Why is serveral instances down simultaneously? Is it just me?

Lemmy.ml is down right now (back online, was unreachable for about 6 hours) (isitdownorjust.me)

lemmy.world had a DDOS in the past 24 hours, Lemmy.ml was showing problem, but now it is entirely unreachable. lemmy.world was showing “Error!” page (server still reachable), but that seems to have only lasted for a hour or so.

PSA: Mastodon is NOT Twitter and does not aim to be.

I've spent more than 7 years in Mastodon, and in my experience, new users always come in with a Twitter mindset, then getting a cultural shock because they come to Mastodon expecting a Twitter experience and end up finding something strange and bizarre....

I know that recent drama has caused a bit of uneasiness in the community for this platforms future, but I am optimistic for lemmy. It might be helpful to look to mastodon to learn how to move forward.

Dont forget to do your part by telling other people not on lemmy to try it. Its content has improved a lot so ask them to try it again if they didnt find communities they liked before. It will help the continued growth :)

What about a new mixed-feed which merges the Subscribed, Local and All feed based on probabilities customable by the user e.g. 10/40/50 or 0/20/80? (lemmy.world)

This would push users toward local posts (especially on smaller instances) while still supporting a better distribution of user engagement over the threadiverse. And if you don’t trust that it was implemented correctly – you can simply check it by counting the amounts of posts against your chosen probabilities....
