Koffiato ,

Seriously. I just can’t escape. I think it’s nice to have people who support xism while also having people that support yism and zism, as it creates a healthy environment where we can discuss things throughly; since each member will see, recognize, and interpret what they see differently and possibly contribute more.

Vast majority of Lemmy users are in the same demographic which barely provides differing opinions so there’s basically nothing to discuss (apart from things do not sit well with said demographic).

I really do hope this platform somehow attracts users from every ideology much like Tildes.

rozlav ,

You mean the picgure is a windows ad ?

Sarcasmo220 ,

But that is sort of why it’s the first step. You were using Windows and were bothered with ads. So you may have looked into an alternative you heard about called Linux. You are new to Linux and maybe ask some questions on forums and interact with people from all over the world that are taking time out of their day to help you, which gives you a sense of community. Then you learn that Linux is licensed as Open Source Software, and that people are working together to create something for the benefit of people, not for profits. Then you start to wonder, what else in my life that bothers me is a result of profit motivation?

When trying to achieve equality, it takes far less work to drag one group down than to lift another group up to an equal level.

This is the crux of why Communism typically achieved worse outcomes than other systems.

Pointtwogo OP ,
@Pointtwogo@lemmy.ml avatar

This is a good point. I agree.

domdom ,

Yes, eliminating hyper greed will result is less hoarded wealth. So uh yeah, one guy won’t own 7 mansions.

Ilovethebomb ,

Yeah, that’s the part that hasn’t happened historically. Usually it turns into eat the middle class.

CyberEgg ,

Because with capitalism we have such a large middle class now.

sederx ,

Middle class is not a thing.

Ilovethebomb ,

Uhh, OK.

Floey ,

Communism isn’t about equality though.

And I wouldn’t say communism achieved worse outcomes. Countries adopting some form of communist ideology experienced some of the most rapid increases in industrialization, QoL, and education. They weren’t perfect, but they definitely didn’t drag everyone down to the previous minimum.

betwixthewires ,

One of the big problems with communism is that economic prosperity is framed fundamentally as a zero sum game. When that’s a foundational axiom of the system you build you wind up not building systems of growth, only of redistribution. It has rippling effects throughout the culture and the philosophy of a nation that attempts it.

Ilovethebomb ,

Most of the communist regimes people use as examples rose to power at a point in history when new technologies and industrialization were having a huge impact on the way people lived.

A mix of capitalism and socialism that made a point of educating and upskilling their population would have achieved the same goal without the brutal massacre of a chunk of their population.

Floey ,

Industrial technologies helped capitalist countries succeed just as much as communist ones but you attribute capitalist success to economics and communist success to the technology. Capitalism hardly uplifts, it sabotages the growth of previously colonized countries, extending imperial rule. Even in the countries on the benefiting side of that imperial relationship most of those benefits are going to owners and not workers. The exploited country could get most of the benefits with few of the downsides by just having an open trading relationship, but historically countries trying to achieve some level of self determination are met with a combination of military force, espionage, and embargos.

flamingo_pinyata ,

I would add the religious reverence for Marx so many Communist societies had.

Marx was excellent at analyzing the problem. But his ideas how to solve it were bad.

Most Communist countries stuck to ideological purity to an extreme and never tried different approaches.

Matombo ,

Also people who use pc as a synonyme for windows. fuck those guys and guydedts.

PS. Macs are also PCs as PC describes the hardware and the usecase unrelated to the producer and the installed os.

probably ,

Language changes over time and words don’t mean the same thing forever. The entire purpose of language is to communicate. So if you have a Mac and say you are a PC user, you are failing to use language well. Apple themselves helped facilitate that change. It can be less consistent with Linux on a PC, I agree. But language is an evolving meme (as per the original definition of meme, not the cat photos). And to not acknowledge that is like being a young earth creationist with language.

Do you also argue that anyone who is happy is part of the LGBT community?

Matombo ,

But PC has not made this transition universaly which makes it a very ambigues word. It is still used a category of electronic devices regardless auf operating system. Also if you say PC = Windows PC and MAC = MacOS PC what is the overarching Category? and ? = Linux PC?

zagaberoo ,

There’s a bit more subtlety to it than that. The PC architecture that dominates today is a direct descendant of the 1981 IBM Personal Computer, which was made to run DOS and later Wondows. The cultural association makes sense in that context.

MadBob ,

I know it’s a completely normal typo that anyone could make, but “Wondows” has just made me a laugh for a good few seconds.

A private (meaning, non-public) field like this one probably uses the multicom frequency, but yes. Self-announce on the CTAF. Irks me a bit there aren’t runway numbers.

PlantDadManGuy ,

Why do they need numbers? There’s only one runway.

name_NULL111653 ,

Gives you a rough magnetic heading so you can line up easier and keep your pattern straight. Also to tell others which way you’re going to keep from crashing head-on (a north/south strip might be 36/18, for example, so ppl know which way you’re going).

captain_aggravated ,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

A runway with two ends. And you’d probably be surprised how easy it is to choose one end when you mean another.

Also to identify it from the air as a runway. It’s paved and they painted a centerline; I would have also painted numbers and thresholds.

Probably space engineers more abuses the direct pipeline than uses it, in ways that translation layers wouldn’t be able to emulate the quirks.

True, it can’t add new ones ether because it’s a extra layer and not part of the actual game!
