mlg , in How can I easily and conveniently transfer files wirelessly between my linux computer and android phone?
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Syncthing for automated syncing (highly reccomend)

github.com/schollz/croc for quick and lazy file sends (auto nat & proxy included)

sftp get from phone if it’s like one thing (various ssh/sftp apps on gplay and fdroid)

xavier666 ,

Solid explorer on my phone. Nautilus or any file manager on PC.

sftp each one from the other. Add the connection as a favourite. File transfer becomes a drag and drop thing. Bonus points if you create a static IP for each device.

Now it’s on Windows XP that runs quite well but doesn’t support modern SSL certificates so it can’t browse the internet (idk how to fix it ok?).

Yes there are modernized versions of Windows XP with updated certificates and whatnot.

The only thing I remember is that it’s not i686 so 99% of modern 32 bit distros don’t work on it (stuck right after grub).

Debian has images for i386: cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/i386/

But… frankly the power consumption of that thing will be just crazy. Take for example this example, a more modern Pentium D vs a Pi:

Mr. Anderson, Thank you for your analysis/work and well written treatise, on PID 0. I enjoyed learning more about Linux & Unix and a bit of history thereof as well.

tl;dr:

<span style="color:#323232;">dnf list installed > $anydir/meow
</span>

On new computer, with fedora installed and the meow file;

<span style="color:#323232;">dnf install $(cat $anydir/meow)
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span>

Well doesnt work on Silverblue but

<span style="color:#323232;">flatpak list --app
</span>

If you have configured Flatpaks, you may want to copy the ~/.var/app/ directories.

mayo_cider , in How can I easily and conveniently transfer files wirelessly between my linux computer and android phone?

The funniest solution I’ve found was a service that offered secure transfer of passwords between devices through their “encrypted transmission” with a password field on their website

FYI, don’t give any password to a service you aren’t using with that service

mayo_cider ,
@mayo_cider@hexbear.net avatar

For ad hoc transfers, easiest way is to pack it with 7zip (or any other compression software with proper encryption) and setting a proper password for the file

T/2 SDE!

It supports everything

evanstucker , in Editing (or running) file(s) regardless of current directory. [Cli tip]

Why not use bash-completion? The running example you gave is dangerous - you could end up running one or more of the wrong executables.

I wouldn't do this personally, but if I did, I think I'd at least pipe the results to head -n 1 to only act on the first result.

Also see: systemd-bsod. Generates QR codes, too. I think blue for userspace boot-time errors and black for kernel stuff might be nice.

I got a temporary ban from, I suspect, the only mod in here to have personally blocked me. The mod log accuses me of breaking the rules 1 & 2. Based on the timing, it aligns with my comments in this post. They neither broke the community bulleted rules (about Linux, no misinformation), nor did they break rules of 1 & 2 of lemmy.ml. There was no bigotry, no racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia nor xenophobia. TThere were no individuals disrespected. I seek clarification of how my posts broke the rules, in DM’s please. I am not seeking further ban, just clarification of how those rules cover the opinion that one editor is less than another, lacks necessary features when compared with editors more standard across POSIX compliant systems, and that relying upon its existence could lead to situations where one could be ill equipped for systems where it is not installed, due to it not being such a standard.

I post this as a comment, as I cannot seem to message the entire group of moderators for this community all together, especially where one appears to be unreachable to me… something I don’t think mods of a community should do or even be capable of if they are to carry out their duties properly.

I ask the mods (preferably the mod who took the action, since no mod username is in the modlog… that’s a separate issue) to DM me and delete this or message me here, which ever is preferred. Can’t go navigating safely in here if the alleged offense wasn’t clearly communicated and explained how it violated said rules. I’m not even sure which comment, specifically, was at issue. Right now it feels like something I said was just deeply unpopular with one or more mods, and summarily punished and random rules tossed out.

I’ll delete this in a few days if no mods respond. But clarification without further punishment would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I thought for a minute that Linux now panics when trying to play DRM’d content

TeddyKila , in Linux distro for an ancient Pentium PC

Is a cheap ARM SBC an option? You’d save like $80 per year just on power consumption, and could run a modern kernel.

boatswain , in What is PID 0?

The tl;dr from the article (which is actually worth a read):

The very short version: Unix PIDs do start at 0! PID 0 just isn’t shown to userspace through traditional APIs. PID 0 starts the kernel, then retires to a quiet life of helping a bit with process scheduling and power management. Also the entire web is mostly wrong about PID 0, because of one sentence on Wikipedia from 16 years ago.
