Oracle: Keep Linux Open and Free—We Can’t Afford Not To

Shots fired by Oracle. I trust them about as much as I have a chance of sailing with Larry Ellison (also, ever notice how he looks like a Bond villain?), but I could see their arguments swaying at least a few folks who are looking for a corporate-backed enterprise distro that has the resources and incentive to keep up. Maybe at some point some of their SRPMs even end up assisting Rocky or Alma.

It’s a sad day when Oracle in word and deed is being more friendly to the community than Red Hat (“We do not have subscription agreements that interfere with a subscriber’s rights to redistribute Oracle Linux”).

winterayars ,

Oracle saying to keep Linux free is like an arsonist talking about fire safety (after they burned your house down). The fact that they can say that shit with a straight face is shameful. What a fucking world we’ve found ourselves in.

timbuck2themoon ,

Anyone with any experience with Oracle hates Oracle.

Fuck them and the horse they rode in on.

lmao, OK Oracle…

Laser ,

For Oracle, the position makes sense. They want to commoditize around their own stack / products, which is enterprise software. They profit from a free operating system below that. So while I’d say this statement is more than just PR, it can be dismissed as it isn’t honest. I’ll believe it when they open source their core products (like Oracle DB) and allow rebuilds. Until then, they can go fuck themselves

Mane25 ,

Yeah, there’s no company I would trust less than Oracle, and I wouldn’t have even believed that even they would stoop so low to offer this criticism given their own history. My memory is longer than a few years, Red Hat is a company that has a history of acquiring other companies for the purpose of open-sourcing its codebase. Oracle has a history of ruining anything open source that it acquires.

redcalcium ,

Finally, to IBM, here’s a big idea for you. You say that you don’t want to pay all those RHEL developers? Here’s how you can save money: just pull from us. Become a downstream distributor of Oracle Linux. We will happily take on the burden.

Oh shit, Oracle and IBM are going to duke it out. Where is my popcorn?

IBM just doesn’t care, corpos are still going to use RHEL just the same tomorrow as they did yesterday. Oracle is in the position to throw shade simply because they don’t have market share with Oracle Linux to toe-to-toe with RHEL. If they did, they wouldn’t be giving away a free lunch.

Very persuading coming from a company where half its employees are lawyers.

The trend of one shitty corporation attempting some PR bullshit and market-taking after the previous shitty corporation makes a really idiotic move doesn’t stop with Meta going for Twitter’s throat, doesn’t it?

Oracle trying to spin up some moral high ground over RedHat is hysterically bad. They’d do better staying quiet.

Nice try Oracle, it’s not like we forgot all the shit you’ve pulled though.

MashingBundle ,

So much talk, nothing to back it up. Blatant PR move.

Molecular0079 ,

Yeah, Oracle’s much worse than Redhat historically with regards to open source, no thanks.

Koma52 ,
@Koma52@lemmy.world avatar

For me it sounds like more like a PR move. It sounds like they just want people to adopt Oracle Linux because now it’s the good thing and when they’ll have the chance they’ll do the same thing. Not necessarily exactly what Red Hat (and IBM) did but something that won’t benefit the community but them. But maybe this is just my superstition or something and it won’t come to this. I hope it won’t come to this but I doubt it

That sounds a lot like the pot calling the kettle black. Oracle is nothing but a bunch of stark hypocrites. They have absolutely nothing to say on the subject matter of FOSS and open and fair competition. This is just peak corporatism. Oracle is the king of proprietary. They’ve done NOTHING to contribute to open source. They take, take, take!

negativenull ,
@negativenull@negativenull.com avatar

Not only do they do nothing for open source, they actively kill open source projects after aquiring them.

More like the lump of fired old dung calling the kettle black. I wouldn’t touch anything Oracle with a ten mile pile if I didn’t have to.

Yeah web frontend and some apps are still screwed up on my instance from the XSS hack and the app I can get to work doesn’t supporting editing posts yet. :(

Jesus Christ it reads like a cocky hacker thread.

Kinda love it
