[Question] Display Management on tiling wm

BSPWM, laptop has 1920x1080 resolution, external screen has 1680x1050. xrandr --output DP-1 1680x1050 cuts image, if I change resolution to 1920x1080, I get “full” image, but quality is just bad. I have another machine with XFCE, it’s display utility does the trick and I wonder can I achieve smth similar on BSPWM with some...

WM/DE recommendation request: able to have i3-like control, but friendly enough for an ex-windows user

I’ve been using i3wm for long enough that i now can’t go back to a user interface that requires me to use a mouse to get stuff done. However, I’m setting up an old laptop that will be used by both me and my SO for mainly media purposes, but also as my general-use computer for basic tasks. He has been using windows since...

Why do all windows react differently to xdotool resize

Yesterday I tried to layout a bunch of program windows via xdotools moveto and resize. In theory they should have been all the same size, but they came out all different, and none had the targeted size. They all had space around them. What is involved in this process? Are there invisible borders, or stuff like that?

I have seen similar tools for X11 but they do not work under Wayland for obvious reasons. I have been able to create basic macros using Python, but is there a much better way for...

Linux will continue to be a frustrating geeks-only club unless and until somebody starts getting paid to work on it

Hot take incoming. Just some thoughts I’ve been having recently as I experience Linux at work for several years now. To clarify, I mean Linux on the desktop as a consumer. As in, what our lord and savior Richard M. Stallman would call “GNU/Linux”; pick your favorite distro here. I’m leaving out Linux on the server,...

Grub-btrfs troubles

Hello all, I’m having some network problems on my server (Ubuntu Lunar Lobster Server Edition), namely my plex port is no longer reachable from outside the network despite it being port forwarded and allowed through ufw. A few days ago I used airvpn’s eddie gui program, and it completely wrecked my network. Caused it to be...

Workspaces / Virtual Desktops – do you use them on your laptop, desktop, or both?

About 4 years ago I got a 13.3" Thinkpad laptop to replace an old Chromebook for portable development, and installed Arch + i3 on it (btw). After a bit of ricing the configs, it started feeling really homey. I love using workspaces here! They feel perfectly suited for laptop screens which have minimal space, allowing me to keep...
