One word: Recall

Guenther_Amanita , in [Bazzite] Important announcement regarding system updates [Action needed] - FYI

Wow! Another reason to keep supporting uBlue. That’s how leadership is supposed to be. He did something wrong and instantly apologizes deeply and gives us a simple solution. I’m very proud and my trust is strengthened, thanks!

I would like to share the fixing script here, but don’t feel comfortable anyone executing something I copy-pasted because of security. Go and read the letter yourself, it will take literally one minute.

Sentau ,

Yeah. Makes me love jorge and team maintaining ublue even more.

cflewis ,

When I oopsie in server-side software, I roll it back, hopefully users never see it. When you oopsie client-side software it’s far more likely that users see it and resolution takes order days, not order minutes.

As I am a coward, I only work server-side 🙃

joe , in Why do you still hate Windows?

Many government agencies and businesses are too dependent on Windows and other Microsoft products. The dependence on a few huge American corporations is problematic especially for organizations outside the US.

I don’t hate Windows but I see it as a political problem.

I’ll stick with doas

null ,

doass

PoorPocketsMcNewHold ,

Speaking of doas, is there any advantage of using it when… sudo is still available to be used? I agree that most of the stuff we require to use doesn’t need all the options sudo as, but if it is for the sake of security, maintenance, and stability… is there any reason to use doas ON TOP of the already setup sudo or su? In the past, I even tried to just apply a simple alias to replace sudo with doas, but numerous scripts and programs when trying to request explicit super-user permissions, just didn’t know what to do with doas as expected, so this ain’t it.

I’ve only found one software like that and it’s tipi, and it’s kinda dumb for a software to require such a easily replacable software. Also how openbsd users are supposed to do ? Having both doas and sudo on their machine which is unnecessary bloat ?

I like that its configuration file is very very simple.

Thanks! Really helpful!

Rogue ,

This is a good tip but is there not a more reliable way for the issue to be communicated to users? I suspect many people are going to be stuck on the pre-error version of Bluefin, unaware that updating is broken.

unskilled5117 , (edited )

It has been asked on the forum. Idk if they will consider implementing some type of notification for critical issues on the OS itself. Edit: they are working on a solution

TheBigBrother , in Is it possible to replace the wifi card on a Macbook pro 11,2 (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)? If so, are there any compatible wifi cards with open source drivers for Linux?

How about an USB WiFi adapter?

HarriPotero , in Why do you still hate Windows?

I wouldn’t say I hate Windows. I’ve had Windows 2.0 through NT 4.0 installed, but it was more of an application that I rarely started because it usually just interfered with my MS-DOS programs. DESQview was a much preferable option, as it had true multitasking (yes, so did NT 4.0 - but it broke a lot of things).

I dual booted DOS and Linux for a couple of years, but DOS box was good enough in 1997 that I rarely had to boot DOS, so I’ve been Linux only for a couple of decades.

Sounds like I should give Windows another try.

liliumstar ,

You should write a post if you do. Would be funny!

I had a terrible time getting wifi working on my Macbook Pro from about the same year. 2012, I think. It semi-worked but was horrifically unreliable and slow.

In the end I just got a tiny USB wifi dongle and plugged it in, rather than using the internal wifi card.

ftbd , in Why do you still hate Windows?

It just… lacks features? I couldn’t use ZFS or Btrfs, FDE requires third-party software (veracrypt) and lots of other things that I see as standard system utilities (think ssh, git etc.) are not available on a fresh install. And then you’re supposed to download and install .exe files from the internet? Since microsoft controls what goes in the windows store, that could provide the same experience as your distro’s repositories. But again, most things you want aren’t there, and you can’t even trust the things that are there. For some reason, a billion dollar company cannot curate a software repository of the same quality as the ones maintained by unpaid volunteers in the Linux world.

So yeah, I think it’s just not there yet. Maybe in a few years windows will be a viable alternative for desktop systems.

ReversalHatchery ,

There’s bitlocker, I think it was added in 7 or Vista. What do you mean?
But other than that, I would rather use VC too.

standard system utilities (think ssh, git etc.) are not available on a fresh install

Hmm, depends. It has a built in openssh client and server, but the “feature” (automatically installing package) is off by default. It can be enabled at install time with the use of the standard windows image modification tools (DISM I think?)

And then you’re supposed to download and install .exe files from the internet? Since microsoft controls what goes in the windows store

I think it’s better that Microsoft does not have that much control over software distribution.

But again, most things you want aren’t there, and you can’t even trust the things that are there.

Of course you can’t, nobody can tell by looking at the store page if it was modified by anyone, including Microsoft.
The amazon app store for android explicitely tells that they are adding tracking code to every uploaded app, and to make this possible they replace the digital signature of apps uploaded. Google with the play store does not tell anything like this afaik, but for a few years now it also basically compromised the digital signatures of developers, by requiring the private keys to be mandatorily handed in for continued app updates.
I don’t trust that these companies that already rely on mass surveillance as a revenue stream, they won’t add tracking code to apps unauthorized by the devs. If not right now, it will happen in the future.

For some reason, a billion dollar company cannot curate a software repository of the same quality as the ones maintained by unpaid volunteers in the Linux world.

Besides quality, I think open source distro’s repository and it’s packagers are largely more trustable. They are not motivated financially to modify the packages in unwanted (by the user) ways, and they are transparent.

So yeah, I think it’s just not there yet. Maybe in a few years windows will be a viable alternative for desktop systems.

I think they are drifting farther and farther away.
It was an option. But the shitshow of 11… thanks that’s too much. I’m not installing that for anyone. And 10 is soon end of life…

Sina , in [Bazzite] Important announcement regarding system updates [Action needed] - FYI

I don’t blame the guy for being human and it’s free software etc, but this is reality bad optics for immutable distros. If my nephew and grandma are going to need manual interventions like this one, then might as well use a less restrictive system. The promise of seamless and easy updates are the main draw for me.

It would be much appreciated if UniBlue made the update process more robust and more resistant to such mistakes.

(also curl piped into sudo bash is way more common than it should be)

boredsquirrel ,
@boredsquirrel@slrpnk.net avatar

They messed up the signing on the server side.

They are using all non-stable technology. The Github action and cosign may be normal, but Fedora doesnt release their container images (even though they are the ones that uBlue consumes).

The updating mechanism is fine, this is a security measurement. If the signing failed, it shouldnt update as this could mean malware.

GregorGizeh ,

To be fair, the blog post details how they plan on avoiding such an issue in the future

Lot of great answers. Must save post for Linux newbies. If you play native linix games their saves will most probably in /.local/share/ or /.config. If you use repacks like jc141 they have their own prefix in /games/jc141/.

IsoKiero , in Linux during the mid to late 90s (Windows 95 and 98 era)

There’s already a ton of great examples which I can relate (I’ve been using linux since 1998 or 99) but maybe the biggest difference today, apart from that everything is SO MUCH EASIER now, is that the internet wasn’t really the thing it is today. Specially the bandwidth. It took hours and hours over the phone line to download anything, on a good day you could get 100MB just under 4 hours. Of course things were a lot smaller too back then, but it still took ages and I’m pretty sure I now have more bandwidth on my home connection than most of the local universities had back in the 90s.
