ShovelKnightFan , in What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?

Gotta be Portal 2. The puzzles are fun, the difficultly curve is reasonable, and the writing is fantastic. Truly the only complaint I have is that I wish there was more of it.

grady77 , in Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

Seriously! I absolutely loved it. It was so nice just getting to explore and puzzle things out. A good balance of that plus a few intense moments. Just an awesome experience!

jaw , in What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?

Outer Wilds

Schedar ,

Agreed. There is something very special about Outer Wilds

Nyla_Smokeyface , in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

YES. I know exactly how you feel. ADHD really prevents me from actually hitting play.

Silverhand , in Aonuma says Nintendo not thinking about classic style Zelda games at the moment. Does anyone think it likely they could use a third party developer again, like when Capcom made the Minish Cap ?
@Silverhand@beehaw.org avatar

Eh, other developers are already basically making Zelda games minus the name, and you can play them without giving nintendo money. Unsighted, Death’s Door, and Crosscode are all great and take strong inspiration from Zelda, just to name a few.

Omegan ,

Crosscode is such a great game. I really should get back to that once I’m caught up on a few other titles.

audaxdreik ,

Keep your eyes open for Mina the Hollower hopefully later this year, it wears its Link’s Awakening inspiration on its sleeve. Adorable mouse character and healthy dose of Castlevania mashup from the developers of Shovel Knight, I’ll be surprised if it turns out anything other than a slam dunk.

Backed the kickstarter and eagerly awaiting it!

Bioshock I think, loved it so much. Excellent writing and graphic design. Wish the remaster had improved the visuals more tho

HowlsSophie ,

Yesssss loved this game. Played all three and nothing hits like the first one.

jeanofthedead ,

Truth. I still love Infinite, though. I may be in the minority for that, but it’s such a bizarre atmosphere and the imagery and soundtrack really stuck with me. Welcome to the circus of VALUE!

HowlsSophie ,

Oh geez, I’d forgotten about the circus of VALUE! Gotta emphasize it like that 😂. I think I found Infinite to be more of a mixed bag. Creepy but in a different way. All I remember is being killed by George Washington 😂

sculd , in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

Oh absolutely. But I found that the best way is to just hit “play” without thinking too much. If I am not in the mood I can stop anytime.

Another trick is to find a game that can complete a round in a short time (recently playing “20 minute still dawn”). That would help a lot.

MattBoySlim , in What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?

For me, probably Half-Life 2. Especially at the time? It was such a leap ahead in both technology and overall world immersion. I still revisit it sometimes and get sucked right back in.

I’ll agree with you on Beatles Rock Band too, though. It’s a work of art.

BigBananaDealer OP ,
@BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee avatar

ive never played a half life game before. maybe i should start

ShovelKnightFan ,

The original Half Life is pretty fun, but I’d recommend checking out Black Mesa. It’s a remake of the original game in the same engine that Half-Life 2 uses, and changes some things for the better.

Maybe Tetris? Such a simple concept, and it’s one of the most popular games of all time.

Minecraft for similar reasons. Even if it has become more complex in recent years, the core of it is just…you can break everything and build anything. It’s hard to say that isn’t a perfect sandbox.

More personal opinion though, maybe Super Mario Odyssey. Just incredibly polished and varied with an amazing movement system.

hascat ,

Tetris is an interesting one because you’ve got 3+ decades of variations on the original, but the original is still the best. I’d argue it’s a perfect game.

neotecha ,

I personally disagree that the original is best. It’s high up there, but I think some of the later titles have improvements that eek out the #1 spot.

I’m a fan of the “piece swap” feature, and later games have polished the piece lock over the original. Tetris 99 was the sweet spot for games that I’ve played.

followthewhiterabbit , in Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

Can’t recommend playing it on Steam Deck enough. Amazing pick-up-and-play game that looks incredible on the screen!

jimp ,

I agree, it’s great on the Steam Deck. I played for a bit on my laptop and it was fine there but it was a much better experience on the Deck.

HidingCat , in Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

It's available on PC and there's a sale on Steam too, 25% off, biggest discount so far. Been looking to pick it up.

Marvin42 , in Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

I’m rather new to Playstation. What do you mean with ‘it’s going away soon’? If I have a Playstation subscription and ‘buy’ it (for free, as part of the subscription) can I keep playing it? Or do I need to complete it before a cut of date?

patchymoose OP ,
@patchymoose@beehaw.org avatar

As long as you download it now, then you can keep the game as long as you’re a member of PS+. So if you even think you might play it in the future, download it now. Once it rotates off the subscription, then it won’t be available for download anymore (but people who already downloaded it can keep it).

wildeaboutoskar ,
@wildeaboutoskar@beehaw.org avatar

Slightly off topic but do you find PS+ worth it? I’m toying with getting it at the moment

ndguardian , in Mortal Kombat 1 has a beloved new character: Johnny Cage’s Roomba

The only thing that would make this better would be to include the Roomba as part of a fatality.

IcedCoffeeBitch , in What games would you recommend for someone that only recently got into gaming?

The Mario RPG franchise is very good actually, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and Super Mario RPG being my favorites. I’ve heard good things about Paper Mario too.

Oh and the Earthbound series is very good too, but the Mario franchise is more beginner friendly.

sincle354 ,

If they’re on PC, you can always emulate these. If you have steamdeck or something I would happily recommend Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story as the pinnacle of the M&L series IMO.

Steve , in Aonuma says Nintendo not thinking about classic style Zelda games at the moment. Does anyone think it likely they could use a third party developer again, like when Capcom made the Minish Cap ?

I would loooove if we could get top down Zelda games occasionally between BotW-style games. Like how we get 2D and 3D Mario games. I definitely don’t need an Ocarina of Time type of Zelda anymore though. That version aged and doesn’t hold up very well anymore IMO.

alehel ,

Interesting. OOT is the only one I’ve continued to return to.
