warmaster , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

1998 - Mandrake Linux

I bought a random Linux magazine that came with a Mandrake CD, I installed it, struggled with everything, but fell in love with the idea of Linux. So, I kept trying distros until last year, when I finally settled on an Arch based distro called Crystal Linux.

I have done 14k edits over six years. I too like it for being therapeutic. I’d rather do micro-edita on osm than play another level of candy crush. Same kind of reward but you are also helping out creating something larger!

Honestly though, I don’t think osm will ever catch up to the commercial alternatives. Mostly because their harsh stance against automatic edits (and lack of version control). Also the lack of standardization is a problem. It’s very hard to create client applications because the data is structured way different in different regions.

sunbeam60 ,

I don’t think the aim is necessarily to compete against commercial alternatives but rather to have a backstop/fallback if/when they fail.

Also don’t forget LOTS of commercial providers use OSM data for their mapping. So eventually a lot of the data does make it into people’s hands.

I regularly use OSM data through Organic Maps (mostly for larger European cities). The app is really polished and is a joy to use. So far I’m not missing any features from Google Maps.

I’ve also updated some faulty business hours for some restaurants so I guess I’ve contributed back.

E: With the recent developments in the world of free online services (YouTube blocking ad-blockers, Google lying to their customers about its TrueView ads, Twitter rate limiting free access, the Reddit API fiasco), I wonder how much longer we can take free services like Google Maps for granted. Having an open alternative may become even more important in the future.

ghariksforge ,

organic maps is a great app!

Junkdata ,

I like osmand because during several lanes it highlights the lane to go to. I noticed organic maps had something similar today when i tried it, though ill need to do more testing to see all the features.

I think organics maps has a a good clean ui. Improvement woukd definitley be compatibility when using the voice for navigation, a bit laggy but maybe ill need to adjust rhvoice. Also im seeing if it has the show the next turn on a small icon of some sort.

Osmand is good overall but it can get too cluttered real quick. Its been getting a bit slow but maybe some tweaks will help.

Also i have contributed to openstreetmaps especially toward small businesses to make it easier to find.

ghariksforge ,

OsmAnd UI is just too much.

I use it quite often, but only recently began contributing. And as they (very) wisely say at the bottom of the wiki (wiki.openstreetmap.org/…/Editing_Standards_and_Co… ):

WARNING: OpenStreetMap is highly addictive Take frequent breaks, there is a lot to be done.

mspencer712 , in Found an interesting post about Linux saving someone's life. Does anyone else have stories like this that they want to share?

I grew up poor, and reached adulthood at the tail end of the BBS days / start of the internet revolution. It was frustrating seeing so much history go by and not being able to take part in it.

Started playing with Linux early because, I think, I resented my parents never signing the permission form to let me get a school UNIX account. They thought I’d rack up thousands in long distance charges somehow. But I got Slackware 3.1 later as an adult.

I guess I wanted a taste of that “whee I’m a sysop too!” experience because in 2000 I stood up a personal domain and started making shell accounts for people on IRC. Part of my username dot net, though there’s nothing really there now. I was a bad sysadmin, though generous with my time and resources. Eventually it started feeling like a crushing weight of unresolved commitments, as the server needed more and more work that I didn’t know how to do.

The site eventually died in 2015 I think, ancient IDE hard drive finally clicked itself to death. Even more depressing. And then in the process of trying to recover the drive with Spinrite I straight up lost the drive. I think I didn’t label it well and it disappeared into a box with other IDE drives.

I found the drive again recently. I’ve been a professional C# developer since 2012 and since 2016 I’ve been with an awesome company and gotten to see a bunch of the ops side. That’s inspired me to try to get back into it, but with modern standards and security. And three ESXi servers.

Just last night I mostly finished loading my old passwd, shadow, and groups info into openldap. Got 400+ users, though I’m sure most were just ftp users who grabbed some fansub anime and split. Had 98 distinct file owners in /home/httpd/html, mostly web comics or personal file dumps. 15-ish phpbb boards. I’d love to get that all back online.

I know that won’t bring the 2000s back. Several of my users have probably passed away. Nobody will care about most of this. But it’ll feel like I’m closing out an older chapter of my life in a better way, if I get everything back online.

(And if I need to job hunt again, I can point to the site and say “behold my awesome devops skills! I can accomplish in months what a competent person can do in days!”)

nachtigall , in Helix - A modal text editor

I recently gave it a try after seeing dessalines recommending it. It is pretty cool but years of vim muscle memory won’t go away so easily :D

Fryboyter OP ,

In my opinion, users who already use vim are not the primary target audience of Helix. I see the target group more among users who want to switch from a “normal” editor to a modal editor. The selection → action model and the easier shortcuts probably make the switch easier for many. I personally don’t like vim at all because of the handling (purely subjective view). Helix will definitely not be my default editor but I get along much better with it than with vim or neovim.

KiranWells ,
@KiranWells@pawb.social avatar

When I first tried Helix, my main concern (that prevented me from getting too far into it) was not going from Vim to Helix, but the other way around. Vim (or sometimes vi) is a standard editor on almost any Linux machine, so if I am ever working on a server if a VM, I would need to know/use Vim keybinds. That made Vim a more useful tool for me to learn at the time, as I could use the skills both on my machine and anywhere else.

nachtigall ,

I don’t feel like this is true anymore. Many distros do not ship vi(m) anymore but only nano.

float , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

Yes!

I try to navigate everywhere with organic map. If I need to look up a business’ coordinates, I use a web container of gmaps I found on f-droid. If I go somewhere and it isn’t in open maps, I add it.

ezmack , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

There used to be a mobile game that would have you go around and complete tasks to fill out the map (still might be idk). That’s pretty much what google did with ingress

Obi ,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

Wait Google was using ingress submissions as data to Google maps? First I hear of that, crazy.

No1 , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

At one stage, all street names were removed from my city because of changes to the license osm was using. And my suburb was blank. I got on my bike with the app on my phone, and mapped it all over about 3 leisurely rides. And I can say I’ve been past every house in my suburb at least once 😁

I also have found it better for offroad riding and walking. Also did some track mapping offroad too.

gzrrt ,
@gzrrt@kbin.social avatar

Battery life is pretty decent, but I haven't had a 100% success rate with some of the basics like calls and texts. I've enjoyed using it as a kind of mini-tablet though, with no SIM (will keep trying again periodically).

ScotinDub ,

Ah ok, I will keep an eye on it! Really exciting project

sam ,
@sam@lemmy.ca avatar

Battery life has been excellent on the oneplus6. As others have said, there are some major issues, such as GPS and the camera not working at all. Calls were giving me issues a few months ago, but nowadays with “edge” (the latest release) they’re quite reliable.

With all the bugs and problems, I could use PostmarketOS every day with minimal issues, I used it exclusively for just over a week and it was fine. I think in ~2-3 years I’ll be using Linux on mobile as my main device.

Unfortunately it’s not fully usable on the OnePlus 6/6T yet. I would love to daily drive my 6T but it only has working audio for the first call before you have to power cycle it. VoLTE doesn’t work so you have to use 2G mode if you want to receive calls.
