What are AT-harddisks? Google is not helpful.

muddybulldog ,

Aka PATA or IDE hard disks. Basically consumer grade kit.

The statement that the kernel would only ever handle IDE was basically a confession that this would never be a product suitable for enterprise or professional use where SCSI was the typical interface.

30p87 ,

To be fair, it’s actually not suitable for professional use. That’d be an understatement, it’s damn perfect for literally everything!

I’m not quite sure, but maybe it refers to the IBM PC AT ( model 5170) hard drive?

bonn2 , to asklemmy in How are these smartphone back covers made?

You are right that the metal backs are usually laser etched. The plastic ones on the other hand are usually injection molded then screen printed.

The injection molding is well outside what most would consider “hobby grade”, however there are many guides on how to diy screen print (though running it on curved surfaces is an extra challenge). So your best bet would probably be to buy a clone back cover with little or no writing on the back, then screen print on your own custom stuff.

iPod_girl OP , (edited )

Oh yeah, injection moulding is definitely well outside of my scope of capabilities and budget, haha. I’ll look into diy screen printing! Thanks for the help <3

iPod_girl OP ,

I found that foil transfer like stamping or printing is more likely to be the method they used. Screen print metallic ink is either too flaky or too shimmery, not reflective smooth.

Honestly it’s exhausting to the whole lemmy experience that every time something gets even slightly political, there’s an extreme communist in the comments pushing their agenda.

I can literally say “hey man they all suck yo fuck politics am I right?” And in comes a guy who tells me I’m a Republican or Democrat or fuck America, whatever. I can even agree that the news is biased in America, and I’ll still get the same response.

It makes conversations for the average consumer on the platform unproductive at best, unsettling in its worst form.

krolden OP ,

We spell it X-treme communism

bric ,

For me it’s just the fact that people have delved so deep into their echo chambers that they’ve lost all sense of what regular people think. Like I’m fine with someone being an extreme communist, they can have that opinion, but it seems like a lot of people on here talk to other extreme communists so much that they think more nuanced communists are somehow right wing. It doesn’t matter how much you try to concede to acknowledge their viewpoint, their personal Overton windows have shifted so far that they exclude everyone but people exactly like them, and it just makes conversations impossible.

jaschen , to technology in I just wanted to take a minute to appreciate interchangable batteries

The downside is the volt is not 1.5volts. Its closer to 1.2volts. This is fine if you’re using 2 batteries for things like the TV remote. But when you’re using things that require more than 4 batteries, then you might get into some weirdness. I have a remote for my DSLR that sends infrared to the softbox. Every 10 shots, it would miss the shot. It turned out to be the batteries. It needed all 6Volts vs 4.8Volts.

wim ,

These days there’s also Lithium ion AA batteries, with different voltages. You can get them downvolted to anything from 1.5 to 1.8V.

The ones over 1.5V are commonly used in applications with electronic motors, since it allows you to effectively overdrive the toy or whatever it is you’re powering.

stevedidwhat_infosec ,

Life hax right here

nikt ,

Alkaline batteries lose voltage as they drain, so 1.5V is at full charge but it drops down to about 1.2V very quickly and then stays at 1.0V - 1.2V for most of the alkaline battery’s operating life.

NiMH batteries tend to consistently stay at their nominal voltage (1.2V) through their entire charge.

So in other words, if you have devices that really expect exactly 1.5V per battery, they would only work with alkalines at the very top of their charge. Nowadays most non-garbage circuits should be designed to work just fine with anything above 1V per battery.

Fidelity9373 ,

Every battery has a voltage curve though; even alkaline batteries will drop off the 1.5v region after some time. Comparatively, ni-mh rechargeables will hold 1.2v more consistently and for longer than an alkaline, where it's voltage drops pretty quickly as the battery dies.

Nah. Those who installed adblocker did this for a reason. They’ll put up with it for maybe a week at max before they get annoyed by the full-Screen hot singles in their area in tab 69 that plays music.

Aram1s , (edited )

If around 58% is equivalent to 99.9% that is, and as long as this source is correct.

stillitcomes ,

I usually don’t give a fuck about ads, but they’ve gotten increasingly annoying lately. Used to be that the popular websites were classier and less intrusive with their ads, that’s why they were popular. Now the biggest websites (most obviously YouTube) are the ones with the craziest most intrusive ads.

PeriodicallyPedantic , to memes in Ad blockers are a must

What is with huge tech brands voluntarily self destructing, right now?

Lucidlethargy ,

My theory is that they have been “inbreeding” too much by only hiring friends and family. This creates a cesspool instead of a talent pool. Try getting into one of these companies without an in… It’s not easy.

archomrade ,

I think it’s a little more straightforward: we’re at the tail end of a tech bubble. All these companies have been riding a COVID-19 wave and are reaching the end of it. They’ve been laying off staff as well as burning their customer good-will for extra revenue.

satnififu ,

The “we’ll figure it out later” mentality that plagued the entirety of the ad-supported internet during the last two decades is finally coming to it’s natural conclusion. Some companies have decided to tackle the issue by progressively getting away from ads (See X/Twitter, YouTube Premium), others are trying to hold for dear life and doing one last, giant push to try to make it work (Google, also YouTube somewhat). The next few years will decide what the future of the web looks like

quat ,

I’ve started to reconsider how I do things online. For such a long time it’s been the norm to expect things for free (gratis), and users became the product. If the choice now is being bombarded with ads or paying for a service, I’d rather pay a reasonable price. If I want online storage to keep my files backed up and available, then a small sum is acceptable to me. The important thing is to choose providers who believe in the open spirit of the internet, using free software, respecting privacy. I’ve submitted a couple of patches to the operating system I use. Etc. I want the internet to be a cooperative, friendly place.

Spimble ,

My guess is they’re not self destructing. They’re pissing off parts of the user base to profit more from the rest of the user base. I’d guess it’s all calculated and profitable. Except whatever twitter is doing that’s just a mess

This makes me really happy to see. Desktop Linux is fucking amazing nowadays. Gnome and KDE being as excellent as they are, Flatpak massively simplifying package management for end users, and Pipewire being Pipewire have all gone a long way in making desktop Linux more easily approachable and incredibly stable. If I’m allowed to be controversial, I’d include Wayland in that list as well.
