The best way for the Reddit community to fight back is to leave to another community. In order for that to happen the Fediverse options have to keep growing and improving, like they are, so that people leaving feel comfortable knowing they have a good option. Reddit will be dead in 6 months.

A better version of the SRA that hasn't been taken over by the PSL

Someone explain please, I'm curious.

animist ,

The SRA is the Socialist Rifle Association. It started out as a group of all flavors of leftists (anarchists, MLs, demsocs and everything in between) working together to create a positive gun culture for leftism and to train people to defend their communities and themselves during the rise of the alt-right and Donald Trump-style fascism in the States.

However, many branches of the PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation, a strongly ML political party in the States) decided that the SRA was the perfect vehicle for them and so instructed their members who were also members of the SRA to do everything they could to push out the anarchists and demsocs. Now it is just another branch of the PSL.

grus ,

instructed their members who were also members of the SRA to do everything they could to push out the anarchists and demsocs

HA. At least they're keeping it historically consistent.
Hurr durr muh leftist unity, hurr durr.

Thanks for the explanation, I appreciate it!

animist ,

yep, tankies never change

I’m not American myself and this was just explained by a few American friends of mine who were formerly in the SRA and even had leadership roles in their chapters; one was a demsoc and two were anarchists. In my own country there are almost no MLs; they came to power back in the 60s and 70s as part of our national liberation but then they just ended up being power hungry, as all MLs eventually become (or were in the first place). Nobody has faith in them anymore so anybody who is leftist is pretty much anarchist or at least demsoc.

And anybody who praises the government of North Korea has absolutely zero moral high ground on which to stand

I’m not one of these guys masturbating over my dream revolution or anything, but armed minorities are harder to oppress, and are less tempting targets for individual or group violence.

I’m a queer guy in Portland. There are violent extremists in my town who want to kill me, and are organizing and rallying. I’ve seen them in the streets, and they’ve attacked people and places I care about because they know that the left wing is broadly non-violent, and that cops are on their side.

Looking at the political climate in the US, I don’t think it’s too unreasonable of a reaction to buy a gun and learn to defend yourself, just in case.

Its pretty funny - I learned this the last 2 years I was to own a gas operated car. I had always struggled with certain models on which side the gas tank was and would embarrassingly have to switch stalls when I came out to realize I was on the wrong side.

Now I just have to remember what side my charging port is on, passengers get the zap is how I remember

LOL, same here. Most of the time I knew, but in a rental car or something, I could never remember...

My charging port is in the front center now--and this is causing me problems with some street chargers because I can't get the cable far enough over. There's no arrow for that....

    Saturdaycat ,
    @Saturdaycat@kbin.social avatar

Ohh yeah that can be such a pain to maneuver on a street, that really sucks and I didn't think about that pain point with front charging cars! A leaf?

Yah, Leaf 2016 model. I got ticketed by the city for parking the wrong direction. I tried to explain to them that they chose to site the charger in a way that caused this problem, but they said they didn't care and don't do it....

I’m just shocked at how bad that offer is, 6 dollars a month just for ad free browsing? Damn. All the other “benefits” seem completely worthless to me.

    drlecompte ,

I used to be a Reddit premium subscriber, because I used Reddit a lot and I wanted to support them. Silly me.

    dax ,

If Reddit wasn’t going downhill I wouldn’t mind paying to not see ads - if it helps keep the site running. But 6$/mo is very excessive for what is essentially a forum + link aggregator.

Disney+ for comparison isn’t much more expensive and I feel that I get a lot more value out of that, not to mention streaming isn’t cheap.

DarthRedLeader , to maliciouscompliance in r/steam (maliciously) complies with the call to open again

I think these malicious compliance subreddit responses are as fun as the next person, but honest question: doesn’t this work out in Reddit’s favor? They don’t care what’s posted as long as content is being generated and traffic being driven to their site, right?

    Aurix OP ,

There is the nuance to it. The subscribers did not sign up for this initially. Therefore they will have to build a new community up which certainly won’t have as many subscribers for a very long time and none of the post history.

At the same time posts actually asking about the Steam platform get downvoted heavily and thus dissuade further interaction.

Effectively the sub becomes useless, just the same as if it had stayed closed. It will drop in engagement in the long term.

The John Oliver memes attract more mainstream attention and clearly signal to investors the platform is not healthy, irrespective of the traffic it causes.

With more and more subreddits joining in on this, the All page gets flooded with shitposts annoying everyone. Those who stay certainly won’t want to deal with this all the time and unsubscribe.

Of course group dynamics are unpredictable at times, but reddit is certainly more in turmoil than whatever traffic.

    DarthRedLeader ,

Thanks, I was missing that point of view but I see what you mean.

I guess the way I see it is that, right now, people are enthusiastically joining in, which is still driving a sense of community. I guess I’m not as convinced that, long term, people will be driven to make new communities. I feel like the more likely scenario is that people will grow bored and go back to their normal, everyday posting.

Edit: I do agree the invester point is definitely one I didn’t consider and is definitely a huge factor to all of this. Of course, it goes without saying that it at least signals the turmoil at Reddit and brings more attention to it. Not all press is good press in this case.

Whatever happens, I fully intend to sit back and enjoy watching the drama unfold.

    orclev ,

I feel like the more likely scenario is that people will grow bored and go back to their normal, everyday posting.

I think it’s more likely people will get bored and just stop going to reddit. Right now the ones taking part in the protest are the creators and hard core users, while the casual users either aren’t taking part or are just not using reddit right now.

Longer term this will destroy reddit on google searches ruining one of the major drivers of traffic.

In the short term it’s a question of if the casual users get tired first and stop going to reddit, or the hard core users get bored of trolling spez. If the former happens first then reddits non-troll traffic dies off and when the hard core users get bored and leave and then there will be almost nobody left.

Ultimately in order for the protesters to win they don’t need to permanently destroy reddit, just to effectively shut it down for the next 6 months or so as literally this entire thing, both the changes reddit instituted and the backlash, is about the IPO. Spez was looking to pump the value quickly so he could cash out and so he went with some incredibly aggressive and anti-user policies that he hoped would generate a massive revenue spike and look good to investors. Instead the users are giving spez a boot to the teeth and reminding him that he has nothing without them.

    Chailles ,
    @Chailles@lemmy.world avatar

    ramennoodle ,

r/pics held a poll and their users CHOSE the john oliver memes. other subs are doing something similar, giving ‘go back to normal’ as an option because otherwise the admins might just remove them anyway for not giving users a real choice.

    Furbag ,

Not really. The traffic they’re getting from it is unsustainable and any would-be investor who is paying attention will notice this. This is really more a tactic to shatter the narrative that the mods do not represent the will of the general user and they are forcing the protests onto them.

    chris ,

Would they? I’d assume they’re getting most of their info from spaz, who will just point to the dip and then “see, number go up.”

    scutiger ,

IPO’s are risky for the investor. If the company is overvalued before the IPO, a huge chunk of money invested disappears almost immediately as the stock drops. So the big investors will be doing their research before putting their money in.

Only on holidays. If I pick up some furniture, I don’t bother, but when I’m driving for one or two days straight with 4 people and luggage in the car, yes definitely. It helps that I can check/adjust my tire pressure where I wash my car every two weeks. I’m really particular about the handling of my car and the tires I drive on, so I’m always on top of the correct pressure.

meowthschwitz , to workreform in And where did the share of profits go?

I’m guessing quality of life has increased faster than wages.

    juusukun ,

By what scale? Medieval peasants only had to pay 10% in taxes and got sooooo much free time. Technology even today is still bad for us, but nature and free time? Come on, what’s the point of having all these gadgets and what not if we don’t have the time to use them, and they’re all run by faceless corporations who make things as addictive and monetized as possible?

Productivity. That’s what you want to compare to wages, and it has definitely increased faster than wages, so why aren’t the workers being paid proportionately to their increased productivity?

    meowthschwitz ,

Productivity improves the value of the basket of goods that we all consume.

    juusukun ,

    …uh okay?

So back to my questions, by what scale?

Care to have a conversation and not just repeat random excerpts you read from a textbook?

So tell me, how exactly are we expected to consume all those goods in that basket that are used to measure inflation, when we are not paid in proportion to our increased productivity? Do those goods just pay for themselves with wages we do not receive?

    meowthschwitz ,

I’m just sharing my experience. I don’t have any data to back up my statements, sorry.

    juusukun ,

Experience? If you say so, again just sounds like you’re quoting a textbook.

If you’re referring to experience all the way back to your quality of life comment, how old are you? Quality of life has definitely dropped since baby boomers were in their 20s and 30s and 40s

Sure we have netflix, we’re all interconnected and have instant access to information on the internet, but we can’t raise a family on a single income, we can’t pay off college or university with a single year of a summer job

    meowthschwitz ,

What textbook? I’m just some guy on the Internet.

In what way has quality of life dropped? We wouldn’t be having this conversation 10 years ago. I enjoy being able to experience an open source platform such as Lemmy, from my smartphone while getting drunk and lounging about at home. I couldn’t have done that without advancements in technology. I feel like that improves my quality of life at no cost. An example of how my life is improved, regardless of wages.

I’m paying devils advocate. I’m all for wages increasing for the average person. I just want people the feel happy for all the amazing things we have in our modern world.
