So many people complain about epic and it’s launcher. Yeah, it’s not great but it works just fine and with all the free games you can claim, it’s just crazy not to have a account for it.

Every week 1 to 2 games to claim and in December for like 2 weeks straight you get extra games to claim.

Who cares it’s a repeat or a less good game, it’s free. Try it out and maybe you’ll find your next favorite game!

JasSmith ,

I fully agree. There was some controversy about exclusives, and I get it, but the drama was completely disproportional to the issue. It turns out that console fanboys have evolved into launcher fanboys. I'm grateful for free games and an amazing games engine.

I never said I stood by that shit, just that I stood against what the dev did. Conversely, it’ll be much harder for you to claim you’re not standing by the dev’s actions, since everything he did came directly from him.

How about the way he told people who had already paid him, who funded the development of the entire fucking game for years that he “owes them nothing,” despite the fact that he would be literally nowhere without them?

What about how he said that his own supporters and customers no longer being able to access the game that they funded and paid for is “not his problem?”

How about my favorite quote from the dev: “gamers deserve the gas chamber.”

So, good to know you support a cruel, scamming, antisemitic scumbag.🖕

Edit: The quote was fabricated, as it turns out. The rest was not.

pleasantly_moist ,

Nobody lost access to the game. They just had to click a different icon to launch it. That’s it. That was the whole “controversy”.

Calling someone a moron and Nazi for not joining a temper tantrum over something so utterly inconsequential is psychopath behavior.

Edit: To address your insane ignorance, yes, people who gave them money did fucking lose access to it. They had supporters in countries where EGS didn’t do service at the time who lost access entirely. One such user is who I saw receive the “Not our problem,” reply.

It’s a third-party launcher for Epic, GoG and Amazon. It’s way less resource heavy than GoG or Epic and better in terms of privacy.

MooseBoys , to linux in Windows 11 vs Linux supported HW

Linux has better support for the long tail of hardware. Windows has better support for bleeding-edge hardware. The main reason for this is money.

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ml avatar

Except for my AMD 1800x that was 4 years old when W11 launched and not supported.

MooseBoys ,

I hate to break it to you but 4 years old is nowhere close to “bleeding edge” when it comes to PC hardware.

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s also not obsolete.

MooseBoys ,

That’s kind of my point. Linux supports it, but Windows doesn’t anymore. Why? Money - OEMs aren’t selling them anymore, so why spend time to support new features on them? On the flip side, the heterogeneous chiplet structure of the 7950X3D was supported on Windows from day 1, while on Linux the scheduler is still unaware of the different perf characteristics to this day. Why? Same answer - money. AMD doesn’t make money selling 7950X3D on Linux, so they’re not going to spend time writing a kernel driver to optimize perf on it.

halo5 ,

the 7950X3D was supported on Windows from day 1, while on Linux the scheduler is still unaware of the different perf characteristics to this day.

That may be true, but with the ridiculous increase in performance for this CPU due to the massive amount of L3 cache (X3D), I don’t care. I just replaced a Linux compute node with an Intel Xeon Silver compute node with a custom built Linux node that features the 7950X3D, and I’m benchmarking now at over twice the speed (CFD-type work)! Not bad for a $650 consumer CPU. The difference between 128MB and 12MB of L3 cache is apparently pretty huge, from what I’m seeing. I think it’s important to note that L3 cache can be shared across CPU cores.

MooseBoys ,

The problem is that only half of the chiplets have access to the large cache. If the scheduler isn’t aware of that and a lot of data is shared across cores (as in the case for many games), you’ll miss out on most of that performance. AMD wrote a driver for Windows to help optimally schedule threads with high cache intensity to the expanded cache chiplets, but they didn’t do it for Linux. If your workload is not very chatty between cores, and threads don’t need to synchronize at 60Hz, it won’t matter as much. But for game workloads, it makes a big difference, and can actually result in worse performance than the homogenous chiplet design of the mid-tier 7800X3D if you get it wrong.

I have to admit, leaving reddit has created a sort of vacuum in my life, and I have been spending more time scrolling on facebook, news sites and other shitty services. I’m happy to finally have landed on lemmy, but it has been a bit bumpy with the instability on lemmy.world.

    I_Has_A_Hat ,

Lemmy is getting there but it’s still not a great replacement, especially when it comes to niche topics. For example, the Venture Bros movie came out recently and I wanted to discuss it with other fans, but there’s no place on lemmy for that; or if there is, I have been unable to find it. Meanwhile the Venture Bros subreddit has 3 different megathreads. I’m keeping my reddit account around for things like that until lemmy grows a bit more.

    I_Has_A_Hat ,

It is technically a movie, sure. But more accurately, it’s the conclusion to a show that’s been on the air for almost 20 years. It’s not a movie made to stand on it’s own. Posting it to a movie sub makes as much sense as posting about ancient Roman senators in a politics sub. It’s technically politics, but you’re not going to get very meaningful discussion because it’s not what people go there for. The only people who would watch this movie are fans of the show, and even if a non-fan watched it, why would I give a shit about their opinion of it? They aren’t going to get it.

Are you starting to see the issue?

Titan , to memes in Abe-sama gives advice

    Anything except bringing in immigrants

    CIWS-30 ,

That only works for 1 or 2 generations, when the immigrants' descendants find out what the pre-existing citizenry already has found out: that it's too expensive and difficult to have children, particularly when you're overworked all the time.

Plus, immigrants are usually only brought in for jobs that are shittier, harder, lower-paying, and with fewer benefits than the current population of native born citizens already have.

I'm a children of immigrants in the USA who is childless (hell, most of my cousins are too) and I live around immigrants of every nationality, and most either want to wait until 30 to have kids (and generally only like 1 kid at that) or want to have no kids.

It's like that in a lot of western nations with birthrate problems. It doesn't take long for new people to start acting like the old people if the conditions are bad enough, and they are.

    worfamerryman ,

My wife and I are just kinda sorta getting to a place where we could consider having a kid. But we are getting a little old to have a kid.

Also, a kid at this point would tank out ability to save and slow down our career progress.

So by the time people get to a financial place to have a kid, they are too old to do it. Or they have to sacrifice too much.

    Titan ,

Same. We’re just gonna adopt once things slow down a bit and we feel ready

    worfamerryman ,

My sister-in-law want her first child to be adopted and if she decides for a second one she will possibly have her own.

I think my wife and I decided to stay kid free, but we will be a big part of our niece and nephews life.

    Kaped OP ,

You’ll be old when you’re dead. Go have a kids and teach them everything you know

    worfamerryman ,

I mean like we are biologically getting too old to have kids.

    thisisnotgoingwell ,

I don’t know if this will change your mind, but I think people exaggerate how difficult it is to have a kid. It’s pretty hard for the first year, but it gets easier. I had my son when I was 19. I haven’t thought about having another until recently, my son is 9 now, so it’s been 10 years or so. It’s a pretty big sacrifice at first but it does get easier with time… Then they got school and after school activities. I spend a lot of time with my son and enjoy spending time with him, so it’s not like it’s a drain. I also managed to get a solid career without a college degree by wit and effort. People who weren’t going to accomplish anything with their lives love to blame their children for their own shortcomings. I’m not saying it wasn’t without sacrifice, but don’t listen to naysayers. A child is not the end of the world.

    Titan ,

That’s why you take a steady stream. Also, the culture changes, hopefully for the good, as immigrants bring in new perspectives

    thisisnotgoingwell ,

I don’t think that people having children in their 30s is a bad thing. In fact, there’s a lot of misconceptions about when a woman should have a child, and it’s safe to have children even into your 40s. I think young women don’t want to start birthing kids in early adulthood when there isn’t a strong family support system in their life. Also, to be honest, most people are still trying to figure out so much about who they are and what they want in their 20s, I’d rather see more people waiting to have kids than people having kids without a thought of how they’re going to provide

    NoneOfUrBusiness ,

I mean that's definitely the best move in the short term, but they still need to cultivate an environment that encourages having children.

    Titan ,

True. People have barely any time to build a family

    csolisr ,

Abe’s push for native births over integration of foreigners always struck me as deeply racist. Especially knowing the background reasons why birth rates are so low.

    Titan ,

Yeah he is right wing afterall.

What are the background reasons for low birthrate?

    csolisr ,

Low salaries and culturally long working hours, plus the cultural tradition for women to abandon their jobs to take care of their children (which they can’t afford to do in this economy, so most just postpone child rearing)
