I’ve been playing it a bunch since the big 1.4.4 patch, it’s crazy how much work the devs have put it to polish this game into a cheap but high quality game gem over the years.
I really enjoyed Paradise Killer, a fun murder mystery game with a really solid soundtrack and neat visuals. I had a great time exploring the island uncovering its secrets and getting to know the remaining characters, and when I finished the game I was done. No loose ends or unanswered questions left, just a nice experience to remember (and a soundtrack to occasionally revisit)
Humble started as this way to get a bunch of interesting indie games all at once. It’s a bummer that’s fallen to the wayside for AAA games. It’s rather get a dozen indie games of differing genres than get these bigger hit games and a couple of hit or miss indie games. It’s a bummer how humble has changed.
I’d say the intervening… what was it… 15 year?.. gap is what killed my love for the game series. I was in middle school when I played the first one, and I never even bothered with KH3. The story was painfully overwrought by the end of KH2, and I knew that tacking on another sequel wasn’t going to fix it. Nomura is going to Nomura.
It’s a shame because the series was one of my favorites back in the day. At least the soundtrack will always be good.
I did not play EA, and overall I am enjoying it. The issues I have are the random mechanics that are thrown in as one time things like chase scenes and a stealth sections. Those are plain not fun, and could have been something else entirely.
Potential spoilers for the main story ahead!
spoilerThe portrayal of the Sea People seems very Chinese caricature at a few points. Plus the quests they give are kind of not fun. I could do without them altogether honestly.
So glad to see Roadwarden mentioned! Another short game I played recently is Paradise Marsh. Its not really text-focused (it’s more dialogue and only some snippets of lore pieces) but it’s a short simple game with a very nice story. It also has birds that make poems!
TimeShift came out in 2007, and that game was the bomb. Loved the concept with the suits that can control time, and the game play felt really smooth. Nothing beats freezing time and grabbing the enemies’ weapons from them and shooting them with it.
I loved the bullet time in OG Max Payne game (2001).
I was addicted to EverQuest since I started playing it in 2001 for at least 10 years. They don’t call it “EverCrack” for nothing. No matter how I feel about it now, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I also played PlanetSide MMOFPS for at least 4 years since it released back in 2003, and it was so great. I hear both good and bad things about its successor, PlanetSide 2, but haven’t tried it for the fear of it ruining my nostalgia of the original.
Starsiege: Tribes was an awesome game too. I was a beta tester for that one way back in '98, in the days before broadband was a thing. I still have an installation CD hand-signed by the devs that they had to ship to all the testers, because downloading 500+ MB over dial-up was not feasible.
Earthsiege 2 was the game for which I went out to CompUSA and bought a joystick that had swivel function (MS SideWinder 3D Pro).
I’ve actually just started this myself and I I was actually a little worried there was too much going on at first. That however proved to be unfounded and I’ve been having a really good time with it.
I won’t lie, I’m not in love with the sushi/management side of it, but I love the diving and fishing. The games got a really nice style to it too; some of the cutscenes are fantastic.
