UrLogicFails OP , to gaming in Xbox's new policy — say goodbye to unofficial accessories from November thanks to error '0x82d60002'

I’ve never been one to play competitive online games since I have the hand/ eye coordination of a house plant, so I can’t weigh in on the advantages of blocking controllers that are “unfair”; but as someone who hated button mashing “A” in Animal Crossing, I can say that custom controllers can definitely have a place with a console.

In my opinion, this feels like Microsoft simply wanted more licensing money and is doing it under the guise of fair online play. It reminds me of Apple locking faster charging and data transfer on USB-C to their own proprietary USB cables.

Hopefully this does not negatively affect too many people.

GunnarRunnar ,

The unfair advantage argument definitely holds water, mouse and keyboard can be like a sports car racing against a bicycle. But if someone had the budget to tackle this issue through software, it would be Microsoft. So I’m inclined to agree that it’s mostly just MS squeezing money out of third party manufacturers.

If they’d care only about the “unfair”, they’d put a fair, almost free, price on the official license that covers the cost of testing or whatever. Truth presumably here is also a bit more complicated, maybe third party controllers could be easier to hack resulting in an ineffective licensing system, idk. But yeah smells like money for Microsoft and a loss for consumers.

tombuben ,

Wouldn’t the unfair advantage only hold water if they blocked unauthorized accessories only with online multi-player games and leave single-player experiences alone?

GunnarRunnar ,

That’s honestly an incredibly good solution.

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Okay, but you already can’t use a keyboard and mouse in most games on an Xbox. It has to specifically be enabled by the developer, and the game would have to be coded to even accept that input.

All HID input devices have identifiers that they communicate to the host to determine their functions. I guess you could potentially make a device that appears to be a controller and translates keyboard/mouse with a couple USB inputs. You could probably get a Pi to do that. But no one cares about winning on console that badly, they just go play on PC 🙄

Quasari ,

Search xbox mouse adapter on amazon. There are so many products that do what you describe people wouldn’t care to do because they don’t care.

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Okay, then I’m going to default back to the fact that someone’s going to break the DRM and still make those devices, and this is only going to hurt people using accessible controllers.

Quasari ,

You are probably right. Devices like these in the old days used to require you hook up an official controller to it to get past the drm. Likely will evolve back to that.

tal ,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

I guess you could potentially make a device that appears to be a controller and translates keyboard/mouse with a couple USB inputs

They control the console, the OS, the controller hardware, and can require the console to connect to them. They already have the ability to push out controller firmware updates. They can have the controller cryptographically authenticate to the console and push blacklists to the console of keys that get leaked (like if someone somehow extracts a key from a legit controller and uses it to make a knockoff).

FlihpFlorp ,

One thing that kinda sprang to mind was accessible controllers. Ik Microsoft makes one and I’m sure there’s some approved but my thoughts are what if it doesn’t serve your needs

I’m tired so hopefully this makes sense

princessnorah ,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I wonder if QuadStick has approval. Specifically designed for people with minimal to no hand function, which their controller isn’t going to fucking work for.

flak ,

Given it’s advertised on Microsoft’s page for the Adaptive Controller I’m going to guess yes.

Sternhammer ,

I hope this isn’t Microsoft becoming more Apple-like. That said, if this leads to a restriction on the use of cheat-capable controller accessories such as the Chronos Zen then it could be a significant positive for FPS console gamers.

It reminds me of Apple locking faster charging and data transfer on USB-C to their own proprietary USB cables.

Are you sure of that? It was certainly rumoured before the release of the iPhone 15 Pro that Apple would require MFi cables for high speed data transfer but I don’t think that turned out to be true. As far as I can tell any high speed USB-C cable will allow full speed transfer from an IPhone 15 Pro. It might need to be a Thunderbolt 3 cable, especially for recording to external SSD, not sure, I’m no expert, but I don’t think it needs to be an MFi cable.

princessnorah , (edited )
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You’re correct about the specs of the device. However, after announcement/release there was controversy that the cable included in the box is only capable of USB 2.0 transfer speeds. But Marques Brownlee pointed out that the same is usually true with the included cable for Android devices too. I got a portable SSD to use with my iPad Pro and it just comes with a short high-speed cable anyway…

Edit: The included cable with the iPad is also only 2.0 speeds, even though it has a USB4 40Gbps port.

I absolutely love my surface go and making a repairable one will be fantastic. I just wish they’d finally make a 512gb version!

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Hows battery life on the go 4? I have a surface pro 7 which is neither fast, nor gets good battery life so it’s pretty useless to me.

A pro 9 with the P cores turned off or go 4 would actually be a pretty neat device for me.

realitista ,

I’m still on the Go 1 waiting for a 512gb version ;-). It’s probably not what you want as a daily driver. For me it’s something I use in meetings and on airplanes when I travel. For that it’s perfect.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

That’s mostly what I used my pro 7 for, but even that it struggled with. With nothing else running doing RDP I get 2-3 hours of battery life which is just awful. And if I try to do widi or just about anything at all on the screen I get closer to an hour of battery life until the throttling sets in and it’s unusable. Thank god the pro 8 added a fan for all models.

realitista ,

Battery life is much better on the go I think. Even on my old model, if I turn off wifi and turn down the brightness I can take notes all day. On full brightness with no Wi-Fi I can watch videos for like 4-6 hours on the plane. But when I have Wi-Fi or LTE enabled, it’s probably only 3 hours. I’m sure a new one would improve that by 50% or so. But you don’t want to have more than 2-3 apps open at a time, and you wanna use Firefox instead of Chrome.

Embracing the sustainable… sounds good Tablets especially have no reason to not be easy to take apart they shouldn’t be a device consumers expect high IPX ratings for and their tasks can make them viable for a long time. I just went from 0-2 iPads a 2 and a first gen air, the air has a dodgy battery and the ifixit guide has about 80 steps! But both function fine in 2023 apart from the by design obsolescence.

autotldr Bot , to technology in iFixit partners with Microsoft to offer parts for Surface Pro 9, Laptop 5, and Go 4

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Last year, President Biden took credit for Microsoft pivoting to support Right to Repair.

No matter who deserves the credit, announcements like the one today and several others in Microsoft’s recent history show that they are committed to helping consumers repair their devices.

In the iFixit announcement, they focus on their expanded ability to assist their customers in repairing 15 Surface devices.

You can visit the post to get a link to each device on the iFixit site, or head directly to Microsoft’s Repair Hub for more help.

As Microsoft pairs with more of their Authorized Service Providers to distribute official OEM parts to repair their outstanding Surface products and other hardware they may have planned in the future, they become a more trusted and dependable company for customers to invest in.

With Satya Nadella’s recent comments on how canceling the Windows Phone was a mistake, maybe we will see it make a come-back with repairability in mind, leading the mobile segment in this consumer-first approach to technology devices.

autotldr Bot , to pcgaming in HONOR announces its first ARM PC built on Snapdragon X Elite will release next year

This is the best summary I could come up with:

If you haven’t been seeing the steady stream of news coming out of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit taking place in Hawaii, it’s time to catch up.

Breaking news already hit with the announcement of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite platform that looks to outperform both Mac and Intel, as well as the popular video editing app Davinci’s Resolve coming to ARM.

After the introduction, George Zhao took the stage and talked through several of their upcoming projects, but the presentation finished with the exciting news that HONOR is developing an ARM PC using the newly announced Snapdragon X Elite platform.

The presentation promises that the new PC will have incredible performance, on-device AI, and multi-device connectivity and will be lightweight and slim.

This announcement will likely be the first of many companies as the promise of the power and performance of the new Snapdragon platform entices them to develop new ARM PCs.

George Zhao’s comments on collaboration were well-timed as the tech industry gets increasingly competitive, and companies like Qualcomm and HONOR are working together to bring great consumer products to market.

No you will still need to host Peertube on your server or VPS etc not even sure why they call it PEERtube because it’s clearly not peer to peer. Kodemystic ,
@Kodemystic@lemmy.kodemystic.dev avatar

My bad it actually uses a combnation of hosting and peer to peer. But still its not fully decentralized as I was suggesting. Peertube instances need to be hosted and videos are uploaded to the instance and kept in the instance storage. So its not dully decentralized. Its actually more centralized than not it seems.

netchami ,

You mean BitChute but not filled with fascist garbage?

PyroNeurosis ,
@PyroNeurosis@lemmy.world avatar

There’s the rub, isn’t it? Fascists are the ones most actively seeking new platforms to move to after their removal from any other, meaning a lot of the start-up content has to be thoroughly filtered, which takes a lot of effor and resources away from growth.

netchami ,

Non-fascists should also just switch away from YouTube. We just need to outnumber the Nazis on alternative platforms like Odysee. BitChute is a hopeless case, but we actually have a chance on Odysee. PeerTube is great though, there are a lot instances that are free of Nazis. It has some other issues though. Sticking with YouTube definitely isn’t an option.

smileyhead ,

You mean PeerTube?

netchami ,

Yeah PeerTube is cool, but it has its own set of issues. 1. It’s very expensive for an individual to run an instance 2. The federation mechanism doesn’t really work 3. It’s just too fragmented to replace YouTube due to that fragmentation 4. The search is horrible, also because of the aforementioned issues. I am aware that Sepia Search exists, but it should be built in to PeerTube itself. In general, it’s not very friendly to new users. The entire UI/UX could use some improvements.

Robaque ,

Yes and no. Cool project but I gotta be honest I’m not a big fan of Louis Rossman / FUTO’s "open source but not free " stance.

Devouring , (edited )

It’s open source and it’s free. You’re free to pay too if you want to support them. Software costs money.

What Louis is protecting against in his license is repurposing the app with malware and ads like was repeatedly done with new pipe. Pick your poison.

NightAuthor ,

No! Libertarian GPL or DIE!

./s, kinda

Devouring ,

I’m not sure I understand your philosophy there or you’re joking. Why is GPL so important? Isn’t the purpose of open-source to validate that no funny business is happening?

NightAuthor , (edited )

That is a purpose of open source.

First, I was wrong in linking libertarian with GPL, I was thinking of permissive licenses like MIT. GPL is a CopyLeft license, in that it forbids proprietization. MIT is more like, do whatever the hell you want, you just can’t sue me.

The joke should have been “Libertarian MIT License or DIE!”

I think MIT is actually a pretty rough license, because it allows someone to come along, take the open source work, add anything, or virtually nothing and then start selling it as their own while keeping any new code secret… when they got it for free. I’m mostly against that, but there are people who believe strongly in that type of license.

I’m more in favor of GPL like licenses (not prescriptively, but preferentially) because they force the work and its derivatives to be shared by the community, for the work to continue to be open source.

smileyhead ,

Free as in price, not as in freedom.

Robaque , (edited )

I mean it’s not NewPipe’s fault that Google Play hosts malware.

Based on what Louis Rossmann said it does seem the more restrictive licence comes from a place of good intentions:

[11:19] If you download this application and you decide that you want to modify the source code so you can run a build that’s a little bit more amendable to your use case on your phone, we have no problem with that. However if you modify the source code of this application to insert advertisements trackers or malware in it and then try to redistribute our application with maare ads or trackers in it in a deceptive way we will come after you. That is why we have a license that is not as permissive as NewPipes’.

But idk if that’s also what the license actually means legally-speaking. I’m no expert but section 4 seems pretty dubious:

FUTO TEMPORARY LICENSE:This license grants you the rights, and only the rights, set out below in respect of the source code provided. If you take advantage of these rights, you accept this license. If you do not accept the license, do not access the code. Words used in the Terms of Service have the same meaning in this license. Where is the profit on the page? The revenue isn’t profit, it’s how much money they make without the costs.

    Then how do you expect a browser to survive without revenue? There are 3 major browser engines on the market today :

    • chromium (backed up by Google, sucking big money)
    • blinkwebkit (baked up by apple, with big money too)
    • Gecko (I think) for Firefox. And it also needs lots of funding.

    Al of them suck up huge amount of money.

    For revenue, they also have more products than Firefox en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mozilla_products which also make money or not.
