phx , in Need a good gaming mouse that is Linux compatible. Any suggestions?

Corsair Dark Core RGB has worked pretty nicely for me. I use it on two different devices: one with dongle and the other Bluetooth

I’d say aliases and functions are your friends here.

Solemn , in Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?

Don’t get an HP. Had one for work that I had to change to Ubuntu, and I couldn’t find any compatible WiFi drivers somehow.

PurrJPro OP ,

YEAH it sucks when drivers for hardware aren’t Linux compatible (my current drawing tablet doesn’t support it… RIP). I’ll be sure 2 head ur warning about HP!

padook OP , in Graphics Card Help

Thank you all for the input.

If I was looking for a top of the line card I would dig in and learn everything there is to know about graphics cards to make an informed decision. When it comes to buying a run of the mill card, its hard to get that excited!

Not sure what I’ll buy yet, but you’ve pointed out what I need to look for. Thanks!

My impression was that with this: github.com/openrazer/openrazer Razer support on Linux is quite good?

Not for Mice…but if looking at controllers or joysticks:

Checkout this nifty list of udev rules:

Supported Devices

  • gitlab.com/jntesteves/game-devices-udev/

ReadME/Installation:

When one installs their package manager version of steam, steam-devices usually takes care of controllers for the system.

But if say, you are on immutable like Silverblue or Kinoite and use the Steam Flatpak, then udev rules are not included by steam.

this is only limited to rgb and dpi for mice, due to Razers license restriction prohibiting reverse engineering.

.zsh aliases to bash functions.

Thanks for the list though, gonna take a look at a few!

jsveiga , in Keeping and running frequently used commands

I use vi as the command line editor, so fetching history commands is quick:

ESC /searchstring

But if it’s something really frequent or may benefit from parameters, I usually throw a perl or bash script in /usr/local/bin.

Korkki , in [Suggestions] Good distros for gaming

Some rolling release might be good for driver updates, so arc si good for that or manjaro for easier use, but I guess it doesn’t really matter if hardware isn’t the cutting edge and even like mint might do and it might be a bit more stable.

Trebach ,

I have had instability problems with Manjaro. It's basically still Arch but with the sharp edges rounded off and a fresh coat of paint.

I recommend Mint over either Manjaro or Arch.

zikk_transport2 , in would you recommend debian testing for a daily driver?

Try Arch Linux. First setup in VM, then on your computer. Been ~8 years on it. Tried to distrohop multiple times - still going back to it.

Plasma is awesome DE which requires bare minimum setup. plasma package pulls basically everything - bluetooth, pipewire, sddm and so on. Then you just have to enable sddm/bluetooth services are you are done.

Fixing broken system is also very easy. :) Just try, don’t be shy!

rglullis , in Purism found a way to make its Linux phone even more expensive: meet the $2,199 Liberty Phone - Liliputing
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

I get it that they need to find a way to fund their R&D team.

I get that there is also some people willing to pay top-dollar for some specific features which can not be had on commodity phones Linux-based, fully assembled in the US, etc. Which is going to be impossible to fulfill at scale.

What I don’t get is: why can’t they offer something that makes this explicit? I for one have no interest in a $2k phone, but I would gladly give them $50 per month and in exchange I’d get the right to participate in some periodic (monthly, quarterly, yearly?) dutch-style auction when they had a new update to their phone. Perhaps a percentage of the money that I had given could be used to pay for the device, etc.

code , in Flatpak vs Snap vs Native Packages

I hat snap cause its a pita to freeze or not update some things. Also i dont like that snapcraft is run solely by canonical (sp?)

solstice , in The year of Linux on the desktop is closer. Linux reaches 3% of desktops

I used to have strong opinions on my OS. Then I got a job and all I use is outlook and excel. Now I don’t care about my operating system. I’m not even sure which version of windows I’m running without checking. 10 I guess?

UntouchedWagons , in Anyone else starting to favor Flatpak over native packages?
@UntouchedWagons@lemmy.ca avatar

I prefer containers for docker/kubernetes but not on my PC.
