I’m surprised so much money is going towards disability, what kind of stuff do they get?

hanni ,

Helpers, workers, special housing, apecial Beds and equipment. Some have 24/7 care.

hanni ,

Some need 24/7 care. Not sure what people in australia are getting.

Jolan ,

Yeah that makes sense I guess, I just wasn’t expecting it to be so much. But that’s good that there’s such a good support structure available.

crossover ,

My guess is this is mostly support payments for people who are unable to work.

billstickers ,
@billstickers@aussie.zone avatar

What @hanni said. But they also split out the unemployment payment as the disability support payment. So it’s all the disabled pension too.

t0lo ,

Australian support services can be quite broad. I know a lot of people with minor or self diagnosed issues that receive disability payments

birbboidaseed ,

There is a whole department dedicated to the assessment and allocation of funding for the disabled under 65 y.o. If you’re over 65 then it became the aged pension.

Trolled , to mildlyinteresting in in Australia, when we pay taxes, we get a receipt. The receipt shows what our taxes were spent on

I love that it helps you see how little of the welfare payments are going to the unemployed, since that’s the part that concerns people the most.

Agent641 OP ,

Indeed, especially since I am quite unconcerned about the Aged. They had their chance!

Deez ,

That’s a newer addition, when it first came out under a conservative Goverment, all welfare was grouped together.

Risk ,

Classic Conservative tactic.

“Evil, stupid, greedy-” stuffs pockets “-jobless, welfare scroungers!” stuffs pockets “Pensioners, vote for me to bring down our welfare spending!”

Z3k3 ,

Uk government tried this a few yrs ago trying to spin the welfare part as work shy bambots then it came out that the lions share was pension pots that took up most of it with the teachers pensions being the one the media focused on

ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

The US has a similar breakdown by % as this Australian one, except that what’s called “welfare” in Australia is called “entitlements” in the US and makes up about 50% of the budget. Welfare in terms of the dole aka money given to “work shy bambots” makes up only about half of one percent.

kep , to technology in Advertising revenue in Twitter crashes by 50%

Nobody is talking about it, but does that advertising exec that Musk hired for CEO take a massive hit to her career for any of this?

It seems surreal to have a ghost CEO who isn’t responsible for anything such a large company does. But that’s exactly what’s happening here.

offbyone ,

Maybe, but there’s a market out there for CEOs who are willing to take the blame for some unpopular decisions and then walk away. There’s also something to be said that “-50%” might actually be an improvement over where it was before she was hired, and the bad decisions weren’t hers.

kep ,

But that’s the thing. She isn’t taking the L on this. That’s my point. She seems to just be chillin’, doing fuck all. Everyone knows it’s Musk running it.

This isn’t a case where he needed to bring in a fall guy CEO for a difficult business choice. This is a case where he brought in a new CEO to literally save the corporation, and she’s doing nothing and nobody is blaming her. It’s surreal.

Why are these Temperatures only since 1979?

Serinus ,

To make it easier to see the graph. I hope you’re not implying anything else.

WarmSoda ,

They obviously don’t want us to know what really happened in '78!! The truth cannot be hidden any longer, open your eyes people! The cries of the carrots! The cries of the carrots!

JudahBenHur ,

I dont know, I remember my dad saying “what a scorcher” in 1978 (or so he told me later when I was both alive and could understand spoken language) so you never know, you never never know

the fact that the only places in the world that have people who even want to continue to live in denial are the US, UK and Australia cough Murdoch’s* cough makes me want to go outside and lie in a pile of wet leaves

I’m aware you didnt ask, but I heard an interview with some asshole from Florida yesterday and he said “I’m against this whole globalist shit!” and I thought for a moment what an alien or even say god would make of someone saying “one species? humanity? NO- this one group here, this is us and they are them”… and it just became so clear to me, once again, that people who can’t move beyond the idea of tribes are just simply less evolved than other people, and as little as natural evolution is still functioning, I’m hoping against hope that it still works a little, and the more intellectually developed will leave the less developed behind.

while I’m dreaming, I’d also like an infinite bank account thank you

Notyou ,

Interesting stream of consciousness. I agree with the whole tribalism will kill us all concept. Especially when resources get more scare, people start migrating, people then start blaming migrants for the lack of resources, then nationalism grows and we get more tribal.

xkcd.com/1732/Check out the xkcd graph if you want to see the data for global temperatures dating back through 1978, just in case you wanted to know the temp for what “a scorcher” meant. This graph goes up to 2016 with projections for the future, so even this graph isn’t a complete pic. I am sure if you add to 2023 then line would move more to the right.

JudahBenHur ,

I’m suprised my gushing sarcasm didnt come through… my dad didn’t say 78 was “a scorcher” at all, just riffing. probably should include the /s thing more often

Notyou ,

Ahh. Sure is a scorcher today, Wally. Yeah I think sarcasm is the hardest to read, especially through text. It makes sense now. Thanks.

dangblingus ,

Your dad’s anecdotal perception of heat in 1 localized area of the planet isn’t going to provide the larger, global average temperature.

brimnac ,

whoooooosh…

JudahBenHur ,

thank you

Stilicho ,

I think the tribalism thing you mention is more inherent self interest than actual stupidity. “If other people somewhere else are worse off, who cares as long as they are making your shoes and smartphones” type of deal.

SCB ,

People making your shoes and smartphones are better off than if they werent, which is what people against globalism often don’t want.

They want those people to stay poor for America (or wherever) First.

Mayoman68 ,

But their countries are only poor because of the imperialism of rich countries for centuries. You’re saying they should be grateful for rich economies helping them develop, when those rich economies are the reason they are poorer to begin with.

SCB ,

That’s certainly one way to look at people choosin to not be subsistence farmers

Mayoman68 ,

I am not talking about individual choices but rather the social factors influencing those choices, please read a history book

JudahBenHur ,

No, I agree with that, but I believe that inability to think beyond “I got mine” belies a lack of intellect, or education, or both.

Stilicho ,

Yes, but generally an economic welfare is derived from exploiting other countries in one way or another. If you aren’t willing to act on such moral depravity, someone else will be and outcompete you. People are able to justify anything to themselves morally, so the “I got mine” attitude makes sense to any sociopath out there.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

We have them here in Canada too. Though we do get Murdoch shit by proxy from the US, I think a large factor is simply people’s emotional attachment to the ICE.

I’ve seen it with all kinds of technology. People are experts in some obsolete technology and refuse to adapt to the new technology because it means their knowledge will be useless.
