"Even tomatoes need a vacation ... we are unable to add tomatoes to our food," read notices pasted at two Burger King India outlets.

So you’re telling me even Schrödinger’s fruit/vegetable gets more vacation time than me?

Isn’t ketchup considered a vegetable in Burgerland?

    NovaPrime ,
    @NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

    It’s not

    chatokun ,

No, it’s a vegetable smoothie, get it right.

    Damage ,

Tomato sauce is produced in the hot months, sterilized, and stored in large aseptic containers to be used all year long, or more. This summer’s inflation isn’t inside the sauce yet.

    kbotc ,

Tomatoes also ship like crap, so the stuff coming online in America and Mexico right now is not going to be served in India in any way shape or form.

    Corkyskog ,

Even when tomatoes are supposed to be in season they are somehow still shipped unripe to supermarkets.

    Brahm1nmam ,

The unripe ones are firmer and can handle long truck rides a bit better

    Franfran2424 ,

they dont produce with FRESH tomatoes.

plus half of it is oil.

philomory , to news in Maui tourism, an economic mainstay, sparks anger amid fire ruin

It’s a tough problem, sorta damned if you do, damned if you don’t. In my view (as a long-time resident but not a Hawai’i native), having some number of tourists in the coming months is probably necessary, but people obviously shouldn’t be going anywhere near Lahaina right now.

MattyXarope , to world in Burger King says tomatoes on 'vacation' as India battles food inflation

I swear, it seems like getting a decent tomato is impossible nowadays. They’re all refridgerated and horrible, completely bland.

    JackBruh ,

Expect it to increase for other vegetables as well as climate gets worse.

    tiredofsametab ,

Mini-/Cherry tomatoes are pretty easy to grow in pots and don't take much space. They can also be quite delicious. I started growing them a few years ago and haven't stopped.

    MattyXarope ,

Yeah, honestly cherry tomatoes are the only ones that I find have any kind of discernable flavor nowadays.

    Franfran2424 ,

    SWEET

    Franfran2424 ,

cherries still have some taste, and garden or ecological options still have flavour.

yetAnotherUser , to worldnews in North Korea says Travis King wants refuge from mistreatment, racism in US

King, who joined the U.S. Army in January 2021, faced two allegations of assault in South Korea, and eventually pleaded guilty to one instance of assault and destroying public property for damaging a police car during a profanity-laced tirade against Koreans, according to court documents. He was due to face more disciplinary measures when he arrived back in the United States.

It’s just a hunch, but I believe he has more experience with racism than he’s willing to admit.

    Zippy ,

Ya he likely was making racists remarks about the Koreans.

    Damn, that sucks.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

NEW DELHI/CHENNAI, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Burger King has scrapped tomatoes from its wraps and burgers in many Indian outlets after prices more than quadrupled, the latest symptom of surging food inflation that is hitting consumers hard across the world’s most populous nation.

Rival Domino’s (DPZ.N), meanwhile, has tried bringing down prices to appeal to struggling consumers with a $0.60 pizza - its cheapest in the world.

Restaurant Brands Asia (RESR.NS), which operates Burger King in India, did not respond to requests for comment.

The pain is spreading with July retail inflation data released this week showing prices of vegetables rose 37% over a year.

As well as placing pressure on the margins of foreign chains operating in India’s nearly $5 billion market for fast-food restaurants, the price shocks pose a challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government ahead of a national election next year.

To manage the supply crisis, India has started tomato imports from Nepal, and has organised vans to distribute the staple at cheaper rates across the nation, with social media posts showing huge queues.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The BHRRC has tracked allegations of workers’ rights abuses in Myanmar garment factories since the military junta took power, plunging the country into political and humanitarian crisis.

The decision by Inditex to cut ties with Myanmar suppliers came after Primark (ABF.L) and Marks & Spencer (MKS.L) announced plans to exit last year, in a trend that some say could ultimately leave garment workers worse off.

Spanish fashion retailer Tendam also plans to stop sourcing from Myanmar, it said in its response to a BHRRC survey of brands published alongside the report.

Primark told Reuters it expects its final orders from Myanmar suppliers to ship before the end of this year, but has also increased its presence on the ground.

H&M, Bestseller, and Tendam are among 18 brands forming part of the European Union-funded MADE project aimed at improving labour conditions in Myanmar’s garment factories.

The EU’s stance is that companies should continue sourcing from Myanmar, where the garment industry is a key employer, with more than 500 factories producing clothes and shoes for big brands.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Aug 16 (Reuters) - A scientist at Harvard used Google’s cloud platform to clone a supercomputer for a heart disease study, in a novel move that other researchers could follow to get around a shortage of powerful computing resources and speed up their work.

The study simulated a therapy that aims to dissolve blood clots and tumor cells in the human circulatory system that required an enormous amount of computing power that typically can be harnessed with a supercomputer, according to Harvard professor Petros Koumoutsakos.

In the U.S., there are only a handful of supercomputers that are capable of running the billions of calculations to accurately mimic the conditions in Koumoutsakos’s study.

To eliminate the bottlenecks researchers and companies such as Citadel that need an enormous amount of computing resources only found in supercomputers have begun to turn to the public cloud.

They are designed for millions of individual, relatively small computing tasks - things such as streaming video, serving webpages or database access.

Modifying cloud infrastructure to behave like a supercomputer requires changes in the software, networking and physical design of the hardware, Magro said.
