You can criticise both without uncritically buying into propaganda, but everyone that is absolutely rabid about china always seems to be “well its bad but totally redeeemable” about the United States which is inarguably a worse force in the world, and far less popular at home too.
So, I follow the Texas Tribune, and we get a story or two every week about heat waves in Texas prisons killing another dozen people while the state legislature refuses to fund air condition to get temperatures under 90 degrees inside cells. We also get the periodic story about migrant detention camps on the border with agents caught doing human trafficking, physical and sexual abuse up to and including outright torture, and the horrific death of small children. Finally, there’s the annual tradition of investigating Texas CPS or Texas Juvenile detention officials for a new raft of allegations involving agents trading nude pictures of children for narcotics or cash.
Every day a new horror in the Lone Star State, and we just kinda shrug and insist this is how a liberal democracy with a well-educated electorate and professional political institutions are supposed to behave.

Considering how close the vehicles are to the bridge height, I wonder how many were inaccurately measured. Like the truck for an example. The driver might have been told that the cargo space was 12ft tall, and so it should have fit just fine. However, in reality the height of the truck is actually 13ft, so a few inches gets taken off the top.
Oh, I didn’t realize that was specifically telling the drivers in the video that they were too tall. I thought it was just a general warning to anyone passing through.
No, it actually measures vehicles if they’re short enough to pass. My guess would be a IR receiver-transmitter combo with a simple “flash if tripped” circuit, but still, that is enough to draw the driver’s attention.
Originally, there was a pair of flashing lights next to a sign that said “Overheight when flashing” that would light up if the sensor was tripped. Then they replaced it with traffic lights that would stop traffic and flash “OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN” like you see here if the sensor was tripped.
Of course, that caused the dumb truck drivers to just floor it and run the red light.
webp is just a container for the png - you can “save as…” and change it to png, and it should work. changing the file extension from webp to png after downloading also works
it’s also used for more than just this png; most of the time I run into a webp, it usually holds a jpg
should be in the url for the file itself. this post, as an example, if I’m trying to save the thumbnail itself (from desktop browser), it gives me the link, with png hidden before the “format=”:
just takes a little looking around the urls 99% of the time. for mobile, I’m of limited help there. and I hope browsers support the container more directly in the future, because I agree that it isn’t as straightforward as it could be. I’ve also been seeing it pop up much more frequently in recent years, but that’s just me
At least in jerboa when I download the image it gets saved as PNG. It could be that the web ui shows images as webp by default to make it faster or save resources
If you are using a web browser that supports webp, it can potentially improve load times by a lot, as webp is much more space/bandwidth efficient. I’m assuming this is why the instances are auto converting from other formats.
