I was thinking of the Honored Matres of the scattering, whom the bene gesserit despise largely because they rely on sexual manipulation rather than other forms of control and influence.
I probably should have specified that much of that is later in the series and not in the first book.
And that isn’t a description of the companions from firefly either? They were high society and sex was only a small part of what they did. But more importantly…they really didn’t do anything to override anyones free will?
Unless you mean yosafbridge? She had training but wasn’t really a companion
A major plot point is a group of women who can so expertly perform sexual favors that they completely override the free will of men.
Said it before and say it again. Dune only makes sense if you remember that every character you see is a product of multiple generations of incest, religious zealots, and useless idle royality.
The entire power of the Bene Gesserits could be defeated with 40 cents set of ear plugs, or hiring gay guys, or straight women, or deaf people, or straight men on libido blockers, or asexuals, or stubborn people, or people who speak a different language…
Their power is using sexy voice. Some random teenager with a slingshot is more dangerous.
Idk why but I always thought this was a Derrick Comedy vid. Kind of surprised now to realize it isn’t. If you like this and hadn’t heard of them, I recommend checking them out. Donald Glover (before Community) and his friends from the early days of YouTube. They had a hysterical movie too (Mystery Team).
Also wrong. If you compare two otherwise identical vehicles, the one with more power will both accelerate faster and have a higher top speed, assuming it has the gearing to use that power.
Stop getting all your vehicle knowledge from old top gear episodes.
To accelerate a vehicle we need to put kinetic energy into it and Power is the measure of how fast we can do that.
From a technical capability standpoint, torque is a useless measure. With a motor of a given power you can always gear it up or down to whatever torque you need (assuming a lossless transmission system).
If we take two identical trucks with 10k lb trailers on them and one's a 800ft-lb diesel and one's a 300ft-lb gas, both with 400hp, they sould realisticly accelerate and climb a hill at the same rate. The diference is the gas engine will be screaming at 6/7/8000 rpm and guzzling gas. (This also assumes no other factors like heat cone into play, the gas may not be able to maintain as much power due to cooling system designs or other factors).
Torquey-er engines also tend to feel better from a driveability standpoint but that's not representative of capability.
What? Torque tells you what force can be applied at what distance from the center of rotation. Acceleration is a function of mass and force. Of course more torque is going to get you to accelerate faster.
20 Hit points for a car isn’t much if we’re going by traditional RPG metrics, but I suppose I’m not sure what the creators were using as a template when they made it.
Depends on how traditional you want to get. The original metric was the number of 14" shells something could survive. Given that, 20 seems pretty good for a car.
We’re communicating instantaneously over a globe spanning computer network. In the early 90s that was not possible for the average joe. It was only in the very tail end of the decade that doing so didn’t require a fair amount of money and/or technical knowledge.
The network provides all of the information in every library on the planet to us instantaneously.
The world is on fire, fascism is on the rise, war is everywhere, prices are out of control, the future looks bleak as fuck, but yeah we have tictok… Woohoo…
I know there is a bit Internet belief that starship troopers is fascist but I’m not convinced.
Everyone is equal, free healthcare and education. They have an entry to vote so admittedly not everyone gets a vote. But absolutely anyone can choose to serve their government and by serving you automatically get a vote. Tbh I think there are arguments for that system. Once you get citizenship the system is completely democratic. They have propaganda but it is total war and which democracy hasn’t had propaganda during total war?
The book goes into it more and the book is a lot more serious and less campy. Verhoeven did try to twist it as much as possible which lost a lot but he still made a really entertaining movie.
Sorry for the late reply. I admit I haven’t read the book and thus can’t comment on it, but the movie is a great commentary on fascism, because it surprises us by making us notice that “Wait a second, I’m rooting for the fascists. How did that happen?!”. The visual messaging is pretty clear with the giant eagles, Hugo Boss leather uniforms and overall militarlism and xenophobia, but it goes much deeper than that.
Everyone gets free healthcare and education, as long as you’re part of ‘us’ instead of ‘them’. We’re used to the fascism where ‘us’ is some ethnic or religious group of humans and ‘them’ is some different group of humans. In starship troopers however, the fascism gets to fly under the radar by making the entirety of humanity the in-group. The aliens don’t need to be dehumanized because they’re quite clearly not human. Yet they feel fear and are only reacting to the spread of humans into their neighbourhood, while humans are outright shouting for genocide. “The only good bug is a dead bug!”
