More specifically look up the term “ablaut reduplication”. There’s lots of great articles and honestly some pretty good YouTube videos on the subject. I’m honestly surprised how great the YouTube linguistics scene is, from Tom Scott’s language files to rob words and name explain (plus nativlang). Hours of infotainment on linguistics for those interested!
I’d love to see some more clear tracking of where all the posts are. Not sure how best to find it. Seems like I just go to every instance and have to look through their list of communities to see it.
You can sort by posts, comments, subscribers, etc. plus other useful filters. It’s currently the best tool for finding active communities - especially if you’re on a smaller instance.
It’s useful because it shows numbers across all instances - not just in relation to your own.
You can see that some of the top communities are not English speaking, which may be why you don’t see them in your feed.
This is reminiscent of when I was first on Hotmail back in the 90’s. I remember getting an email from the Hotmail team when they first hit a million subscribers… They were bought out by Microsoft within the year… My username is my original Hotmail address.
Who needs that in their life? If your product can’t stand on its own merit and you need to bathe swaths of the general public with nonsense to sell anything then maybe your product deserves to fail?
I’d rather a service be funded by ads, because if not, they’ll have to find some other way to make money, which could include:
Paywalling - I won’t use it then.
Selling your personal information egregiously - I don’t mind when a company has the information I give them, but if they’re relying on selling it as their primary income, it’s probably going to lead to something shady.
Cryptocurrency mining - I don’t want my computer to heat up while I’m trying to watch YouTube videos, as I often do that to let my computer cool down between games.
I went hiking in the Amalfi coast last spring - it's one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.
Walking through Agerola late at night only to stumble upon possibly the best pizza I have ever had (Punto Pizza) was a huge bonus. I want to go back there for the pizza alone.
