[Question] TV consumption SBC's

A few years ago I turned a pine64 rock64 SBC into a kodi box, and saw immediate performance improvement over the stock Roku chip on my TCL TV when streaming from SMB. As always “better” becomes… ehhhhh I want more. I want to stick with an SBC because of power consumption on a box that I’m going to leave running 24/7. So...

I didn’t mean to imply that Services actually broke. Only that they didn’t come back after a reboot. A clean reboot may have caused some of the same issues because, I’m learning as I go. Some services are restarted by systemctl, some by cron, some…manual. This is certainly a wake up call that I need standardize and simplify the way the services are started.

This thought came to me this morning. I have 4 machines both because the BEAST grows organically, and because we’re always trying to avoid that single point of failure. Then a scenario comes along that makes you question your whole way of thinking, diversifying may actually create more problems

I could have the best self hosted setup… living in a van, down by the river! https://feddit.nl/pictrs/image/50ed2716-bdba-4376-8cfa-7d9d512eb2ae.png

Your problem may differ from mine, but whenever I’ve been greeted with the command line in grub the solution has actually been in bios. I’ll leave you with my notes, which are a bit snarky after spending a lot of time trying to figure out hot to repair grub, when the solution was 3 clicks in bios:

“Inspiron won’t boot

Goes to the grub command prompt

Don’t fuck with that thing

Restart, F2 to get into bios

Change boot sequence to start the SSD first, not ubuntu

Reboot, itll do it a couple times, but should boot right into normal grub”

I hope your solution is the same

Tailscale/ PiHole

I’ve been slowly moving access to my Self hosted services from multiple WireGuard VPN connections over to tailscale for that nice flat network feel. One thing that was holding me back from the switch was that I liked vpn’ing my internet traffic from my phone and laptop back to my network and into the PiHole to avoid...

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

I’m sorry, what?..Oh, all I heard was that my linux home server is going to be running on new hardware in about a year and a half when all these used computers go on sale. 😁

Service for letter/PDF archival

I’m looking for a service I could install to archive a huge pile of letters, preferably in PDF form, to a database. I’m living in a country where paper is still king, and digital services are either non-existent, or loathed (Germany). My current situation is that I have a mailbox with lots of PDFs all over the place, but...

I’ve been pretty happy with paperless-ngx, it should tick all your boxes

Recommendations for OS on a rpi 4B (outside of RaspPiOS)

Quickly wondering what people recommend as OS for a rpi model 4b, outside of the RaspPiOS ofc. I want to use the RPI for all networking related stuff (dont worry its not using an sd-card). So PiHole, and I’ll also want to use it as my exit-node out of my Tailnet. I will also run ProtonVPN on it so that all my devices...

Dietpi is a nice little distro, especially when running it minimal without a GUI. Its added toolkits make farting around on the command line more comfortable

Thank you all for the input.

If I was looking for a top of the line card I would dig in and learn everything there is to know about graphics cards to make an informed decision. When it comes to buying a run of the mill card, its hard to get that excited!

Not sure what I’ll buy yet, but you’ve pointed out what I need to look for. Thanks!
