Hidden Gem you say? (obligatory)

chaorace , in Should I play Dark Souls original or Remaster?
@chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Dark Souls 1 is 100% worth playing. I won’t be a purist and say that you need to play it before 3, because they’re mostly standalone experiences… but you might miss a handful of references if you play 3 first.

As for how to play: if money’s not a question, buy the remaster – you’ll get a better online experience that way.

If you’re on a budget, however, you could simply Install the DSFix mod and start playing with the adaptive controller as-is. There’s unfortunately no in-game rebinding UI, but you can still do remapping using either the Xbox Accessories app or directly in the Steam overlay (requires Steam to be in Big Picture mode).

I'm giving the first another shot with DSFix because I am a cheap ass, haha. So far so good. Definitely a little different learning curve but it kept my ass up until 3am playing. Managed to get to the boss on the bridge with the mallet. He flattened me after the archers spammed me to death. Good times.

I feel obligated to recommend a Steam Deck if you have interest in one and can afford it.

We have 2 and I would get a 3rd if I could lol (with a bulky protective case etc. so I can be less careful)

The most cost efficient way to go is buy the cheapest version and then put something like this in it https://www.westerndigital.com/en-il/products/internal-drives/pc-sn740-ssd#SDDPTQD-256G

IMPORTANT NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU GET A 2230 SIZED NVME DRIVE. 2280 drives will NOT fit.

If you don't want to do that you can alternatively just get a big micro SD card and save the SSD swap for laterFor best speeds you want it to say A2 and have a 3 inside a U.

Even besides playing video games it's an awesome little mini pc. Not perfect but awesome, and an amazing value at $359.

Bumblefumble ,

Wait does the 64GB option support M.2 NVMe? I thought it only supports eMMC and that you can't swap with a different NVMe drive, but maybe I'm wrong?

RaleighEnt ,

as someone with a 64gb deck with a 512gb drive swapped in I can confirm it works!

Yoreo ,

The 64GB emmc drive in the Deck uses the m.2 expansion slot, so you can pop out the emmc drive and swap in a 2230 form factor nvme drive and be gtg after reinstalling SteamOS.

I myself went from a 256GB drive to a 1TB drive, and this weekend, I'll be popping in a 2TB drive I just received in the mail.

Catch42 ,
@Catch42@kbin.social avatar

You can swap the ssd! Why are they charging so much to upgrade to only 256gb of Nvme storage?

Pixelologist ,
@Pixelologist@beehaw.org avatar

Probably because they're losing money on the cheapest one

Donut County is only $3.89. It’s a short, funny, cute puzzle game where you make everything fall in a hole. Really good.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth is $12.49 and a much better 80hr RPG then it has any right to be. And I never even touched the second game in the collection!

for me, I'm really fixated on Cassette Beasts, because Pokemon has been disappointing for me for a long while now. I keep debating on whether I buy it now, or wait until they implement the online multiplayer they just announced.

It's not super niche, or super on sale, but I'm really enjoying Chained Echos so far.

MadSciencePro ,

Hot take: Chained Echoes is a much better game than Octopath Traveler 2.

I fell in love with Submerged when I played it. It's an exploration game set in a flooded city, where you play a young girl looking for supplies for her injured brother. Lots of navigating between buildings in a little boat, climbing around, and taking in the scenery. Incredibly relaxing to play.

There’s a whole bunch of smaller (indie) games in my cart right now. I’ll have to check each of them out a bit better and see if they’ll run on Linux and probably throw half of them out.

I am curious about Dredge though.

Reil , in Pokémon Go Dev Lays Off 230 Employees, Cancels Upcoming Marvel Game

Niantic seems to have trouble telling if a franchise is a good fit for the tech they have and the gameplay it enables. Marvel, Transformers, HP, and Basketball don't lend themselves well to the grindy collection and exploration mechanics.

We'll see how well Monster Hunter holds up, gameplay wise. It at least has a repeatable thing that sorta makes sense thematically (like fighting several Rathalos to gather parts) as opposed to having 5 clones of LeBron James or getting... stickers of stuff that you might recognize.

Welcome to 2020's fad Ubisoft. Nowadays we hype AI parsers and generators if we want VC money.

“Elden Ring” achievement in Elden Ring (obtain all achievements.) I am a very casual gamer and I played very little of dark souls 3 but I couldn’t get past the tutorial boss so I gave up. I heard many great thing about Elden Ring so I decided to give a FromSoft game another try. The freedom of that game made it really easy for a casual player like myself to go my own pace and get used to the i-frames. I fell in love with the game and my first play through I used as many summons as I could but my other play throughs I hardly used any. It turned me into a gamer that dodged and used parries which I never did before. Very good game and I’m excited to play the dlc.

You didn’t mention System Shock, so maybe System Shock.

It was originally released in 1994 but a remake was just recently released and has had favorable feedback. Deus Ex, BioShock and Prey are spiritual successors.

Hollow Knight 112% "Pure Completion"

One of my favorite games, but it's so hard.
