athos77 , to news in ‘Storm of the century’ washes away Russia’s Crimea bridge barriers

It emerged last week that Moscow and Beijing have discussed building an “underwater tunnel” connecting mainland Russia and occupied Crimea, amid mounting Russian fears that the Kerch Bridge, which has been successfully struck twice by Ukraine, remains vulnerable.

China still claims to be neutral here, guess this is just "civil engineering" then.

Diplomjodler ,

Maybe Elon’s Boring Company could help them out.

DaDragon ,

To be fair, it’s a fairly normal civilian construction contract. As a capitalist, you go/do the things that make money. If that includes building bridges in an active war zone, it doesn’t matter as long as the bill gets footed.

echodot ,

I suspect that China will insist on money down though, which Russia will never agree to (partly because they don’t have it, but also partly because it goes against their political philosophy of always trying to hold all of the cards) so this probably isn’t going to happen.

I really can’t see China being prepared to take Russia’s word for it that they’ll get the correct compensation otherwise.

HeartyBeast , to world in BBC’s Jeremy Bowen admits he ‘got it wrong’ in Gaza hospital report but has ‘no regrets’
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

To be clear Bowen did not from my recollection say that the strike was from Israeli. He did, however, incorrectly say that the hispital had been "flattened" based in drone footage he was looking at on screen.

ZahzenEclipse ,

I mean technically yes but it's one of those things where you're saying Israel did it without saying it directly. Its really not much better.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

No. The programme as a whole said responsibility hadn’t been determined. The news was breaking as Bowen was on air - he didn’t say anything about responsibility

ZahzenEclipse ,

I think I just have to agree to disagree. It's a simple philosophy problem in my head

"Hospital got flattened"

"Hamas doesn't have munitions to flatten hospital"

"Israel flattened the hospital"

If you're reporting about a flattened hospital in Gaza, you're tactically supporting the idea Israel did it by simply reporting that a hospital got flattened. It also shouldn't suprise you that's how many people online ran with it.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

The report of a massive explosion outside the hospital would have lead the same people who made assumptions about Israel being responsible to assume that Israel was responsible.

ZahzenEclipse ,

Yeah it would lead neutral observers to beleive Israel flattened a hospital since they are the only ones immediately in the region with the munitions to do so. Both things can be true

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

But there was a massive explosion outside the hospital. Are you really saying that that shouldn’t have been reported with the caveat ‘we don’t know who is responsible’ because people would have assumed it was Israel ?

ZahzenEclipse ,

No, im saying the reporting the explosion in the parking lot of a hospital as "flattening the hospital" was irresponsible and it's no wonder it would make people think Israel blew it up by simply stating those things as facts. It was irresponsible to report it this way, especially since there was no evidence to suggest that was the case.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Yeh. We agree, he fucked up by making a hasty assumption about the hospital explosion, based on the drone footage he was seeing.

I’m saying that if he had reported accurately- a large explosion outside of the hospital - people would still have made the same assumption that Israeli action caused it.

ZahzenEclipse ,

You're probably right but I think the bigger issue is he can use cover of "well people would have ran with whatever narrative anyways so it's really not relevant to people jumping to that conclusion." In my opinion, we 100% should criticize him and recognize that it helped foster the sentiment it was an Israeli attack. Either way, the bigger issue is he doesn't think he did anything wrong reporting that way and I think thats a problem. Appreciate the back and forth.

HeartyBeast , (edited )
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Appreciate the back and forth.

Likewise. Thank you for making me think - I'm still pondering now.

Edit: If you want to see the source interview with Bowen, it's quite interesting. It's hear https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0gts7c1/behind-the-stories-on-the-front-line-jeremy-bowen - start at 14:30.

He's asked if he regrets anything he said that evening and he says no - then he's challenged on the "flattened" comment and he says "Oh yeh - well, I got that wrong. I was looking at the pictures .... and that was my conclusion looking at the pictures and I was wrong on that".

He basically comes across as pissed off that the Israeli's wont open the borders so that reporters can observe directly. But yes - he should have started with "that was a cockup on my part"

WidowsFavoriteSon ,

And Trump did not tell the traitors to stormthe building, amiright?

Jesus, the way you Hamas bootlickers refuse to listen to anything that disagrees with your agenda reminds me of the MAGA crowd. In fact it is the same thing, just on the left.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

I was correcting a factual inaccuracy. If you can find anything in my post history that suggests that I support Hamas, then feel free to point it out. Otherwise - zip it.

I am, however a fan of the BBC - and while it is far from perfect, I'm happy to defend it where the Telepgraph gets it wrong.

Akasazh , to world in The £1.5m fleet of electric vehicles the UK will send to Albania in prison deal
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

For those hitting the paywall:

A £1.5 million fleet of electric vehicles and minibuses purchased by the UK for Albania has been unveiled.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is providing 15 electric cars and 22 minibuses to help upgrade Albania’s prison service under a deal that will see 200 of the most violent criminals from the country returned to serve the rest of their time in Albanian jails.

It is part of a total €5 million (£4.4 million) to pay for refurbishing prisons, extra security, workshops, rehabilitation equipment and training of warders.

Britain is also paying a further £4 million a year to the Albanians to take back the prisoners, including 17 lifers.

Among those identified for return is Koci Selamaj, 36, the murderer of schoolteacher Sabina Nessa, 28. He was jailed for a minimum of 36 years for beating and strangling her to death in a park in south-east London.

He has so far served only two years, which would mean the UK paying the Albanians £400,000 to imprison him for the remaining 34 years of his sentence. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said the deal would save the taxpayer money, because it costs nearly £40,000 a year to house a prisoner in England and Wales. That would equate to some £1.9 million for Selamaj.

New details from government contracts, published this month, show that part of the multi-million pound deal is going towards kitting out the Albanian prison service with a new fleet of vehicles.

Around £500,000 has been spent on 15 electric vehicles, while 22 new minibuses will be provided to Albania’s prison service at a cost of more than £1 million.

The Government described the provision of electric vehicles as “part of the drive towards net zero and is part of a wider greening initiative”.

Announcing the arrangement in May, Alex Chalk, the Justice Secretary, said the “public expects that foreign criminals should serve their sentences overseas – not in our prisons at the expense of the taxpayer”.

He promised that the deal “will speed up the removal of these offenders and give victims confidence that serious criminals will continue to face justice and spend the remainder of their sentence behind bars”.

It seems to be less about the vaginas and more about how she was singing about watching a bunch of her exes die in horrible ways and placed in gaudy pastel coffins.

While provocative often means something salacious in common parlance, I think it's intended usage in this instance is more about provoking reaction. Admittedly I'm sure the editor who chose the title did want people to think it meant something more sexual in nature.
