Actually it’s Programing, although that’s not really much better.

One time I’ve tried to do it and it is not fun. I guess I’ll stick with pleb init.vim for now.

I prefer the term Software Engineererer, myself

hardypart ,

Software engineering is not only the programming part, though.

Not about preference. More of terminologies and their right appropriation

How the hell did this get 183 upvotes, it’s literally just a white dot

EDIT: omg I get it now

That’s how I know I chose the right instance!

PersnickityPenguin , to fediverse in Second largest Lemmy instance preemptively un-friends Facebook

Yeah, the problem here as I see it is that just the same as Twitter, this social media service is still owned by a single owner corporation who is running the service for a profit and they will eventually sell user data or bastardize the service. Ive been on the internet for 30 years, social media and websites come and go and so does their popularity.

Which raises another point, how are the bills being paid for with any of these services, including lemmy? TAANSTAFL.

The hope is with user donations. As far ad I know every instance is losing money though.

Guatch ,

I moved here from Reddit my I have 3 boxes to check off before I can commit to a home for social media. A community that rivals Reddit which is tough to do. They are some of the snarkiest bastards alive, decentralized of which Lenny gets kinda right, but ultimately someone owns this server, and that’s pretty centralized, and open source to avoid social media for profit. I haven’t found one out probably 69, or so that I’ve tried. If someone were to check all those boxes they’d eventually blow the top off of social media.

Moonrise2473 , to technology in Linux Desktop Market share reaches 3.08%

Could it dramatically rise after 2025 when Windows 10 reaches EOL?

There are millions and millions of very powerful computers unable to run windows 11 because the Microsoft marketing department decided so

somedev ,

Not likely. There has been plenty of opportunities, Windows Xp, Windows 7, etc - there was no dramatic rise.

Moonrise2473 ,

Yes but almost any old PC made in the last two decades can be upgraded to windows 10. Even an athlon64 from 2003, can run it, if it has enough RAM. The same can’t be said for windows 11, which accepts only the newest processors

pattmayne ,

I don’t remember there being a similar CPU generation cutoff before. Your 7th gen intel laptop cannot install windows 11. So Linux is your only choice.

MazonnaCara89 ,
@MazonnaCara89@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes but most of the people don’t care, out there are still people running windows xp and 7 without thinking twice about it

pattmayne ,

I expect there are very few people running 7, and waaaay less running xp. I think most people have upgraded to 10 or 11 by now.

MazonnaCara89 ,
@MazonnaCara89@lemmy.ml avatar

Windows 7 had 10.25% desktop market share on November 2022

alehel ,

I honestly think it’s more likely they will continue to run Win 10, but without updates.

sacredbirdman , to technology in Linux Desktop Market share reaches 3.08%

I run Linux on all home computers, MacOS on work devices… if AMD’s 8x40 APU turns out about as good as it’s rumoured to be (efficiency-wise) I’ll probably try to get my company to get me a Framework laptop with that and then all will be well.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure Steam Deck is having an effect here. Not only do they seem to sell well on their own but people may get ideas when they see Linux-based device running games decently…

Clever use of ‘nonsensical’ here. How refreshing.
