I hardly ever play on my mobile, the market of games I enjoy is saturated with ‘free games’ that you can buy to get rid of the ads. Which however are completely designed around the ads. ‘Watch this ad for 30 more gold’ , or shit like that. In other words completely and utterly pay to win, because instead of ads you can just pay for the gold with ingame currency that is ridiculously overpriced in relation to what the ad money would have been. And in order to compensate: more ads.

Guess what, I lost joy. We live in a capitalist hellscape. Nowhere is that more clear than in Google play store.

Swiggles , to gaming in What are your thoughts in mobile games?

They stopped being fun 10-15 years ago. Back then people started figuring out the new touch input for games which lead to many simple, but creative games.

Nowadays, it feels like there exists nothing noteworthy in this space. Most are just boring clones of clones of clones riddled with ads and other garbage. I was unable to find even one game worth installing on my phone the past few years.

I don’t know what I am looking for at this point. I love casual games and play a lot on PC or my Steam Deck and it is so much easier to find something there which isn’t just a cheap money grab.

Inventor: invents something Capitalism: rewards him

Inventor: invents something communism: *cricket noises"

UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT ,

Inventing better ways to do things isn’t rewarding?

Flumsy ,

You can also invent better ways to do things under capitalism. There is no difference in that regard

OurToothbrush , (edited )

Inventor: invents something Capitalism: rewards him

Inventor invents something: capitalism has them pay to be an inventor as they are probably a grad student and then sells the patent for a pittance to a corporation they are friendly with

Inventor invents something or fails and has to try again: communism gives them free Healthcare, education, housing and food.

gkd ,
@gkd@lemmy.ml avatar

Not to mention that they overlooked the fact that for some people - a sizable number too - the reward can be in helping others. Not everyone is a pariah looking to churn profits while pretending to care about other people’s needs.

Unfortunately the barrier to do this in capitalism is high, because like you mention, if you’re devoting your time to something that is not immediately producing profit then you may lose access to those basic needs. Companies can weather those losses, but will then want to make up the costs by - usually - using shady practices.

That’s not to say communism is the answer. But it surely isn’t capitalism as we have it today.

OurToothbrush ,

I mean to get rid of profits ya gotta get rid of the bourgeoisie, and then you’re in a classless society.

Flumsy ,

capitalism has them pay to be an inventor

I live in a capitalist country with free education. Healthcare is free if you cant afford it and is always a percentage of your income otherwise. Housing and food is also free if you cant afford it.

I have trouble seeing why capitalism is supposedly so bad

OurToothbrush ,

Social democracy isn’t sustainable though, it requires the threat of a revolution to force the capitalists into a compromise and will be rolled back when that threat passes in the name of profit.

GhotiPhin , (edited )
@GhotiPhin@kbin.social avatar

Inventors in the USSR were paid just as well, if not better than, their American counterparts. Mind you, this is not a defense of the USSR or authoritarian communism, Stalinism killed many people. However, maybe educate yourself on how these systems worked before critiquing them. A critique of communism does not negate critiques of capitalism.

Also - be careful with conflating inventors and capitalists. Inventors are often laborers who have their work profiteered by from the owning class - famously, Nikola Tesla lost control of his patent for DC motors and was left penniless as capitalists formed a new utility company.

Philo Farnsworth invented the television, as well as making significant contributions to microscopy, medical procedures and nuclear fusion. He had to fight legal battles throughout his career because of patent fuckery, and never saw the fruits of his labor. His research was constantly underfunded and he died of alcoholism in relative obscurity.

Beefytootz , to unixporn in [XFCE] I call it: "Gnome 2 at Home"

I dig it, although it’s not very reminiscent of the gnome 2 I remember. Correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t gnome 2 get forked into Mate?

MrBubbles96 OP ,

Ah, MATE. The one DE I’ve never actually tried in my Distrohopping days for whatever reason (there was nothing wrong with it or anything, i just never got around to it before falling in love with XFCE). I’ll take your word for it. Heck, maybe I’ll tweak this to resemble MATE more if it’s really “pretty much Gnome 2”

Beefytootz ,

It’s definitely a very well made desktop environment. It’s what I started with back in 06-08 when I started using Ubuntu. Ubuntu has a pretty well built mate flavor, as does Linux mint. The Ubuntu mate flavor is a great one to see what’s functionally possible with mate. There’s a bunch of preconfigured set ups matching various other operating systems and some unique configurations. On my main PC, I’m running garuda xfce, but with bspwm as the window manager. For my laptop, I’m running pretty much the same set up, but with Linux mint Debian edition in xfce/bspwm as well. Your set up is still rad though, I really dig it!

lvxferre ,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

didn’t gnome 2 get forked into Mate?

Yup. I use it. It has a few rough corners (e.g. the weather panel suddenly stopped working), but it works fairly well.

I feel like eventually it should be merged into Xfce. But that’s harder than it looks like.

MrBubbles96 OP ,

Harder, how? If ya don’t mind me asking?

lvxferre ,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

Because at the end of the day it means “hey, developers working on foo, ditch it and move to bar, then try to convince bar devs to allow you to make it more foo-like”. And that’s for two whole DEs, not just one or two applications.

For anyone unaware:

SATOR
AREPO
TENET
OPERA
ROTAS

A grammatical but boring sentence in Latin which is like eight different kinds of palindrome. It was the “cool S” of ancient Rome.

I got nerd-sniped by this a while back and tried finding any English equivalents, and long story short, there really aren’t any. It takes one palindromic word, two words which are also words when reversed, and some implications about matching letters between words. I just wrote a function that recognized when a fifteen-letter string matched the requirements (the latter ten letters being a reversal of the first ten) and trimmed down a dictionary.

The results still rely on a lot of… almost-words. Like “apart paler alala relap trapa.” Some of these are loanwords and some of these are nonsense. “Darts apart radar trapa strad” is closer. “Farad acara radar araca daraf” highlights two things: ACARA is an Australian agency, because my dictionary was a spellcheck file, and the daraf is a unit proposed by one guy who was explicitly spelling farad backwards, because us STEM types are all huge dorks.

After some editing, here’s a list of what didn’t seem like complete bullshit: Asses stime siris emits sessa. Cares amene refer enema serac. Damon animo minim omina nomad. Darts apart radar trapa strad. Dedal enema dewed amene laded. Detar enema tenet amene rated. Farad amora rotor aroma daraf. Gater amene tebet enema retag. Gnats nonet anana tenon stang. Hales amene level enema selah. Kayak amapa yaray apama kayak. Lasso amahs sagas shama ossal. Lasso artus stats sutra ossal. Laton animo tipit omina notal. Marts apart radar trapa stram. Mural ulema rever amelu larum. Namer amene mesem enema reman. Paler amene lemel enema relap. Parts apart radar trapa strap. Rater amene tenet enema retar. Redes edile divid elide seder. Sarah aroma rotor amora haras. Stats tenet anana tenet stats. Straw trapa radar apart warts. Sumac ulema mesem amelu Camus.

That makes sense. I have often wondered how much atrocity we’re willing to forgive in a fictional character if they’re charming/charismatic and if it translates at all to real life with for instance the glorification of certain serial killers.

Not saying there definitely is one. I have no idea. But I do wonder about it.
