autotldr Bot , to worldnews in China Evergrande seeks Chapter 15 protection in Manhattan bankruptcy court

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Evergrande’s filing comes amid growing fears that problems in China’s property sector could spread to other parts of the country’s economy as growth slows.

The health of Country Garden (2007.HK), China’s largest privately run developer, is also worrying investors after the company missed some interest payments this month.

Evergrande has said creditors may be able to vote this month on a restructuring, with possible approval by Hong Kong and British Virgin Islands courts in the first week of September.

Last month, Evergrande posted a combined $81 billion loss for 2021 and 2022, prompting investor worries about the viability of a debt restructuring plan it proposed in March.

On Monday, its electric-vehicle unit China Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group (0708.HK) announced its own proposed restructuring.

That plan called for a $2.7 billion debt-for-equity swap, and a nearly $500 million share sale that would give Dubai-based automaker NWTN (NWTN.O) a 27.5% stake.

Not a chance you replicate this number in a larger group that’s not their own poll. I think there are very much age and demographic issues.

An indictment in Georgia that is available as a public record includes the names of grand jurors but not their addresses or any other personally identifiable information.

I have a very unique name. I only know of one other person in the US that shares my first & last names & middle initial. He’s a distant relative about 20 years older than me. I would definitely not want my name shared this way as it would be fairly easy for nitjobs to track me down thanks to Google etc.

In other news, close to 100% of American adults are over the age of the target user group for TikTok.

Obviously, favoring a ban is a more political stance than just not using it yourself, but it’s still easy to call for bans, if you wouldn’t be affected.

I’m 43 and regularly use TikTok. I’ve learned about soap making, trans rights, d&d, and a million other things. It’s a great platform.

My largest issue with this whole article is the source of data. It is completely based on a survey taken on their own site. This means that they’re just feeding the readers their own preferences back to them.

RaoulDook , to technology in Close to half of American adults favor TikTok ban, Reuters/Ipsos poll shows

It’s already banned in all Federal facilities due to the fact that it’s an application with access to phone’s sensor hardware and it sends data to China, and the company’s corporate operations are overseen (and potentially directed) by the CCP

autotldr Bot , to technology in Close to half of American adults favor TikTok ban, Reuters/Ipsos poll shows

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Close to half of American adults support a ban on the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos survey that also asked questions about national security concerns and China.

The survey also revealed deep worries among Americans about China’s global influence at a time when U.S.-China relations have fallen to their lowest point in decades.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said in March that China’s government could use TikTok to control software on millions of devices and drive narratives to divide Americans, adding that the app “screams” of national security concerns.

Other top U.S. intelligence officials, including CIA Director William Burns, also have said TikTok poses a threat.

Former President Donald Trump in 2020 sought to bar new downloads of TikTok but a series of court decisions blocked the ban from taking effect.

Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has said he favors some form of national ban on the app.

Only 25%? The pound dumped to nearly a dollar earlier this year. It’s not just them, all money has been acting up lately. They’re lucky not to have it worse given that they’ve destroyed Russia’s long term economics with this war (not to mention centuries of harsh extractive economics and a long historical trend of resisting modernization)

addie ,

I wouldn’t really use the pound as a comparison for anything - we decided that committing economic suicide and abandoning free trade with our closest trading block was a small price to pay for being able to be mean to poor brown people. The reviews are coming in; would you believe that that was a stupid decision, and we’ve a stupid currency that’s not worth as much any more?

nogooduser ,

The “funny” thing is that we could be mean to poor brown people before as most of them aren’t from the EU. Although, now there’s talk about leaving the European human rights agreement so we can be really mean to them.

(It’s not really funny)

Fairly standard central bank activity, nothing unusual in and of itself.

bernieecclestoned ,

Except China is normally devaluing it’s currency to keep exports competitive, this is the opposite

abrasiveteapot ,

Sure, it’s been a while since China had to protect its currency from negative pressure, and it’s in reuters because it’s a clear market signal. However a softening economy isn’t unusual generally, just a first in decades for China.

It’s as much a sign that as a country they’re maturing past the developing country growth wave they’ve been on, and hitting the cycles that developed nations need to manage. Couple that with a trade war with the US slowing down key parts of the economy and it’s notable but not surprising.

Those predicting a wholesale economic collapse will however be just as disappointed as they were 12months ago when predicting a real estate lead crash.

Nope, its for everybody. McDonalds too. You can get a Maharaja Mac for one notable example. Localized menus exist for all the big chains that expand out.

Barbarian ,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

To piggy-back on what others have said, the big franchises absolutely do regionalize their menus. A BK/McDonalds/KFC here in Romania always has a strong garlic sauce as an option, because that’s a normal part of our cuisine. You won’t find that in the UK, for example.

Sometimes the differences are small, sometimes they’re large. All depends on how different the local cuisine is from US cuisine.

China’s demographics are irrecoverably screwed, there is quite literally no way back. Their population collapse began some years ago and the only thing it can do from here is gather speed. Literally every woman in the country between the ages of 16 and 45 could have three children, a totally laughable hypothetical, and it still wouldn’t be enough to stop it.

That’s official statistics too, there’s some work out there by Chinese Academics shows that it may actually be worse.

Its_not_Dave ,

China is not one to stand by and let things happen naturally if they need to speed things up

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

I’m not sure what your comment means exactly but I don’t see any way out of the demographic hole that they’re in. Fixing it would require continued forced impregnation of every eligible citizen for at least the next decade and opening up their immigration to levels well beyond anything they’ve ever allowed. I strongly doubt that Chinese citizens would tolerate the forced impregnation tactic and who the hell would immigrate knowing that it was a requirement?

alternative_factor ,
@alternative_factor@kbin.social avatar

Couldn't they just allow immigration? I get that most people don't want to move to China anymore but it would probably help. I also know they won't but would immigration work in a vacuum?

LufyCZ ,

Might not work, but they need every set of you hands they can get, so it’d help, at least a bit…

qtj ,

I think a big problem would be population size. China has about the same population as all of Africa. So the question would be where immigrants should come from. I imagine to be helpful china would probably have to become a popular destination for migrants from all of Africa and Asia at a very large scale.
