Nvidia is a problem on all platforms. The new open driver sort of alleviates a tiny bit of the pain, but not much when looking at how perfect AMD just runs everywhere.
I set the filter in that link to 300mm, which is a bit less than 12". If you actually have 310mm to work with, it would show more options including some from PowerColor, who made the card I’m using and am happy with.
I suggest checking each model’s power jack positions as well. You don’t want to buy a card that barely fits only to find that there’s no room left for the power cables.
PCPartPicker can filter for card length (in millimeters as opposed to inches, but still) and that should help with narrowing down your choices. Most GPUs have some variant that’s shorter in length, but they might just charge a bit of a premium for it.
All the tiny cards I’ve seen have usually been the lower end/entry level variants, not premium.
Like my card, 6700 Fighter from PowerColor. Absolutely tiny, both in length, width and in weight compared to some past cards i’ve had. it doesnt even approach the edge of the mobo.
If it’s that kind of flickering on KDE 6.X on Wayland that forced me to temporarily move back to Cinnamon on X to play Elden Ring again, it could be related to KDE enabling Explicit Sync by default and the NVidia drivers < 555 that don’t support it.
It was only flickering, the framerate was fine.
After I installed the 555 driver from the repository, the flickering in KDE on Wayland was gone.
Same thing happens to me with an Xbox controller plugged into my PC with a USB cable. If it goes to sleep, I need to restart the game to use it again. And sometimes it suddenly stops working and sends a constant “analog stick down” command until I unplug it (which means I can’t use it anymore lol)
I don't get flickering from adaptive sync but my screen just goes black for a couple seconds every now and then when it is enabled, usually when playing. No idea why or if Windows would have the same issue.
What kind pf GPU does she have? What drivers are installed? Also, I get that ultramarine is supposed to be “easy fedora” but it’s certainly a lesser used distro, there might be some quirks at play. The ultimate mom dad or grandma distro is Linux Mint, might be worth trying it out to see if it has the same issue or not.
It’s a laptop, so no GPU installed. Turns out I’m a beeg dum stoopid, apparently my mom’s laptop comes with nvidia graphics. Turns out I’m an even beeger dumer stoopider, her computer shows no signs of having anything Nvidia inside it.

I was considering installing Mint for her, but decided against it because of the recent unverified flatpak controversy (she unfortunately still uses chrome, and I would rather have her distro manage all her updates for her); but I think I might install Mint on an external hard drive just to quickly see if any of her issues persist.
Are you sure about that? Dell’s website says the laptop comes with Nvidia graphics. If that’s the case, GPU drivers should be updated to version 555 to resolve flickering.
Many laptops have either discrete or integrated GPUs.
The command inxi -G should list display drivers. If you don’t have inxi installed, sudo dnf install inxi.
Google chrome from rpm fusion non-free repo is fine, google chrome flatpak is fine Google chrome .deb package is fine on mint. There’s no controversy’s about browsers worth basing your distro choice on. Better yet, export her shit to Firefox and tell her she’s using that now.

You could lookup some chromium based and de-googled browser. It's while ago so i cannot come up with names, but I can remember there were some. @Fecundpossum
I think the issue is how the games are programmed. Some games check which controllers are plugged in only at start and some do regular checks during runtime.
SteamOS isnt really open given its got a whole bunch of unreleased patched open source software (probably in violation of Foss licenses) but always good to have more linux friendly handhelds.
While I’ve had some nagging KDE session issues, thankfully using an xbox controller has thus far been a great experience for me in Bazzite. On Windows I had to replug my dongle after every. single. freaking. reboot.
