IcedCoffeeBitch , in What games would you recommend for someone that only recently got into gaming?

The Mario RPG franchise is very good actually, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and Super Mario RPG being my favorites. I’ve heard good things about Paper Mario too.

Oh and the Earthbound series is very good too, but the Mario franchise is more beginner friendly.

sincle354 ,

If they’re on PC, you can always emulate these. If you have steamdeck or something I would happily recommend Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story as the pinnacle of the M&L series IMO.

Steve , in Aonuma says Nintendo not thinking about classic style Zelda games at the moment. Does anyone think it likely they could use a third party developer again, like when Capcom made the Minish Cap ?

I would loooove if we could get top down Zelda games occasionally between BotW-style games. Like how we get 2D and 3D Mario games. I definitely don’t need an Ocarina of Time type of Zelda anymore though. That version aged and doesn’t hold up very well anymore IMO.

alehel ,

Interesting. OOT is the only one I’ve continued to return to.

xohoo , in Steam Summer Sale - What are your favorite Local Multiplayer Games?

Untitled goose game, It takes Two and Portal 2 were very fun in local coop. Did not know divinity had local coop thanks!

Hyphlosion , in If you could only play one game exclusively, which one would it be?

@GlowingLantern I’d have a compilation so I could enjoy multiple titles in one package. Super Mario 3D All-Stars or the Sonic Mega Collection come to mind!

Speaking of loopholes, I'd install a game engine and create all the games I want to play myself. There are a few of them on Steam and IIRC, the Switch has a game to teach game development (basically a simple game engine with tutorials), so technically it wouldn't be cheating.

2d zelda is my absolute favorite and I do hope we haven’t seen the last of them. I’d even settle for a Seasons/Ages reboot. 😩

thatsTheCatch , in Steam Summer Sale - What are your favorite Local Multiplayer Games?

I am bookmarking this post to come back to later. I’ve gotten my partner into video games and we like playing local multiplayer, specifically co-op.

Our favourites are: Overcooked and Stardew Valley (Nintendo Switch version has split screen).

Ones we enjoy are: ibb & obb, Jumpjet Rex, Shutshimi, Spiritfarer.

bobbo , in Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

I’ve been thinking about picking it up in the current Steam sale. Roughly how many hours do yo think it takes to complete at a pretty slow/casual pace? Mainly wondering if it’s worth $22.50 as I’ve read it’s a somewhat short game. Was going to wait for it to come down closer to $15 but I’m ready for a new casual/cute game now so I could be convinced to get it sooner rather than later lol

EhrinCB ,

I’ve never quite understood the “dollar to hour” ratio people seem to crave. Games are the only media that people apply this “rule” to. I’ve never heard of someone talk about the Dollar to Time ratio of a book, or a movie, or tv series. They mostly just talk about how it’s a good or bad series. Maybe I’m off base, but I just find it weird.

I’d say it’s worth $22.50

nix , in What games would you recommend for someone that only recently got into gaming?

Some old story classics: BioShock (play 1 then the others if you like 1 enough), Mass Effect, Half Life 2 (You don’t need to play 1 first).

ascagnel ,

These can’t be that old. There’s no way Half-Life 2 is … nineteen years old?!?!?!

Evergreen5970 , in Steam Summer Sale - What are your favorite Local Multiplayer Games?

Overcooked. Really makes you think about the phrase “too many cooks in the kitchen.”

eleanor , in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

The plight of the adult gamer with an amount of disposable income. Too many games to play and not enough time.

I get stuck with those problems most of the time I open my Steam library. Too many games that I haven’t started. Too many that I haven’t finished. Yet I still find myself rotating between the same 2 or 3.

I’m not a streamer; I feel that people watching me play would be waaaaay too much stres.

Ikita_Ro , in Is it me or are games really not fun anymore

I might offer a slightly different take on this than you tend to see. Yes, it is very common for enjoyment of entertainment to be based on external factors (free time, friends, family). But the modern gaming landscape has changed overall quite a lot. It is entirely possible that the type of games you truly enjoy have gotten lost in the sauce, and just aren’t made as much these days. Likely a combination of the two, but if you’re having the feeling, trust it. That feeling is valid, and claims that everything is the same, you just have external differences feels a bit gas-lighty. Good luck out there~

knokelmaat ,

I quite like your answer and tend to agree. Just wanted to add that while popular games have changed over time, the sheer amount of games that get made these days is insane. I would recommend to see what strange indie stuff is being made, this is something that helped me when I had similar feelings. When not bound by large budgets or investors, really awesome experiences are still possible.

Examples: A Short Hike, Vampire Survivors, Outer Wilds, Undertale, Stardew Valley, Rocket League …

Any imaginable genre is still getting new and interesting stuff IMO, it’s just that mainstream gaming has gotten worse (again, IMO).

But it is true that you shouldn’t simply discard what you’re feeling! I really love that about your answer.

crius ,

The small indie titles are what is saving my passion for gaming since quite some time now. It’s also what’s saving my wallet as usually they focus on good gameplay more than flashy presentation which helps in not having to spend a ton on a “competitive” hardware.

Leafeytea , in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum developer to close after disastrous launch

I have a lifetime account at LoTRO. Whenever stories about games based on LoTR come up, I am always hoping it will become something awesome, but they all just seem to flop. The ownership rights of the IP are also so fractured and convoluted, it's kind of a miracle anything actually gets made let alone made well. Maybe someone will actually step up at some point to make a game that really embraces the magic in Tolkien's universe, instead of trying to change it and them calling it lightning in a bottle.

TMoney ,

It’s unfortunate isn’t it. Kind of reminds me of my beloved Halo universe. Most anything that comes out is just hot garbage and it hurts me. I’d even take something mediocre at this point but most of it is just bad.

Omegamanthethird , in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

Yeah, I have a growing backlog. When I want to get back into a game, I think about if I'll remember what I was doing or if I'll remember the controls or if I'll ruin my save file.

What also hit hard when I lost my save file halfway through The Last of Us Part II. That game is hella depressing and intense, and I've struggled to go back through it.

All of that is compounded by the fact that I have some old comfort games that I play on my phone or Switch.

But recently, Theatrhythm and Final Fantasy XVI have got me back into the rhythm of things.

ExoMonk , in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

This happened to me when I was streaming. My favorite hobby became like a job. I only played while streaming and the time I was putting in outside of work was kind of killing me. Working a full day, coming home to do dinner and time with my wife and then start streaming by 8pm a couple days a week. It exhausted me. At some point I started to skip days and then I just never went back. Now I play games as a form of entertainment like watching Netflix/Hulu. I do it for leisure.

Sometimes I miss it though and think maybe I should try and get back into it but so far I've just not.

Mickey , in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

Yeah I feel that with many hobbies too as well as gaming. I feel like there is a culture of, if you’re not doing something productive you’re wasting time. But in reality I think everyone needs a break. You can’t possibly be always productive, that ruins the whole point of relaxing!

It’s not easy to get away from either, but I’ve found that dedicating time to just not being productive and filling it with what you want to do is a good start. I work from home now so separating my day into chunks is even more important than ever because I my work space is also my PC gaming space.

Just try not to feel like you need to get something meaningful out of everything I guess. Sometimes it can just be fun.
