RiderExMachina , in Wondering if I should make multiple partitions or keep it as PopOS made it.

I personally always have a 50GB / (root) partition and then make another partition for my /home folder. That way if something goes FUBAR, I can easily reinstall without needing to migrate my data somewhere else first.

jmf , in Need Advice on Best OOTB Experience for Gaming/Programming/Media Server Rig

I used nvidia with vrr on linux for a while before getting sick of the paper cut issues. I used gnome fedora which has pretty good support for nvidia wayland, and then whenever I wanted to game I logged out and into x11 with a single monitor config, as that would allow vrr to activate. it was janky but it worked and worked well. If you are stuck with Nvidia for the foreseeable future it is the only way if you are dedicated to the linux route.

GnuLinuxDude , in Is there really no viable alternative for Photoshop on Linux?
@GnuLinuxDude@lemmy.ml avatar

I think one of the most insidious things about Photoshop is that it is a powerful, complex program. Using it is a skill. Which means that even if you think you are getting the better of Adobe by pirating their software, you are still building your own skills with their program, which is so full of features that classes can be taught about using it. In the end, that’s a win for Adobe and their proprietary software, because if you end up getting good enough to make money from that program, you will end up finding yourself in a position where you eventually pay them, or work for someone who does. This is to the detriment of any other photo editor, of course. You won’t care about how good GIMP or anything else is, much less fund it, because you won’t want to use it, because you know Photoshop.

If I had deep wallets I would love to start funding GIMP for development and rebranding. But I don’t have that kind of cash to push around :P

AnyOldName3 ,
@AnyOldName3@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve read that part of why GIMP is the way it is is because it’s meant to be a testbed for the GTK UI library, so features are added to use new UI elements as much as they are to aid photo manipulation, and in some cases it’s considered preferable to use a weird widget so it’s got a test case rather than whichever widget leads to the best UX. I don’t think I’ve ever looked for a more definitive source than a Lemmy/Reddit comment, but it’s at least consistent with my experience of using GIMP.

ExcessiveAardvark ,

Gtk started as the Gimp Tool Kit but I don’t think there has been any real connection for ages. We’re taking about 1997 or something.

moobythegoldensock , in Need Advice on Best OOTB Experience for Gaming/Programming/Media Server Rig

I’m thinking you want Arch btw. You can use archinstall to skip the tedious manual install process.

wiki_me , in Linux will continue to be a frustrating geeks-only club unless and until somebody starts getting paid to work on it

iirc there are companies working on genome, and you could always fund a specific issue using rysolv (unlike in windows and mac os where you pay them money and can only hope they will fix a problem you have)

CloverSi , in Need Advice on a Distro for Gaming/Programming and Media Server

I’d personally recommend Garuda, as that’s what I’ve mostly settled with. It’s everything I like about arch, but with lots of little changes and utilities that make it both easy to tweak and easy to just use. The built-in btrfs/snapper is particularly nice. I get the whole toy thing though, it doesn’t give off the most trustworthy vibes. But if you can look past that it’s a great distro. Take a look at the lite edition, it comes without theming and most of the bloat.

DaTingGoBrrr ,

I can recommend Garuda KDE Lite. I had some problems with pacman keyring being outdated when installing and had to set it up but other than that it works great

I’ve gone back and forth with Garuda and Endeavor. Currently I’m on Endeavor and everything is pretty good, I definitely had a better time gaming with Garuda though.

TenTypekMatus , in Wondering if I should make multiple partitions or keep it as PopOS made it.

Ditch Windows for good and never come back again to it. You can play many games on game consoles.

OrangeCorvus OP ,
@OrangeCorvus@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe for gaming but for my work that would be impossible.

TenTypekMatus , in Fedora or Pop!_OS?
@TenTypekMatus@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not based on anything mentioned above, but I’d highly recommend NixOS. You just have to copy-paste some things from the nixos.wiki (the unofficial one). You can also view my NixOS config to copy-paste some things.

TenTypekMatus , in My little brother loves the dualboot setup I installed for him. He says "It's like iOS"
@TenTypekMatus@lemmy.world avatar

Just try it with my brother. He plays a LOT of EAC-protected titles and somehow loves Wilndows 11. I tried convincing him to the penguin distros, but he’s very anti-penguin as in anti-Linux. At least I told him how to speed up Windows and he agreed, so I ran a debloat tool from CTT. But at least I convinced my grandma to switch to Linux Mint.

vegai , in Proton 8.0-3 Released With More Windows Games Running On Linux, Fixes

I’m currently unable to use Windows as a gaming OS because it keeps hard rebooting probably due to overheating. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 are very unstable.

Nobara Linux meanwhile plays everything perfectly.

BakedGoods ,

And you haven’t thought about remounting your cpu with new thermal paste or getting a cooler more fitting for your setup? This just sounds like windows being able to get more out of your hardware.

vegai ,

That would be one theory I guess, at least if I wasn’t getting the same FPS on both sides.

RogueTyre ,

Not for fixing windows but if it really is overheating, fix it before its too late. Even the cheap thermal paste would do if its not a high end one and its pretty easy to change paste anyway.

vegai ,

Thanks, I’ll consider it. This is a gaming laptop, so I’m a bit more reluctant to mess around in there.

OboTheHobo ,

Is it still in warranty by any chance? It really shouldn’t be overheating to the point that it reboots, windoes or not.

MyNameIsRichard OP ,
@MyNameIsRichard@lemmy.ml avatar

At least you can turn them off!

woelkchen , (edited )
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Annoyances should be off by default.

Edit: Funny how the sole argument for why annoying sounds should be on by default is downvoting. I rest my case.

doona ,

Why is turning off a defaulted checkbox such a big deal? It’s KDE, surely you would be used to customising settings by now since they make it so easy.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Why is turning off a defaulted checkbox such a big deal?

Why is turning a checking box on such a big deal? Everything making sounds is an annoyance and therefore should be opt-in, just like all other kinds of annoyances such as web cookies.

Yes. Even in the current version of Plasma they can be changed easily.

iod ,
@iod@lemmy.ml avatar

Why not? Sounds are a subtle and quick indicator that something went good or bad. And if you find a particular action too repeating you can turn that sound off.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not subtle when all if the desktop plingplogs all the time about everything. Those things should be off by default and turned on only on demand in the accessibility settings for the visually impaired.

If it doesn’t matter for some and it’s an annoyance for others, it should be off and visually impaired people who rely on that can turn it on (unless their screen reader tells them anyway, then a second sound is useless for them as well).

gamma ,
@gamma@programming.dev avatar

I keep my phone on vibrate, because that subtle noise and motion is just enough to tell me that the button was actually pressed.

But if the default sounds aren’t at that level of subtly, I don’t want them either.

zaphotz , in Need Advice on a Distro for Gaming/Programming and Media Server

I just use ubuntu lts with the grafics ppa. It just works and is very well supported by third party vendors. e.g. steam works very well, docker cuda etc is available via ppa.

You can still play around with everything even if some call it Linux for noobs. But I can play with it wonderfully and work (R/Python/cuda/cpp and data science/ml stuff) at the same time without something always breaking or changing. Also, you’re most likely to find help and tutorials for ubuntu.

Snaps are annoying but still largely optional. I just replaced Firefox with the deb version via the mozilla ppa. And if snaps are too annoying just use debian.

It is also very practical to know debian/ubuntu because they are the standard systems in companies.

mothringer , in Thunderbird 115 - odd lack of packaged options beginning to raise eyebrows?

I know Gentoo has it masked for testing with this note, which is probably the same reason why other distros without the same mechanism don’t have it at all:

Testing. An upgrade from 102 isn’t recommended due to downgrading most likely not being possible. Back up your profile before attempting. Fresh install should be fine. Bug
