having so many issues with a graphics card.

stargazer4416 , in Trying Linux gaming & never looking back. Proton is amazing.

I tried a couple of times already, but always feel it’s not quite ready yet… Games not starting or running slower, etc. Running latest Ubuntu, Wayland and new PC with an RTX4060ti. What am I doing wrong?

Mereo ,

Nvidia and Wayland are a bad combination (Nvidia’s Wayland support is to blame). Try the latest 545 drivers.

BrownianMotion , in "I would like to switch to Linux, but it's just not good for gaming"

Kernel Level Anti-Cheat. If you don’t understand that, then you don’t know if Linux is good or bad for “gaming”.

Basically everything you want to play on Linux, that is not supported by the anti-cheat kernel is screwed.

“Steam offers all these game to play on Linux” - yes, but I played them all 20 years ago.

Try playing something like Genshin Impact. You cannot, the anticheat is Windows only. (PS and consoles, it relies on anticheat mech’s from the HW). They don’t offer a Linux version - so you are screwed.

Does it have EAC or Battleeye? You are shit out of luck.

The Linux Desktop is ready for primetime, but not for gaming. You need a windows boot for gaming, unless you are playing Half-Life…

blind3rdeye ,

Wait, you’re saying you like Windows specifically so that you can give miscellaneous companies the highest level of privileged access to your computer, a power which they say they want to use to check that you aren’t cheating. That’s the reason you want to use Windows?

BrownianMotion ,
@BrownianMotion@lemmy.world avatar

No, you total bell end.

I support and do everything in Linux, and I can. But I cannot play games I want to play. I have to use windows to play what I want to play, because companies that make games do not support Linux.

How fucking retarded are you?

Never mind, you are probably just another aimbot using n00b in some old game that still runs on Linux, that no one cares about anymore.

blind3rdeye ,

Holy smokes man. Did you learn your social skills from those same multiplayer games you are talking about?

hschen ,
@hschen@sopuli.xyz avatar

Genshin does work in linux since a few months ago from what i heard

jack ,

You’re right about kernel-level anticheat like Vanguard not working, but there is EAC support for Linux; see Apex Legends.

AVincentInSpace , in "I would like to switch to Linux, but it's just not good for gaming"

mmmm call me back when cyberpunk 2077 can hold a stable 30FPS at 1440p on steam deck settings on my laptop’s 3070Ti.

BabyVi ,

Cyberpunk runs astonishingly well on my desktop at the same resolution with an AMD 5700XT, maybe its the Nvidia drivers causing issues.

AVincentInSpace ,

Linux users stopping reading a post asking for help and reaching for the downvote button as soon as they see the word Nvidia. Nice to see some things don’t change.

Daefsdeda ,

Maybe people thought you were comparing steam deck to your laptop (which is of course a unfair comparison) cause that is how I read it at first.

AVincentInSpace ,

i am and my laptop is losing

KpntAutismus ,

from what i know, you can either install official nvidia drivers or ones the community wrote.

sounds like they’re using community drivers. because they typically don’t perform very well.

AVincentInSpace ,

no i’m using the proprietary drivers

AlexWIWA , in "I would like to switch to Linux, but it's just not good for gaming"

I mostly play old games that struggle even in windows sadly. I’ll probably need a windows machine or VM until I die.

KpntAutismus ,

don’t use linux myself, but i’ve heard wine has great backward compatibility with older games.

but you probably tried installing them yourself, so…

AlexWIWA ,

Yeah the C&C games don’t run too well in it sadly. Don’t know why someone down voted you, you’re just trying to help :/

adept , in Trying Linux gaming & never looking back. Proton is amazing.

For Rocket league you need to manually enable proton under properties.

Its running without problems for me now

Linux gaming all the way! “Just tried a VR game on someone else’s machine.” image

Same here! We 100% Linux people don’t get a chart, but we know exactly where we stand.

I switched 2 weeks ago, 12% of my years playtime is on Linux now. Should I be concerned about how active I am?

Cirk2 , in 2022 vs 2023
@Cirk2@programming.dev avatar

Still a bit irritated by defining VR as a platform on the same level as Linux or Windows, but whatever.

20222023

naticus ,

I kinda think they did that because of the Quest since what do you call that if you’re only playing games installed in the headset, not using Quest Link?

Cirk2 ,
@Cirk2@programming.dev avatar

You can run steam games on the quest (without link)? I thought it was locked to the occulus store.

naticus ,

Sorry, no I didn’t mean it could play Steam games without Link. I was just saying that there is precedent for calling it a platform of its own because of how Quest works. Sure, on Steam it’s going to be based on the OS running it, but VR is a more unique experience than the OS being the platform.
