chicken , in A kendama core

What is that thing?

yamapikariya OP ,
@yamapikariya@lemmyfi.com avatar

The “demon core” was a subcritical mass of plutonium-239 that was used in two criticality accidents at the Los Alamos laboratory in 1945 and 1946, resulting in the acute radiation poisoning and subsequent death of two scientists. It was called the “demon core” because of these incidents.

superkret ,

“Darwin core” would be a better name, considering how the accidents happened.

Gestrid ,

To add to what OP said, the deaths were not immediate. In the first incident, the scientist conducting the experiment died 25 days afterward from acute radiation poisoning. “Acute” doesn’t mean he suddenly had symptoms 25 days later. It just took that long for him to die after he got radiation poisoning.

The nearby security guard died 33 years after the incident, though his death (acute myeloid leukemia) can also be attributed to that incident.

The second incident with the demon core involved at least eight people. One of them died nine days after the incident. The other seven lived for several years. Of those seven, at least three of them died from complications related to the incident (such as leukemia or other causes). Of the remaining four, one of them refused to take part in any medical studies, and their medical records were withheld from them. Another died in the Korean War four years later. Two of them seem to have died of natural causes, or at least the cause was not specified.

yamapikariya OP ,
@yamapikariya@lemmyfi.com avatar

I left out the suffering details. Honestly all the radiation related deaths are horrific. That’s what I learned from the Plainly Difficult YouTube channel.

Noodle07 ,

WHY do you need a physical menu exactly?..

18+ trekman10 ,
@trekman10@union.place avatar

not everyone has smartphones, or you might not have it charged up, or you might not have data and they might not offer wifi...

It's an accessibility thing from my perspective.

Zuberi1 ,

Doesn’t really feel like a valid excuse in 2023

Snowpix ,
@Snowpix@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t know if you’ve ever realized this, but not everybody is the same as you or shares the same experiences as you. It might seem like physical menus are obsolete to you, but there are millions of people who cannot use this QR code system for menus. It does not matter what year it is, accessibility needs to be provided for those without access to QR code menus. Just because you can use them, doesn’t mean everyone else can.

Zuberi1 ,

Again, doesn’t feel like an excuse in 2023. How did you find the restaurant without GPS? How will you pay without the internet? Cash?

This is a boomer’s argument, for preventing a waste of menus being printed, every time prices change.

Snowpix ,
@Snowpix@lemmy.ca avatar

Physical maps exist. Other people exist to ask for directions. Cash exists. How do you think people functioned before smartphones were a thing? Jeez dude, it’s like you think that just because it’s 2023, the ways of doing things before smartphones are suddenly not an option because of them. Again, not everybody has access to cellphones or wants to use them just to read a friggin menu.

Zuberi1 ,

At SOME point along the way, this theoretical person could have just printed their own menu, map, and directions.

18+ trekman10 ,
@trekman10@union.place avatar

But plenty of ACTUAL people don't for whatever reason. Furthermore, plenty of people (myself included) find it ridiculous to have to take out my phone to read the menu. Why you act like the world should bend and conform to your personal wishes and experience is beyond me

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

Someone doesnt know what fake QR codes are, or the huge privacy risk associated with scanning random things out in the world.

Zuberi1 ,

Hacks the restaurant’s website, import a fake menu link, infect phones over time and slowly sell fullz on the DW

Or you know, maybe that might be too much work for the 10$ in grandma’s bank account.

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

Pretty sure grandma wont have a phone to scan the QR code, so in reality itll be what ever money someone of your intelligence has.

Zuberi1 ,

someone of your intelligence has.

Genuine lol

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

Enjoy scanning random things from your ivory tower :). Maybe one day you’ll understand not everyone is as smart and privileged as you.

Zuberi1 ,

3rd world countries have better connection to phones and the internet than some of your grandparents apparently

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

Well considering 3rd world country doesnt mean what you think, I’m absolutely sure it’s possible.

Zuberi1 ,

To answer your question, grandma got a phone. Next.

STRIKINGdebate2 ,
@STRIKINGdebate2@lemmy.world avatar

@Zuberi I can going have to ask you to please engage in a more respectful manner.

Zuberi1 ,

As a mod of a massive community, you need to consider the harm you are doing to the online community by your random decision making.

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

There was no question? But I’m glad your grandma has a phone. It must feel very good inside to have such privilege in this day and age! It’s really not that hard to understand not everyone can use a QR code. ADA laws exist for a reason. I’d totally understand if you’re just a 15 year old who’s trying to feel superior, but you’re being very ignorant to the less fortunate. Everyone would love to be able to experience all there is to life, and to gatekeep it behind a QR code is rather nonsensical.

Zuberi1 ,

An internet capable phone in 2023 costs close to no money. Again, if 3rd world countries can maintain an internet presence in the face of global imperialism, grandma can scan the fucking QR code with her dinky $20 android

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

You fail to see the point, and once again that’s okay. When technology outpaces you, you’ll come to understand what this conversation means. Take care, and try to make the world a better more accessible place if you have the capacity to do so :).

Zuberi1 ,

You may want to escape the bootlicking portion of lemmy.world before it’s too late

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

I am by no means a part of lemmy.world, if you bothered to look at my account I do not have my account based there. I also fail to see how it is relevant what so ever to our conversation? Every body gets old. New and wonderful things are constantly sprouting around us, nihilism will get you nowhere, and honestly will be a detriment to you as well… Especially as you get older and come to find yourself on the very end you’re fighting against: being able to understand how QR codes work, or what ever the newest and “greatest” invention may be.

Zuberi1 ,

When I’m “old” I’ll just adjust to the new technology, same as anybody else will…

Are you making this about ageism, racism, nationalism, or classicism? I’m genuinely confused, ngl. If they can afford dinner at a sit-down restaurant w/ a QR-code menu, I just figure they can also afford the same price/month for their phone bill.

Zoot ,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

You can absolutely hope and pray you’ll adjust, but not everyone is capable of doing so. Do you not remember, or are you not old enough to know how difficult it was to get grandma to use a texting app? All I’m trying to help you understand is that not everyone is capable of learning how to use these things. Whether it be age, disability, or any number of things.
