I want to know your opinions on the best distro that is convenient for laptops. Main reason is I want to really optimize hardware performance and more specifically battery life for my University classes. I also want to try a tiling manager as they seem perfect for laptops....
I purchased a second hand ThinkPad from an ebay outlet. When it arrived I wiped windows 10 from it and installed ubuntu with no issues. It runs perfect without any weird fixes needed. However, after just checking the bios to see if I could change some settings, I realised it has a supervisor password....
I know the “best linux for gaming” is probably one of the most common questions, but I have heard that some distro can have issues with some hardware, I have a crappy old PC with an integrated radeon R7, which distro would you recommend?
My day job involves a fair bit of coding and I do most of the stuff in the terminal. But there is one sore spot that still bugs me to this day. All terminal emulators I’ve used don’t have complex text layout support....

Hi, I need a video upscaling solution to enhance some old family videos. As much as I’d love to use a FOSS program, I can’t find anything that comes close to Topaz Video AI....
When trying to install games on an ext4 external drive I get a disk write error from steam. Whenever I reset the permissions on the drive to both read and write, not just read, steam immediately reverts that whenever it’s opened.
My computer over the last week has (after using the computer for a few hours) shown very high ram usage, around 50 - 60% out of 32GB, even though nothing in htop appears to be the culprit with the highest consumer being Firefox at 1.6% ram, even in a tty, around half of my ram is being used up even though no process shows over...
I have a GeForce 210 GPU on an EndeavourOS computer. I use Noveau drivers, but some apps like Blender have a broken user interface, and KDE acts weird sometimes. I tried installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers following the Archlinux wiki, but I did not have any display output at all. I also tried running the NVIDIA driver...
I run Mylar on my Xubuntu server to manage my comic collection. I found out recently that there’s a tool that can convert the embedded .jpgs to .webp to save space, but it only works on cbz files and not cbr (zipped vs rar for those who don’t know). I wanted to convert all of my cbr to cbz so that I could run the tool on all...
I was daily driving Pop_OS before my System76 finally gave it up. I mostly enjoyed the experience, but when my laptop gave it up, I had to run to a big box store and grab a replacement asap. I’m now riding an HP envy touch screen fliptop and (:puke:) windows 11....
I use a Windows and Arch dualboot, but I’m looking to escape Microsoft. I’ve heard good things about both Fedora and Pop!_OS. I’m your average Arch user; I play video games and code. Are Windows VMs suitable for games like Call of Duty on such distros ?
I used to use Sway and I found tiling to be useful only when using multiple terminals. Tmux allows me to have tiling functionalities for terminals while having a full desktop environment for all other applications.
Recently I stumbled over an article, about how to customize your shell prompt. What really surprised me, is that it lacked one of the most basic tips I learned nearly 20 years back: Always display a timestamp in the prompt, to be able to check how long a process is running or when it ended. (Don’t need it daily, but every so...
What solutions out there can package software in the native package format? I only found fpm (effing package management) and OBS (Open Build Service) so far....
