That’s awesome, how many records is that? I’ve got about 800, but yours clearly dwarves that!

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

About 2000 albums, plus 200-300 45s, 100 or so CDs, and about 50 78s.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Fantastic. Most of mine is singles (mostly house/techno, very different from yours I would think!) but I do love an LP now and then as well.

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

like 12 inch singles or 45s? Don’t know of a lot of house or techno singles that are not on 12-inch.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

12s, although many of them are at 45rpm anyway.

I do have maybe 50 7"s, mostly just random stuff from charity shops, a Beatles song here, a Dylan song there.

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

In terms of 45s, I try to collect and punk/post punk/new wave records I can find, and I also try to look for rockabilly, blues, soul, funk, doo wop, and more.

In terms of artists, I’m trying to look for every 60s Rolling Stones records, including the picture sleeves (although the Street Fighting Man sleeve will probably stay out of my collection, as its over $20,000 and I prefer keeping all of my limbs).

sanguinepar , (edited )
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Lol! $20,000? That’s crazy.

I’ve just been scrolling through your collection, and thanks again for sharing, it was a real treat to see it all. So much great stuff, plus the odd nice surprise when I found something I have too (great to see Into the Valley by The Skids there!)

Was especially impressed by your collection of James Brown singles, that’s very cool. And I love that you have Radio Free Europe by R.E.M., plus all those early LPs - I have Document, but nothing earlier than that.

Fabulous stuff, really enjoyed seeing such a wonderful collection. Here’s to your next 1000! :-)

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s $20,000 because the sleeve has pictures of police arresting and stepping over beaten protestors, and was released days before or after the 1968 Democratic convention riots, which made it controversial and therefore was withdrawn. I am probably even lowballing that price, its so rare.

Thank you for liking my collection. I tend to collect all over the place, so there might be some oddball stuff in there.

And thanks for liking the James Brown collection. I try to get every record I can get from him due to the sheer breadth of records he released and to see the development over time of his music.

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Do rabbitholes belong here? I’m a full on spelunker of them, but I fail to see how they align with this community as it’s geared towards tips and tricks.

Rabbitholes, to me at least, are those bits of mental lint that don’t really serve a purpose other than to expand your knowledge base. Their depths can vary, but are typically very complex (deep) in nature. Like the fall of the Ottoman Empire or some shit like that. Does it influence your day to day functioning? no. Is it interesting? yes.

I think by "here" OP meant the fediverse in general, hence "an interesting topic and the right community". I would guess this is just encouraging people to post more in general (which I appreciate as I was mostly a lurker for my 13 years on Reddit)

One of the things I’ve enjoyed about lemmy; posts/comments feel far more engaging and don’t get drowned in thousands of comments that often don’t contribute much if anything.

Awesome collection! What’s your favorite album that you have on vinyl? Do you have anything super rare?

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

Favorite album on vinyl is probably either Modest Mouse’ Lonesome Crowded West or the Clash London Calling.

I have accumulated a few rarities over the years and I’ll show some below:

My Copy of Orange Juice’s Falling and Laughing with the flexi and postcard (only 934 copies made, 200 with the postcard)

pensivepangolin ,

I have to say I’m insanely jealous of you having a copy of Lonesome Crowded West! That’s a dream score for me!

From your comments on here, sounds like you have a phenomenal collection!

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a reissue, but I’d love to have an original 1997 copy of the album on Up records.

pensivepangolin ,

Ahhhh, I got you. As a novice collector with almost only reissues, I’d be happy just for a reissue of that album; I’m not even sure how many times I’ve played it end to end!

why are so many lemmy.ml users not active compared to .world or beehaw?

Zapafaz ,

lemmy.ml is very old, because it’s run by the devs of lemmy.

ghostBones ,

Beehaw has a number of news and politics communities. As one might imagine, there’s livelier debates and discussion and lots of new things to discuss almost every day.

I’m going to use the past tense here. Reddit was more than anything a news feed, at least originally. I suspect that their early days created a lot of momentum around politics, national and world news, since they are naturally bountiful sources of content.

Sick collection! How are they organized? Do you play all new arrivals before they’re filed into the rack?

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

They are organized alphabetically by first name, and in order of release, even down to the month if multiple releases came out in one year.

I always play new arrivals when I get them. When I bring stuff home, I go on discogs and catalog them in my collection, so i have a day-by-day note of what albums I got, and I play the albums to check condition.

@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

ryuundo OP ,

Yeah, I’m close to getting every record from them. I’m just missing the Japan-only live album from 1972 and most of the 80s albums.

also thanks for liking the collection. anything else stick out to you?

okfuskee ,
@okfuskee@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t gone through it all yet, but one thing that I generally like is how eclectic your collection is.

My dad was constantly playing Beach Boys. I put on a song once in a while to remind me of him and his horrible singing voice. (Haha)

But I also remember being a kid and seeing Iron Maidens Eddie and thinking how bad ass he was. My uncle was a huge fan and would always spin their music.

Lots of punk… but also not afraid to branch out and appreciate great musicians. I’ve seen a few large collections, but they were kinda just in one lane as if all this other wonderful music didn’t exist.

ryuundo OP ,
@ryuundo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I don’t try to block myself into one singular focus of genre. I mainly go for punk and new wave stuff, but I also like 60s soul, doo wop, 20s-30s country and blues, jazz, Brazilian music and all other types of genres. I’ve been digging for 7 years now and the discoveries I’ve made would have never happened without record collecting (like how else would I learn about New Zealand indie rock without digging through discogs to find out about it?)

Tweakers.net, which is pretty much the biggest techsite in the Netherlands, has an article about it aswell. You can be sure this is very real.

Bongles ,

I imagine it’s like how you might use tinker.

vaultdweller013 ,

So it means sonething more along the lines on tinkerer or old school hacking got it.

Daftman ,

It’s along the lines of tuner / or like vaultdweller said tinkerer. The name is from late 90’s. It started as World of Tweaking when overclocking and tuning your pc was seen as destroying your hardware and hacking the plannet (31337 H4X0R).

Site started somewhere 1997 and 1999 or so. By now it’s a very common site in the Netherlands to check hardware and software related stuff, especially since every computer related shop has a presence in the pricewatch the website offers for the Dutch and Belgian market.

The website is extremely comparable to Tom’s Hardware website.
