the potential customers that would already point their finger at you screaming “shame” if they saw you do business with people they dislike? Good riddance.
Even if you go by voting numbers in the only election he actually won (and even that wasn’t by popular vote), it WAS closer to ⅓, and that was SEVEN YEARS AGO. I’d wager quite a few who called themself a supporter back then have changed their minds since. They’re just not speaking up about it, and so the perception is skewed.
Well… it’s worth noting that (IIRC) a record number of people voted in the 2020 election, overall and for each major-party candidate. Are those who chose to vote for Trump not to be counted among “Trump supporters”? It was approximately (but decidedly not quite) half of voters.
Yes, but I was highlighting the disparity between “active voters” and “Americans in general”, and between them and now. Saying half of the country supports Trump simply isn’t factually true.
Now, whether people who don’t vote should even be part of the conversation is another debate, of course.
They are federated instances. Lemmy is part of the Fediverse, which means distributed servers running the same service (or services) and registering in one instance gives you access to information on the other servers running Lemmy. You can have different communities (‘subreddits’) in different servers but they are all accessible and joinable. This way is not a centralised system.
The Fediverse is not just Lemmy, can be other services like Mastodon, etc.
And the servers all* communicate with each other, so you can see content from one server while logged into another (the URL format would just be slightly different.)
Well, except for the cases where a server admin decides to defederate from another server for one reason or another.
No, federation means we all see the same content regardless of which site we sign up on with the exception of sites that yours may block.
But be wary that lemmy.ml is a tankie instance and the “.ml” stands for Marxism-Leninism. I generally avoid lemmy.ml communities so I don’t get banned for saying “the uyghur genocide is a real thing” or anything.
No worries, .ml is in fact the official domain of the state of Mali. It’s just the interpretation of this single domain owner what he wants to stand “ml” for.
The large instances usually subscribe to most of the others but not every instance is equal. You should go to other instances (you don’t have to join) and check their “all” feeds. You’ll definitely see differences.
There are just certain instances that I wouldn’t want to see, like foreign language ones?
New to the fediverse, so perhaps I’m not thinking about this correctly, but if could blacklist a whole instance, rather than certain magazines/subs/whatever they are called, it would be easier than playing a game of wack-a-mole.
Whatever the number, I’ve definitely noticed in the past few days that there are getting to be enough people having conversations and posting content for this place to feel like a legit community instead of a ghost town. I’m really glad to see more people joining and taking part.
Agreed. It’s really nice to see top posts having a lot of thoughtful engagement. Hopefully we’ll have enough to start seeing people branching out to smaller niche communities too.
It’s been amazing to feel like we’re part of something that’s growing so fast. I’ll miss Reddit but I expect Lemmy will fill in the role sooner rather than later.
I peeked around a bit with Connect (android) for a while, and the things that stood out the most to me was the small size and sluggishness of the whole thing. BUT what also stuck out far more were pins of maintenance because of growth & updates of constant hard work to increase performance, and an interface that (while slightly jank) is infinitely superior to the official reddit app. It’s good to see continued growth, especially in such a welcoming community. The problems are providing to be simple growing pains and it’s great to be here.
I’m using Connect app too for now. Ateast until Sync for Lemmy is ready! Connect isn’t terrible by any means. Though I haven’t received a reply or DM yet so I’m not sure if background updates are working.
I’ve been juggling jerboa, connect, liftoff, and thunder while I decide which one I like best. For like 90% of things, it’s liftoff, but some of my subscribed communities show as blank and I’m forced to use one of the others…
So true. I planted a redwood at my grandma’s place when I was 6, and it got too big for the soil it was in and just topped one day. Luckily didn’t take out her house but it was a huge mess.
The rose bush has done really well this year, producing a huge number of flowers. I dead-headed it at the weekend and I am expecting a second flowering later in the year.
One of our bushes appears to have died. I gave it a good prune in October and I think that’s what went and killed it. I checked a few branches and they were bone dry. I need to check the main trunk and see if there is any life left in it or if I should bite the bullet and pull it out.
Our buddleia has grown so voraciously that it has collapsed in the windy weather we have had over the last few days. I didn’t prune it back enough in the spring.
Given the… frankly absurd rate at which people are signing up to servers, and subscribing to other servers, and posting and commenting and upvoting and…
I mean it’s getting a bit hairy, and user growth was already following a very steep growth curve.
