I feel like unity is the most likely to die. Their users are way more likely to switch to an alternative than people using reddit

Unity alternatives are also way more known than reddit or twitter alternatives

Uncle_Bagel ,

Also, anyone who wanted to leave Twitter, Reddit, or TikTok likely already have

CordanWraith ,

But the alternatives aren’t as developed. Godot still isn’t great for 3D projects and Unreal is Epic and also has royalty fees like Unity tried to add.

RandomVideos ,

Unreal only has a 5% fee on games that made over 1 million USD

Unity wanted to add a 0.20 USD tax for every download after you made 200K USD 200K users(which changes depending on how many downloads your game has and which plan you are using)

Units pricing method could have been easily exploited, game developers would have to pay for people pirating their games, if a free to play game reached those requirments, it could cost them more than the game made, giveaways would cost game developers money and all unity games would have to collect data

CordanWraith ,

No, I’m well aware that Unity’s model is fucked up.

I’m just saying that I don’t consider Unreal a valid alternative, especially as it’s owned by Epic who have shown themselves to be far worse than anything Unity has done already, and there are no other 3D engines as good as Unity. I called out Unreal also just because people are saying that Unity shouldn’t charge any fees as they think fees are unfair, but then happily recommend Unreal.

Not saying necessarily to keep using it, I’m just saying it’s not as simple of a solution as just switching for a lot of devs.

BarrelAgedBoredom , (edited )

Oh boy, a whole lot. I was compiling a list, but it turns out that Spotifys shady business practices has a whole wikipedia page. Not sure if it’s included in there but Joe Rogan. Just everything about the Joe Rogan deal. As well as their ties to the military industrial complex. It’s less “what have they done?” and more “what haven’t they done?”

clark ,

What music platforms would you suggest as an alternative? Apple Music can’t be that much better, can it?

BarrelAgedBoredom ,

Tidal is pretty popular, they at least pay artists more. There’s a couple other recommendations I’ve seen floating around on lemmy but the names are escaping me atm. I don’t think there’s any services out there with clean hands tbh, but limiting the harm from your consumption is better than doing nothing about it

Your comment actually inspired me to try the free trial for Tidal and I really like it. In the future I might switch over to it from Spotify, at least they seem to pay artists better.

@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely, though to be fair I trust the anonymous random people running the thousands of fediverse instances and communities far less than a legitimate, traceable company that gets third party audited and has to, at least, follow national laws.

I don’t love Reddit’s owners obviously, but yeah. When it comes to privacy, I don’t have any misconceptions about Lemmy being private in the least. Unfortunately :-(

meco03211 ,

The difference is advertising. Lemmy has no incentive to sell you out. A company like reddit will squeeze every legal penny out of your personal info and then some more illegally if they think they can get away with it.

mishimaenjoyer ,
@mishimaenjoyer@kbin.social avatar

just wait 5 years, the fediverse will either be dead or swallowed up by meta. the only two things it has to go for it is the decentralized nature and the absence of open advertisements.

Sharkwellington ,

I’ve heard that about FOSS projects before they really blew up. Good things do happen sometimes.

So at any point a community can defederate from meta and only federate with the likeminded free communities.

That is the strength of the fediverse.

mishimaenjoyer ,
@mishimaenjoyer@kbin.social avatar

yeah, maybe, it will just keep staying under the radar and at some point someone will have to spend some cash to keep the lights on.

jaybone ,

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if fb or Reddit started their own Lemmy instances, which they would use to post ads, and have some user-transparent integration with their native platform.

But I bet a lot of instances would de-fed them like you say.

Black_Gulaman ,
@Black_Gulaman@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That is unless the instance owners enters into an advertising deal with a company.

To keep the instance “afloat”

thesmokingman ,

The US has zero privacy laws and, as far as I know, Reddit follows zero audit frameworks (eg SOC 2). Additionally, Reddit currently does not follow its legal burden under state laws.

I’m not saying your mistrust of the fediverse is wrong. I am saying your trust of corporations is completely unfounded and very naive. Trusting the US to do anything is equally naive (see Yahoo, Experian, and multiple alphabet agencies).

Why pay for that shit in the first place? Just use YouTube Revanced and install Sponsorblock while you’re at it.

Kodama OP ,

I believe one should pay for services/content to promote costumer needs, put your money where your mouth is. But people need to stop being obsessed to always see the latest and greatest movie, sports event, concert etc. The business model would fall and it would force change but that will not happen on this 3rd planet.

In this case I just wanted to remove ads the few times I opened the app without the hustle. Conviniance easily beats piracy, even quality will take a hit.

I pay for mullvad and Proton since I like the service they provide and I encourage people to do the same.

TwoCubed ,

I know what you mean, but I refuse to throw money at Alphabet, when we’re basically the tradegoods to them. They siphon and sell off all of our information. I’m not paying for that. If I like a creator, I’d rather pay for their Patreon and get some more benefits with that.

Plus, Revanced is way more convenient than the official YT app. You can customize the shit out of it.

I pay for 3 different streaming services because it’s (still) more convenient than piracy. I pay for games because Steam and GoG are super convenient and they constantly have good deals. But fuck YT.

CalcProgrammer1 ,
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

Same. I’m happy to pay for Patreons or other donation methods to creators I really like, but no way I’m giving a cent to the big tech monstrosities that have monopolized the Internet. They deserve nothing.

Never understood that attitude. As folks mention the math for most of us does not seem to include any type of voluntary retirement and when we do its going to be because we are so messed up we can't work which likely means we won't be able to game. Seriously though, even before our electronic age, there are so many worthwhile things to do outside of clocking into a job.

At risk of sounding depressing as fuck, after I lost my dad this past spring, I had the most cathartic outletting emotion to that exact sound while hiking at a wildlife reserve with my wife. There’s something insanely deep and meaningful to me in those calls, and I love to hear them every spring - even if it only lasts a month or so. I live on the other side of the continent from home, but the blackbirds and robins are still a constant that come every spring and I’m so thankful for them.

HobbitFoot ,

You’re dealing with a generation retiring where a significant minority dedicated themselves to their jobs 100% to fulfill their family duty of being a provider. So they became boring ass people chasing overtime and money to the detriment of developing themselves as people.

Once these people retire, they don’t know what to do with themselves.
